1-bedroom Villas in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.

The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.

Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.

The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.

Avalon III

Avalon III

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Staying at Avalon III exceeded all my expectations.  It is a small villa but has everything two people could ask for.  The exclusivity, privacy and location of this place make it my favourite one-bedroom villa in Canggu, and I would choose it again and again over any Bali five-star hotel with a front desk and fancy spa.  I recommend this villa to anyone, especially if you love the beach.

Who would have thought you could have your own little tropical beach house with a private pool for the price of a luxury hotel room?  We appreciated having air-conditioning in every room, and with glass doors looking onto the pool deck from the living room and bedroom, it still has a tropical jungle vibe, whether you are indoors or out by the pool.  Outside, there isn’t much of a yard, but there’s a table big enough for two to dine alfresco, and a set of wicker lounge chairs by the pool for sunning in total privacy.  At night, the pool lights up and you can gaze at the stars, so very easy to turn up the romance.

You can make your own meals, order groceries or room service, or get delivery from outside.  The villa staff were flexible and responsive to our requests.  We asked for maximum privacy, so they’d wait until we left to tidy everything brilliantly, and then they were always available outside the villa when we came back in the evening if we wanted anything.

Dea Villas - Villa Radha

Dea Villas - Villa Radha

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

There have been a few changes since we stayed at Villa Radha two and a half years ago, with the addition of two new villas to the enclave, a children’s playground, a gym and a spa. Staying at Villa Radha now means you have the choice of two spas on your doorstep. We decided, however, that we preferred the bygone era ambiance of the totally private wooden spa building within Villa Radha’s magical garden. Like the villa itself, the spa is another antique building so it is more in keeping with the overall character and charm. We noticed that with a total of five villas on the estate there is a now a little bit of hustle and bustle (and dare we say modernity) outside of Radha’s garden walls, but tucked away in our own private paradise – the gardens have grown and are even more beautiful than we remembered – we were able to completely relax and enjoy the wonderful service of the staff, and the great food. If you’re into sleek contemporary design the ethnic, rustic style of Villa Radha may not to be to your taste, but it is nevertheless immaculate and very comfortable, with all the trappings of the 21st century. There is no sitting room as such, but we enjoyed relaxing on the veranda, and were also very comfortable watching TV and movies in the air conditioned bedroom. As for the garden, well this is a landscaping triumph: forget any ideas of a modern Zen-like space, this garden will bewitch you with its tropical abundance of giant taro leaves, spiky pandanus, fan, parlour and travellers palms, bird’s nest ferns, heliconia, flowering frangipani, and rare fruit trees. It will make you wonder how it can be so full (almost to the point of being overgrown) and yet so meticulously maintained. At first we thought it was a little bit expensive for a one-bedroom villa, but when you consider the uniqueness of the property, the space, the facilities, the butler service, the pool, spa and gorgeous garden, you’ll probably agree that it’s extremely good value for money.

Villa Bulan Madu

Villa Bulan Madu

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

Villa Bulan Madu is a wonderfully romantic little villa.  The setting is very pleasant and, given how open the rooms are, very private. The villa shares the same owner, staff and kitchens as its neighbour, the five-bedroomed Villa Indah Manis, so has the benefit of a large staff who discreetly disappear next door until summoned. For us, the staff could not have been more helpful and the food we had was beautifully presented.

Lakshmi Villas - Solo

Lakshmi Villas - Solo

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

On our recent return visit to Villa Solo, with another three years of villa reviewing experience under our belts, we decided we should have scored it a little bit higher, so we’ve adjusted the numbers to reflect this. The nothing-is-too-much trouble butlers here have all been trained by Magnums – one of the top butler training schools in the world – and it shows. We were really impressed! Most villas of this size in Seminyak are self catering, so a personal butler on call 24/7, plus a menu of delicious food (prepared by a chef in the main service kitchen), is a treat indeed. Nothing has changed at the villa itself, it is still very private, and it still looks new because it has been immaculately maintained, along with the plants that line its walls. Villa Solo is ideal for a single person, a couple, or even a family of three, looking for something bigger and better than a hotel room. An extra bed can be provided for a child. It is also very good value for money. Don’t expect anything grand: Villa Solo is simple, stylish, modern, practical, immaculate and private.

