3-bedroom Villas in Koh Samui, Thailand

The third largest island in Thailand, Koh Samui is just 21km at its widest point and 25km at its longest. The hinterland consists of forested limestone hills and the shoreline is made up of countless coconut palm-fringed beaches and bays.

Traditionally a coconut plantation and fisherman's haven, in the last few years the island has grown into a major holiday destination with regular connections to Bangkok and direct flights from Hong Kong and Singapore. Despite rapid development, Samui is small enough to retain its charm and its modest size also makes it a convenient, laid back location even during busy seasons.

As well as fine beaches, Samui is known for recreation, relaxation and fine food. The blue waters of the Thai Gulf provide a wealth of possibility for water sports, while on land the island is well known for its professional and indulgent spas and health retreats. Fresh seafood is a specialty at most of Samui's restaurants, but you can also enjoy food from almost every corner of the globe thanks to the island's strong international influences.

Each beach on Samui has its own particular character and ambience. The east coast beaches of Chaweng and Lamai are busy, commercial areas with everything from beach vendors to fast food chains, while to the north, Bang Rak and Bo Phut have a more relaxed local village atmosphere. Beaches like Lipa Noi and Laem Set on the western and southern shores feel much more remote and untouched.

Koh Samui combines comfort and convenience with a sense of real escape and this has made it a popular choice for residential as well as tourist development. The island is an eclectic blend of nature and sophistication, one that draws repeat visitors every year to indulge in its tropical delights.

Akuvara

Akuvara

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Akuvara's contemporary design may not be to everyone's taste, but once you settle into the tropical lifestyle on offer you soon appreciate the beauty of keeping things simple.  The clean open spaces suit the environment and technological enhancements like the music and movie hard drive in the living rooms give the villa a distinctive, modern feel.

Initially, we felt the three lounge areas to be excessive, but with kids in tow the option of a separate entertainment room in the evenings definitely appeals, and the upper floor lounge adds a new dimension to sunset cocktails.

The staff are courteous and try hard to meet every request.  Despite the occasional language barrier they manage to run everything smoothly while remaining unobtrusive and the English-speaking manager ensures the villa runs smoothly and deals with things like tour bookings and restaurant recommendations.

This part of Lipa Noi offers a nice balance between seclusion and diversion.  You can happily spend days doing very little, but a short drive to the other side of the peninsular brings you to some decent resort restaurants, as well as the Nikki Beach Club, which is far more sophisticated a venue than you'd expect to find in such a secluded location.

In some ways Akuvara felt like two villas in one.  The studio at the rear of the property feels like an independent unit, but would certainly be a useful addition for a full family gathering.  The option to rent the villa without this fourth bedroom, however, makes Akuvara a great choice as a functional but comfortable family getaway.

If there is such a thing as villa envy then staying at Akuvara may inspire it as the villas close-by are significantly larger and more opulent than this one - but come with a much higher price tag.  Yet despite its compact design, Akuvara still boasts the full range of amenities required to provide a pleasant beachside escape.  Between the pool and the beach you never want for daytime pleasures and lazing in the ocean-front sala with a cool drink and a book must surely rate as one of life's finer moments.

Ban Haad Sai

Ban Haad Sai

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bang Rak-Big Buddha

It's not difficult to settle into 'the House on the Beach'. As soon as the sliding gate shuts out the roadside bustle, a relaxed atmosphere takes hold, coaxing you to kick off your shoes and switch into holiday mode.

The villa was originally designed as two separate residences and although this creates a few anomalies (such as two lounges, which seems a little excessive), we felt the symmetry between the left- and right-hand accommodation would allow families or friends the choice to spend time with or without each other when sharing the villa.

