3-bedroom Villas in Seminyak, Bali, Indonesia

A few kilometres north west of Kuta, Seminyak is a hip and happening district which has long been the lure of bohemians and jetsetters. This is Bali's late-night party land, laying claim to the highest concentration of independent fine-dining restaurants and beach clubs on the island, including Ku Dé Ta, Potato Head, Mozaic, Cocoon, La Lucciola, Sarong, Métis and Sardine. Seminyak also boasts a plethora of chic cocktail bars, sumptuous spas and fashionable boutiques.

Seminyak Beach is the place where the local and expat communities gather every evening at sunset. A playground of the rich, the famous and the bon vivants, the vibrant nightlife and luxurious accommodation of Seminyak draws a sophisticated crowd of ‘beautiful people', especially Europeans.

Nearby sporting facilities include the Canggu Club (of which many holiday villas in the area include guest membership), offering social and leisure amenities, including a state-of-the art gym, a 25m swimming pool and a tennis and squash centre. For horse lovers, three riding stables are located at nearby Canggu – Kuda P, Tarukan, and Bali Equestrian Centre. Nirwana Golf Course – designed by Greg Norman and renowned as one of the best golf courses in Asia – lies about 20km up the coast beside the dramatic, waved-lashed sea temple of Tanah Lot. Seminyak is also convenient for all of Bali's main shops, shopping malls, Waterbom Park, and many tourist attractions.

Adelle Villa Two

Adelle Villa Two

Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak

As soon as we walked through the doors of Adelle Villa Two we thought ‘this is cute’ and for the location ‘surprisingly spacious’. It’s a dark wooden building so the effect is cosy, comfy and homely rather than light, bright and breezy. The rooms and living areas are basic and rustic with dated appliances (don’t expect a Bose sound system and plasma screens) but they do the job in a simple and relaxed way. And the generous garden and pool make it a great place for kids to let loose and for all to enjoy the sunshine. Due to its central location you can hear the faint sound of traffic in the distance and ambient sounds from the neighbouring villas but overall it is a quiet and peaceful place to unwind.

The staff spoke very limited English but the friendly villa manager, who is only a phone call away, can answer any questions you may have.

Unfortunately there was a local power failure just after our arrival, so we were literally left in the dark and without a back-up generator. But instead of searching for candles and fending for ourselves we decided to check out the nearby restaurant scene where we were simply spoilt for choice.

If you are looking for modern high-end luxury then Villa Beatrice isn’t for you, but if you want great value for money, easy and comfortable living in a central location, then it ticks all the boxes.

Angel's Villa

Angel's Villa

Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak

Angel’s Villa is compact both in its location and the villa itself – that said, it is bigger than most villas of this type and price range. The outside space is dominated by the pool which is lovely and refreshing – perfect to slide into from the pool-side lounge area – but there’s not much space for kids to run around. Overhead fans provide a good breeze to the open lounge and dining area which is not air-conditioned but is cool and shady. The dining area is a great setting to enjoy meals but do not try to move the table – quite frankly its one of the largest pieces of wood we have laid eyes on – and the quirky holes in the table top will no doubt capture the odd casualty.

All three bedrooms are spacious and have excellent bathrooms – clean, modern and very functional, if a little minimalist. The staff were attentive, although a little timid and their English wasn’t always great, but their desire to please is without compare. As the villa is managed independently, rather than through a specialist management company, the training levels were perhaps not quite up to the usual professional standard. The more senior staff, including the villa manager, were much better but they also work at the owner’s other villa so are not always around. That said, they were easily tracked down when needed.

All in all we liked the villa for what it was and would recommend it for a small group or family, but maybe not for very young children as the pool would be a constant concern.

Eshara I

Eshara I

Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak

Eshara works as well as an eight (or five) bedroom residence as it does as three smaller individual villas.  With all the connecting walls hidden away it certainly feels open and spacious.  The pools do dominate the gardens, leaving relatively small patches of open lawn, however there is plenty of deck space with loungers and outdoor seating.  We would certainly recommend the combined villas for a group of up to 16 who want to be centrally located.  You do not get more ‘in town' than this.

All the bedrooms are well designed with modern ensuite bathrooms and plenty of storage, and most open out onto the pleasant gardens. Blackout curtains and TVs are nice touches.

During our visit, the staff looked after us really well with smiling service and a willingness to please that made us feel very comfortable.

Kalimaya IV

Kalimaya IV

Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak

When we first opened the gilded Balinese doors into Villa Kalimaya IV, we were immediately taken with the large pool that runs the length of the garden, with its huge jacuzzi, infra-red sauna, sunbathing deck and imposing raised balé. The element of surprise was maintained throughout our visit, as we discovered not one but two living rooms as well as a second dining area on the upstairs terrace – an extraordinary amount of space, especially in such a hip Seminyak hotspot.