The Layar - Villa 2A (1BR)

The Layar - Villa 2A (1BR)

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We’d done our research and thought we had realistic notions about where we were going, but The Layar surpassed all our expectations.  The villas’ design works on so many levels: it’s intriguingly different and totally tropical, but what we hadn’t anticipated was just how ‘at home’ we would feel as soon as we crossed the stepping stones into the gorgeous garden and saw the sweep of roof, from under which the living and dining areas beckoned.

The villas are well equipped with satellite channel TVs, sound systems and a good range of kitchen utensils (in the unlikely event that you might chose to self-cater), while bedrooms and bathrooms – all of which are generously sized – are fitted with quality furnishings and adorned with interesting Indonesian art and artefacts.

And there’s plenty to keep all ages and interests entertained.  The gardens, furnished decks and pools, coupled with TV areas, lounge and dining spaces will be enough for some, but lazy days can be punctuated with in-villa spa treatments carried out by The Layar’s professional therapists and delicious barbecue dinners cooked in the gardens of your own private oasis.  When we did finally tear ourselves away from our new ‘home’ we enjoyed venturing out to explore the shops, restaurants and cafes of Seminyak, all of which were easy to reach on foot.  Cocktails on the beach at La Lucciola, followed by an excellent dinner at ‘The Junction’ made a great end to the day.

Villa Anjali Purple

Villa Anjali Purple

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Anjali Purple is a gem-like hideaway; a bit of a love nest. We loved the clean, contemporary architecture, the Indonesian textiles, ethnic art and the sense of privacy and independence. It was great to be so near the Petitenget scene with its beach and restaurants, and yet go back to somewhere peaceful and quiet. The villas are so well designed that despite their proximity, one is not aware of other guests.

Villa Anjali Purple’s open-air plan fills the living and dining space with the light and colour of the small garden. We thought this villa was the prettiest of the four in the Anjali complex. The purple colour scheme is surprisingly well-handled and gives the villa an opulent feel. The rich grey marble floors deepen the feeling of luxury.

We felt at home as soon as we’d unpacked. The bedroom is comfortably furnished; the hot water in the bathroom comes on instantly (unlike in many older properties) and there was plenty of storage in the dressing area. We applaud the sturdy timber desks that are big enough to work at, with room for a laptop and files next to the flat-screen TV, and intelligently placed electrical outlets alongside.

We enjoyed being able to stock the kitchen with our favourite provisions from the up-scale Bali Deli supermarket (about 6km) and slipping over to the madly wonderful Potato Head Beach Club (2km) for lunch, a swim in the pool, and a long walk along the beach. In the evening it was easy to order a taxi and fully indulge in Seminyak’s nightlife.

A swim in the villa’s pool was fresh in the morning, a perfect way to un-wind after shopping, and deliciously private at night. There was only one sun lounger, but we just spread a beach towel on the lawn.

The housekeeping staff were friendly and courteous, with big Balinese smiles. We also felt well-looked after by the gracious and competent villa manager. But guests are mainly left to their own devices.

Rumah Campur

Rumah Campur

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Much of Bali's appeal comes from the simple way of life and Rumah Campur allows you to fully appreciate this without sacrificing too many comforts. We quickly slipped into a relaxed routine, dividing time between the pool and a good book, bathing in sunshine and birdsong and savouring the cook's tasty local dishes. The villa is as much a romantic retreat as it is a family one: strolling down to the beach to watch sunset, then returning for a quiet dinner under the stars would certainly set the scene perfectly for any marriage proposal. Mornings are ushered in with dove calls and if you can drag yourself from slumber at sunrise and open the blinds, the backdrop of dappled green will wake even the most jaded soul with a smile. Children have plenty to keep them occupied between the pool, garden and watching DVDs in the den. The owners actually lived in the house for a year with their kids and made modifications to suit - like the mezzanine sleeping deck in the main bedroom. If younger guests do get restless, you can always nip to the site office, which is open all day and manned by friendly, helpful staff, and ask them to book you for a horse ride at the nearby stables, call a taxi to take you to the beach at Canggu (8km), or even to go shopping in Seminyak (15km). Staying in a village brings you into close contact with Bali's rich, local culture: there are ceremonies and offerings at the nearby temples almost daily. We were there during Nyepi, the Balinese New Year festival, and ideally placed to witness the famous, hand crafted Ogoh-Ogoh demons being paraded through the country lanes. On the day following the parades, no-one is allowed to venture out of their homes and only candles can be burned for light at night. At Rumah Campur, rather than being a drag, this only added to what was already a supremely peaceful and authentic Balinese experience.