The more significant division perhaps, is between the front and rear. Staying in one of the front-facing master suites is a real treat as you enjoy constant sea views, instant pool access and special additions like sunken outdoor bath tubs but, depending on the group dynamic, this may cause a little bedroom envy with those occupying the rear guest rooms. Having said that, everyone benefits from abundant communal comforts and homely touches (including a good selection of books and DVDs) which, combined with the great sound system and the huge flat-screen TV in the AV room, add to the general sense of privilege.

Days slip by gently at the poolside, with the wide, comfy hammock providing the ultimate excuse to do nothing but read, swim and snooze. To really appreciate the villa's idyllic location and make the most of the relaxed atmosphere that pervades, ask the helpful staff to set a table on the deck or lawn in the early evening, then drift from sundowners into dinner before turning up the music for a pool party.

Lime Samui - Villa Splash

Lime Samui - Villa Splash

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bang Por-Nathon » Nathon

We defy anyone not to be ‘Wowed’ by Lime Samui.  The villa and the views are sensational and instantly create just the right holiday mood.  While we normally tend towards more traditional tropical villa design, we felt that this multi-level, super-modern villa fits its environment perfectly. The fresh, vibrant and uncluttered interiors are exciting and liberating, enhanced by a dramatic sense of space, light and height, courtesy of the villa’s hilltop location.

The living and dining spaces open completely to the wide pool and deck areas making it effortless to drift indoors and out as the mood dictates without ever having to tear yourself away from that view. Bedrooms are all very privately situated, comfortable and spacious, and while each of the bright ensuite bathrooms offer a similar range of fixtures, individual colours and choice of materials make them all delightfully different.  We were sorry not to be able to try out the sumptuous home cinema during our brief stay (there was major power failure on the island), but have vowed to return, as this was a villa luxury not to be missed.  Not sure what our excuse was for not trying the gym – it was certainly well-equipped and even this room doesn’t compromise on the view – but somehow the massage beds won out over the stairmaster!

Lime Samui’s staff team impressed us in all the right ways.  When we had questions they had the answers; when we wanted privacy they disappeared; when we were hungry they presented us with deliciously fresh and tasty meals. There is nowhere you can easily get to from Lime Samui without transport (unless you’re into mountaineering!) but a driver and car is provided and, as far as we were concerned, we had everything that we needed right there and no inclination to leave.

We defy anyone not to be ‘Wowed’ by Lime Samui.  The villa and the views are sensational and instantly create just the right holiday mood.  While we normally tend towards more traditional tropical villa design, we felt that this multi-level, super-modern villa fits its environment perfectly. The bright, open-fronted interiors create a pleasing borderless freedom, enhanced by a dramatic sense of space, light and height, courtesy of the villa’s lofty hillside location. It’s easy to drift between the pool deck and the living and dining spaces as the mood dictates without ever having to tear yourself away from those views.

The four king-bedded rooms are all very privately situated, comfortable and spacious, while the kids room, with its wide terrace just above the pool, is near enough to the villa’s main living areas to keep an eye on the little ones while still letting them enjoy their own space and the great facilities that go with it.

Lime Samui’s staff team impressed us in all the right ways.  When we had questions they had the answers; when we wanted privacy they disappeared; when we were hungry they presented us with deliciously fresh and tasty meals (do try the refreshing home-made iced pandan tea!). Panorama Summit

Panorama Summit

Thailand » Koh Samui » Choeng Mon

A line from The Carpenters’ song: “I’m on the top of the world, looking down on creation” pops into my mind as I lie on a sun lounger by the pool at Panorama Summit. Yet although we’re almost in the clouds, it’s only a short (but admittedly steep) drive to the village and pristine beach below. Nothing obscures the view here – even the hedges of white bougainvillea are perfectly trimmed to knee-height so you look over the pretty blossoms, past the coconut plantations, to the glistening temples and beyond to the sailboats in the bay.

And the view doesn’t fade with the sunset. At night you can see the village lights, a green glow from the squid fishing boats, fireworks from the beach resorts and, if you’re as lucky as we were, spectacular flashes of ‘dry lightning’. One of our favourite places to enjoy the view was from the front edge of the infinity pool, perhaps not ideal for those who suffer from vertigo though.

