4-bedroom Villas in Cape Yamu, Phuket, Thailand

Cape Yamu on Phuket’s east coast just north of Phuket Town was once an undiscovered area known only to the locals who fished or worked in the plantations. This all changed in the early 2000s when some international high-fliers, including renowned designer Philippe Starck and architect Jean-Michel Gathy of Aman resorts fame, discovered its pristine beauty and set about to transform it into a luxury enclave. Now, amidst the greenery and the groves, sit some of Phuket’s most prestigious villa and condominium estates. The Cape, The Bay, Baan Yamu Residences and Grove Gardens projects have since opened up along the fringes of this boot-shaped cape that resembles a tiny Italy. Cape Yamu enjoys close access to the yacht cruising and island-hopping wonders of Phang Nga Bay with three marinas and two piers within a 20-minute drive from the villa. Some islands off the east coast, including Koh Naka Yai and Rang Yai, both with beautiful sandy beaches, can be reached within a 15-minute boat trip. Mission Hills golf club is just 15 kilometres away. The serene Bang Pae waterfall and the Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre within the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park nearby offer an inland attraction for families seeking an alternative to beach excursions, while Thalang Museum (8km) gives a modest yet insightful look into Phuket’s culture and past.

Staying at Villa Naam Sawan is a dream come true, and we were entranced by the spectacular views over Phang Nga Bay. Indoor spaces exude comfort beyond belief: especially attractive are the unique décor and furnishings, each with stories of their own.  The ensuite bedrooms are luxurious and spacious, and very well situated for easy access to the pool deck – where we spent many happy hours lounging on daybeds between refreshing dips in the pool, swim-up cocktails and games of billiards.  Sundowners sipped in the alfresco dining pavilion were nearly as magnificent as sunrises over the dramatic limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay.  The warm-hearted team of staff was courteous, pleasant and kind, and prepared impressive meals worthy of top-class restaurants.  Villa Naam Sawan offered everything we were hoping for and more, and all within easy reach of many of Phuket’s best sites and attractions.

Villa Sapna

Villa Sapna

Villa Sapna really bowled us over with its amazing east-coast setting and sublime design.  Every sense-pleasing thing we could dream of in a tropical holiday villa was to be found here: sunrise views, sunset views, sea views … yes!  Add to that captivating paintings by celebrated Asian artists, modern architecture with a touch of Thai elegance, vibrant living areas that fully open to lush gardens, a 20-metre swimming pool, and attentive staff.  And a gym.  And a private chef who creates heavenly Thai tastes.  And for ease of access, a lift.  It’s hard to describe how uplifting it feels to be here, the quality of the tropical light and the vivid skies and the total serenity – just book it and see for yourself!

We also thought that, with its balance of bedrooms and living rooms arranged across two separate pavilions, the villa’s layout was ideal for extended families or two families seeking added privacy.  We’re also partial to the Cape Yamu area of Phuket as we prefer to avoid the tourist crowds.  Though it’s becoming something of an enclave for ultra-luxury villas and resorts, much of the area is still swathed in native jungle and plantations, with fishing and farming the main activities of the local people.
