4-bedroom Villas in Tabanan, Bali, Indonesia

Tabanan has a 30-kilometre-long coastline, which presents isolated coves and rocky outcrops and is famous for its surf beaches, including Medewi and Balian, offering the longest point breaks in Bali. (The drawbacks if you’re not a surfer are the sometimes-three-metre-high waves and the undertows). The beaches are sloping and lovely to walk along; covered with black sand which is regarded for its curative, therapeutic properties and especially helpful for arthritis.

The Regency is known as Bali’s ‘rice bowl’ – the most agriculturally productive region on the island, with rice fields stretching from the coast to as high as 700 metres above sea level, where the terraces are reminiscent of amphitheatres. Besides rice, there are crops of coconuts, coffee, cacao, spices and tropical fruits. This area is also home to Mount Batukau (2276m), the higher slopes of which are alpine, with mountain streams, ferns, wildflowers, creepers and orchids, as well as the rare, black, leaf-eating monkey, the kijang (small forest deer), large butterflies and moths, flying lizards, the landak (porcupine) and the lubak (mongoose). It is also a bird watchers’ paradise, habitat of the Bali black eagle.

There are no western-style shops or bars in this area, and restaurants serving international cuisine are few and far between, mainly adjoined to the region’s limited number of small and remote hotels.

The Arsana Estate

The Arsana Estate

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

It is difficult to pinpoint what’s best about The Arsana Estate. During our stay the chef cooked an exquisite dinner which was served fabulously by the staff. With the windows open, the sound of the waterfall and distant wildlife and a gentle breeze drifting in it was a delight. The so-cool pool leads off into the jungle, and with the Boss sound system cranked up, a G&T in hand and a masseuse on call, what more could one ask?

The staff were a pleasure – especially the villa manager – always attentive and smiling but nicely discreet. We could hardly believe it when the manager chased us on his motorbike for seven kilometres to return our laptop cable after we checked out. Such care! The bedrooms have superb views, ‘top’ bathrooms and ever-so-comfortable beds: closing the blackout curtains led to a deeply enjoyable but totally unplanned lie in!

Game of billards? DVD on the big screen? Walk in the village? There’s so much to do and yet it’s so easy to chill. To be honest there was no one thing that makes this villa shine, it all works really well and we could not recommend it enough.

Villa Maya Retreat

Villa Maya Retreat

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Villa Maya has a relaxed vibe with its magical jungle setting and soothing river ambiance. Although our first impression was that, because of its location, it would be hot, humid and full of mosquitoes, we were pleasantly surprised: yes, being down in the gorge means less breeze, but with the lazy river below, the sounds of running water, copious shade and the lovely colours and smells of the gardens it was all very pleasant and comfortable and exuded a lovely energy. And we hardly saw a mosquito (staff are vigilant about lighting coils in the evening). The bedrooms are all huge, maybe a little dark but great rooms and with very natural bathrooms. Two new bedroom suites (each with a private plunge pool) have been added since our first visit, making this an even more attractive proposition for a big group or family get away. The pool is a delight whilst the communal areas work really well with loads of corners to chill out and relax. Children and rivers is often not a good mix but Villa Maya is well shielded from the water by walkways and vegetation, still some care is needed. Food is selected with the chef from a suggestions menu - we found all the staff extremely willing, with a few speaking good English.

Kembang Desa Villas - Villa Ocean (4BR)

Kembang Desa Villas - Villa Ocean (4BR)

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

If you’re into nightlife, shopping and eating out in fancy restaurants, then Villa Ocean at Kembang Desa is not the villa for you, but if you love the great outdoors, the sight and sound of the ocean, the mountains and rural local life, you will love this place… we certainly do. Kembang Desa Villas are among our absolute favourite villas in Bali.

Returning to the villa after a long walk along the beach one evening, a delicious meal awaited us – nothing gourmet, just honest, well-prepared food. The cook produces meals from a tasty repertoire of Balinese / Indonesian / International dishes that hit the spot. We were also delighted by the villa’s collection of hundreds of digital movies – all without the evil scratch demon that can ruin the last five minutes of the most-engrossing films!

Make sure you wake up early in the morning when the air and sky are at their most calm and be rewarded with a mountain vista that will leave you speechless. We felt so privileged to stay in this magnificent location, not many visitors get to venture this far, so it really is a rare pleasure and an experience that will stay with us forever.

Villa Tao

Villa Tao

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

After the long and busy drive from Seminyak we were super-excited to arrive at Villa Tao. As we sipped our welcome drinks and gazed out at the ocean, the glistening black-sand beach and the waves of Balian surf break just a short stroll down the grassy hill, we felt we had landed in paradise. And we loved the rooftop garden with its 360-degree views of the mountains and the beach. Looking down on the cows roaming the pastures, fisherman catching their dinner and the waves rolling in, we got a very real sense of the simple lifestyle that has attracted so many visitors to Bali’s shores.

At sunset we went to check out some of the local bars and eateries at Balian beach on the other side of the river. A very laidback surfer/backpacker crowd was hanging out in the beachside bungalows. It was obvious that the word was out that this was the place to be if you want to escape the hectic Kuta scene.

The staff were pleasant, and Komang the chef is on hand to cook up a wide variety of home-style meals according to a priced a la carte menu.Just be sure to give the villa a heads-up for any special dietary requirements as there are no western style supermarkets close by.

The villa itself had heaps of space and the gladak houses were definite standout features, but we felt the downstairs concrete bedrooms lacked a bit of soul. The villa is quite new (we visited in November 2011) and there were a few things missing – mosquito nets and blinds on the bathroom windows – but overall it was very well equipped.