When we felt the need to pay for our over-indulgence at one of the many excellent local seafood restaurants, a friendly game of tennis (racket and ball hire available at the office) at the estate’s shared court, or a walk down to the beach – and back – did the trick.

We enjoyed delicious continental breakfasts prepared by the resident housekeeper, but if you want a cooked breakfast (or a private chef to prepare any other meal), this can easily be arranged for a reasonable fee plus provisions charged at cost plus 15%. Khun Pee, the villa manager, will gladly help you arrange a chef and can take care of many other concierge services too, be it an in-house massage or a boat trip to one of Samui’s outlying islands.

Samui Summit Estate - Alpha Villa

Samui Summit Estate - Alpha Villa

Thailand » Koh Samui » Choeng Mon

It's not often you get to sit with an iced drink in the sunshine and look out on 180 degrees of tropical splendour with twinkling bays left and right and palm-coated hills rising from the valley below.  At Alpha Villa you can't avoid it and the upper floor lounge and pool terrace alone is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing few days.

If you sleep in the comfortable master bedroom next to the pool, you may never bother venturing into the villa’s rather cavernous lower levels.  That's not to say guest bedrooms downstairs are disappointing - all four are quiet, private and slide open onto beautifully landscaped gardens.

Families or groups of friends will enjoy this villa because it offers plenty of options to combine shared time with more private moments.  Gathering in the TV room on the middle floor is like a trip to a laid-back cinema and it's easy to lose track of time in there, day or night, as you recline on the comfy cushions in air conditioned bliss, catching up on your movie back log.  But up on the pool deck is still the best way to lose a day; floating in the pool or gazing at the view.

Although there are a lot of steps to negotiate between floors (not ideal for seniors), the kids have plenty of space to explore and play safely (as long as you keep an eye on them around the pool area, which drops off sharply).  Alpha Villa is also one of the few hillside properties on Samui that's genuinely convenient for trips to the main beaches and tourist attractions (although a car will be necessary).

Efficient but unobtrusive staff and a wide range of optional services give you the freedom to be totally independent but also to spoil yourself with in-house indulgences like a private chef or daily massage if you so choose.  This is a great location, with versatile facilities and breathtaking views, as long as you don't mind a steep drive.

Baan Fan Noi

Baan Fan Noi

Thailand » Koh Samui » Chaweng

From the moment we set our bags down at Baan Fan Noi, we felt relaxed and ready to go with the flow – almost letting the villa’s convivial layout dictate what we should do next. From enjoying a swim in the16m pool to feeling tension lift in the jacuzzi and then falling asleep over a book on the comfy daybeds in the courtyard between the kitchen and living room, we were able to completely switch off. Nothing is too much trouble for the villa manager, Khun Muan, who quickly popped into town on his scooter when we needed something, even before we could ask the favour.

The villa’s elevated position meant we enjoyed views of not only the bay between Chaweng and Choeng Mon, but also the tiny island of Koh Matlang in the distance and the airport to the other side. Rather than being a disturbance, we found it fascinating watching the airplanes taking off and landing, with only minor noise disturbance as the villa is well to the side of the flight path.
The bedrooms are exceptionally comfortable, with down bedding, silent air-conditioning and subdued lighting. Leaving the blinds open at night meant we could see the lights twinkling along the coast below and could even enjoy a firework show being staged at Chaweng Beach. It also meant waking early to a beautiful sunrise. If you’d prefer to sleep in, you can of course draw the blinds – the aroma of coffee brewing will wake you up in time for breakfast, so no need to set your alarm. The fresh air made us hungry, so we enjoyed our continental breakfast, including a platter of tropical fruit, as a perfect way to start the day. From the breakfast table, we watched yachts and fishing boats coming and going and the island starting its day, knowing we had nothing much planned, other than another relaxing day at the elegant Baan Fan Noi.