This is a really well-designed, well-furnished villa with a lot of extra details to ensure a comfortable, cossetted stay. With the pool area to frolic in (plus four TVs and DVD players), there was plenty to keep us occupied without making use of the complimentary Canggu Club membership. And when we did step beyond the villa walls, we were on the beach or in Seminyak’s best restaurants and boutiques within minutes.

This is the perfect place for a family or group of friends who want to be sociable and yet still be able to get away from each other. The room configuration is good for families as one of the two upstairs bedrooms has twin beds – perfect for the kids – while the downstairs bedroom will suit the grandparents (or older kids returning from a night on the town).

The cook, butlers and housekeepers – all charming and helpful – divide their time between this and the other three Kalimaya villas along the same quiet lane. We considered this a bonus as it means guests benefit from a professional team, but privacy is not compromised by their continued presence – and it means that self-catering is a personal choice, not a prerequisite.

Laksmana Estate - Villa Des Indes I

Laksmana Estate - Villa Des Indes I

Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak

Our inspection of Villa Des Indes I revealed an immaculate, eclectic home that has been lovingly furnished by its owners. The interiors reflect the owners’ travels and passions, as they invite guests to share and celebrate the rich heritage of Indonesia through a museum-quality collection of antiques, artefacts, curios, local artwork, colonial prints and classic sculptures. The villa is a true delight enhanced by its central location but very quiet and private feel. Once inside you are truly in your own world and, given the very gracious staff, a wonderfully enjoyable one at that. The simple food we had during our visit was excellent and beautifully served so we could imagine a full-blown dinner party being delightful, especially given the setting. With all the valuable antiques on display, the villa is less suitable for families with small or energetic children, but will delight families and groups who appreciate being surrounded by such treasures.

Three years on from our first visit, Villa Des Indes I continues to delight and has been meticulously maintained. We were impressed to note the addition of a small gym, shared with the newly added neighbouring Villa Des Indes II.

Rumi Villas - Villa Jepun (3BR)

Rumi Villas - Villa Jepun (3BR)

Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak

A lot of care has gone into creating in Villa Jepun (and its sisters in Rumi Villas) a well-designed, value-for-money family retreat. Although the garden is small, we were happy to have a (surprisingly) large pool in place of lawn and, with the quick-dry Sunbrella-covered cushions on the sofa, we didn’t have to worry about wet swimsuits in the living area when stirring from the pool loungers to get out of the sun. The dining area did get hot during the day, but the discomfort was nothing a floor-standing fan wouldn’t remedy. We loved the air-conditioned master bedroom. The bed was extremely comfortable, the bed-linen luxurious and the pillows heavenly (normally this reviewer’s first complaint!). The multi-tasking housekeeper Dewi was a delight (it was a treat witnessing her doing the daily offerings), and the villa manager Nyoman was charming and efficient. The owner, who likens his team to a family, makes a point of meeting his guests when he’s in Bali, and his ebullience helps explain the glowing testimonials and high number of families who choose to return. Villa Jepun may not suit those looking for a swanky Seminyak pad and the level of pandering only a phalanx of full-time staff can provide, but it is perfect for parents who want their kids to be safe and cared for without running themselves ragged, and who want their own retreat while being only steps away from shops and restaurants – and all this for less than the price of a modestly-starred hotel. Holiday budgets go further too when the first 19-litre water bottle and all personal laundry is free. And, unusually, there’s no mark-up on the grocery shopping the housekeeper is happy to do for guests.

Sahana Villa I

Sahana Villa I

Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak

Sahana Villa I is great choice for families and friends wanting a taste of luxury without breaking the bank.

We loved the fact that there was so much going on within walking distance of our own private retreat: I mean, who wouldn’t appreciate a Champagne and oyster bar just metres from their front door?

We were impressed when the owners greeted us on arrival to let us know they were on hand should we need them; it showed they genuinely cared that we had an enjoyable and memorable stay.

Facing west, the villa receives plenty of afternoon sun and can get quite warm, especially in the open living and dining areas, but the air-conditioned bedrooms provided adequate respite.

We liked the fact that the pleasant housekeeping staff were able to prepare meals when we were too tired to go out, giving us more time to kick back and relax. And the complimentary continental breakfast each morning was a nice inclusion.

Umah Maya

Umah Maya

Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak

What a great find Villa Umah Maya was, quiet and romantic, yet right in the middle of buzzy Seminyak, Bali’s chicest ‘hood, with the shops, restaurants and beach all within either walking distance or a short taxi ride. So, you girls in the party can send your boys off surfing while you get busy flexing their wallets.

Fenny, the manager/housekeeper, certainly knows her way around a kitchen and has recently been swotting up on Greek cuisine so make sure you have at least a couple of lunches at home by the pool and prepare to be amazed. And if you need anything else, Fenny is more than happy to jump on her bike and find it for you.

Definitely try out the hammocks as you laze the day away in the pool. Half in the water, half out of the water, these are fun, fun, fun.