Baan Ora Chon

Baan Ora Chon

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Ora Chorn is huge with a very dignified refined feel. It is in a wonderful setting – one of the very best in Koh Samui, if not Asia. We loved the open airy feel with so much space (there is room for another two or three bedrooms). The villa has a tranquil but serious vibe which, if we were really picky, would benefit from some warm touches to make it more homely. Don’t get us wrong, it is still eminently comfortable with huge bedrooms, great bathrooms, fabulous views and an extremely private and peaceful setting. We particularly liked the poolside sala for dinner: great views and a lovely evening temperature (beware of the slippy floor though). The staff were lovely; the villa manageress in particular, who, once relaxed, proved to be a real character – confident, efficient, friendly and full of useful information. Her English is excellent (the other staff were average) and she was very determined to make our stay enjoyable – which she easily succeeded in doing.

Baan Sairee

Baan Sairee

Thailand » Koh Samui » Laem Sor

It's wasn't until we drove from the airport and saw how developed Samui is becoming that we realised just how special Baan Sairee is both in terms of its design and the secluded location. Authentic wooden buildings and unspoilt surroundings make the villa feel very established – something built by a trader perhaps, or a member of the Thai aristocracy – and more akin to the traditional accommodation available in the north of Thailand, but with added bonus of a beach and superb facilities for the kids.

For families there is more than enough space and although the villa is a fair distance from the main tourist centres, there’s plenty to keep you occupied onsite. A combination of swimming, volleyball, badminton, tennis, a trampoline with safety net and frisbee sessions on the lawn, plus the added treat of kayaking (there are two provided with the villa) when the tide comes up, will keep the kids smiling all day and sleeping well at night. Unless you feel the urge to venture out often, perhaps to visit a waterfall or ride on an elephant, it’s hardly worth hiring a rental car (and the staff can organise transport if needed).

The villa manageress couldn't do enough for us and the chef carefully caters for all tastes. The staff are also used to coping with kids’ food requests (although the manageress told us she often manages to get them to try new things – apparently chicken satay is now on quite a few ex-guest's weekly menu). For special occasions such as birthday parties the staff will set the table on the lawn and organise fireworks on the beach.

Baan Sairee offers the chance to experience an authentic but luxurious Thai home and enjoy it as your own. It's not a place for those looking to dine out and party all night. That would be a waste of the villa's special charm.

Baan Tawan Chai

Baan Tawan Chai

Thailand » Koh Samui » Laem Set

We particularly enjoyed the natural surroundings of Baan Tawan Chai; its well-maintained garden, beach in front and coconut groves to the sides. Watching sea birds explore the shore at low tide, and the myna birds taking a bath in the pool was entertainment in itself, as was watching the resident dog, Tawan, take his regular walks down to the beach. This elderly dog belongs to the staff and lazes in their quarters throughout the day, only heading to the beach for a dip in the sea or to half-heartedly chase a crab every now and then.

This part of Koh Samui’s coast enjoys a regular breeze off the sea, so is a little cooler than other beaches on the island. It’s this breeze that has drawn one of the kite-surfing schools to Laem Set. The beach, although not the most pristine, is good for beachcombing, and exploring with the kayak shows a different perspective of this coast.

Khun Sompit, the bubbly villa manageress, is very knowledgeable about the surrounding area and offers good advice on where to go and what to do. We spent nearly all our time outside, moving between the shady sala and the poolside loungers, taking cooling dips, relaxing over a drink and enjoying the birdlife while doing very little.

It was lovely to wake up to views of the ocean from the comfortable bed in the master suite, and have tea set out and waiting to enjoy in the sala while deciding what to do – or not to do – for the day. Our inclusive continental breakfast was well presented, with a good selection of fruit, cereal, toast and muffins as well as juices and tea or coffee.
