4-bedroom Villas in Koh Samui, Thailand

The third largest island in Thailand, Koh Samui is just 21km at its widest point and 25km at its longest. The hinterland consists of forested limestone hills and the shoreline is made up of countless coconut palm-fringed beaches and bays.

Traditionally a coconut plantation and fisherman's haven, in the last few years the island has grown into a major holiday destination with regular connections to Bangkok and direct flights from Hong Kong and Singapore. Despite rapid development, Samui is small enough to retain its charm and its modest size also makes it a convenient, laid back location even during busy seasons.

As well as fine beaches, Samui is known for recreation, relaxation and fine food. The blue waters of the Thai Gulf provide a wealth of possibility for water sports, while on land the island is well known for its professional and indulgent spas and health retreats. Fresh seafood is a specialty at most of Samui's restaurants, but you can also enjoy food from almost every corner of the globe thanks to the island's strong international influences.

Each beach on Samui has its own particular character and ambience. The east coast beaches of Chaweng and Lamai are busy, commercial areas with everything from beach vendors to fast food chains, while to the north, Bang Rak and Bo Phut have a more relaxed local village atmosphere. Beaches like Lipa Noi and Laem Set on the western and southern shores feel much more remote and untouched.

Koh Samui combines comfort and convenience with a sense of real escape and this has made it a popular choice for residential as well as tourist development. The island is an eclectic blend of nature and sophistication, one that draws repeat visitors every year to indulge in its tropical delights.

Akuvara

Akuvara

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Akuvara's contemporary design may not be to everyone's taste, but once you settle into the tropical lifestyle on offer you soon appreciate the beauty of keeping things simple.  The clean open spaces suit the environment and technological enhancements like the music and movie hard drive in the living rooms give the villa a distinctive, modern feel.

Initially, we felt the three lounge areas to be excessive, but with kids in tow the option of a separate entertainment room in the evenings definitely appeals, and the upper floor lounge adds a new dimension to sunset cocktails.

The staff are courteous and try hard to meet every request.  Despite the occasional language barrier they manage to run everything smoothly while remaining unobtrusive and the English-speaking manager ensures the villa runs smoothly and deals with things like tour bookings and restaurant recommendations.

This part of Lipa Noi offers a nice balance between seclusion and diversion.  You can happily spend days doing very little, but a short drive to the other side of the peninsular brings you to some decent resort restaurants, as well as the Nikki Beach Club, which is far more sophisticated a venue than you'd expect to find in such a secluded location.

In some ways Akuvara felt like two villas in one.  The studio at the rear of the property feels like an independent unit, but would certainly be a useful addition for a full family gathering.  The option to rent the villa without this fourth bedroom, however, makes Akuvara a great choice as a functional but comfortable family getaway.

If there is such a thing as villa envy then staying at Akuvara may inspire it as the villas close-by are significantly larger and more opulent than this one - but come with a much higher price tag.  Yet despite its compact design, Akuvara still boasts the full range of amenities required to provide a pleasant beachside escape.  Between the pool and the beach you never want for daytime pleasures and lazing in the ocean-front sala with a cool drink and a book must surely rate as one of life's finer moments.

Baan Puri

Baan Puri

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Our visit to Baan Puri involved two families and the kids had an absolute ball, which meant we did too. Water plays a major role at the villa, with ponds, waterfalls - that huge 30m pool - and the waters of the Gulf of Thailand a constant influence. A particular joy is that, despite the villa's opulence, it remains refreshingly simple and focuses on what matters most during a beach holiday: comfort, privacy and the opportunity to enjoy the location to the full.

The staff were an absolute delight with the villa manager taking the kids under her wing as only the Thai’s know how and a superb chef who could cater for all tastes.Every room is designed to keep you all but physically attached to the view and the options for outdoor enjoyment are countless. A particular pleasure was the large circular daybed on the terrace in front of the beachfront bedroom, reclining with a chilled drink, breathing in the breeze with the pool and ocean before you can only be described as sublime. Versatility is another advantage.

The sheer size of the property, combined with its sensitive design, mean Baan Puri can happily host several families. There's even a table tennis table, beach toys, a Kayak, bikes and DVDs to keep the kids entertained when not in the pool or on the beach. But the villa would also be perfect for a large gathering of friends or a special celebration. Who could resist a party on the lush beachside lawn? Of course, not even high-end residences escape the odd architectural over-indulgence, but at Baan Puri, the few there are add character rather than inconvenience. A cliché I know but the only real disappointment was leaving.

Ban Suriya

Ban Suriya

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Ban Suriya is one of those villas where, as reviewers, you find yourself looking for something negative just to tick the ‘Surprises’ box. We failed.

Our time passed far too quickly at Ban Suriya.  In fact, a month would probably be needed to enjoy the villa to the full. It's not only the salubrious surroundings that stand out, it's the way everything seems to go that extra mile to please.  There's not just a computer, there's an iMac packed with tunes that you can play through Bose speakers in the lounge and poolside sala (gazebo).  The gym is not only well-equipped, it has a fridge, and a plunge pool bigger than some other villas' main pool.  Even the DVD collection includes films you wish you'd remembered to buy at the airport.

Ironically, even with so many options we found ourselves drawn to the simplest – the tree house by the beach. The staff is clearly proud to be part of the Ban Suriya experience and the live-in manager was knowledgeable and keen to help us appreciate the villa's pleasures. Although each bedroom is noticeably different, with no one losing out, the master is clearly the most extravagant with its terrazzo bath tub and ensuite lounge. Clever design touches in the guest rooms like direct pool and jacuzzi access, indulgent semi-outdoor bathrooms and hand-picked, stylish furnishings ensure everyone is content, while those staying the twin bedroom by the games room and gym or cosseted in the beachfront pavilion also enjoy complete privacy and independence.

Eight people is probably the minimum number you would need to fully appreciate this villa (there's an option to rent four bedrooms outside peak season), otherwise you might struggle to appreciate its exuberance.

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Samlarn

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Samlarn

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

We struggled to tear ourselves away from the comfortable sun loungers at Baan Samlarn, except to take a cooling dip in the pool every so often, or a stroll on the beach with its postcard-perfect view at sunset. As dusk approaches, the villa puts on her party dress. Candles are lit by the staff who, though almost unseen, are always there when you need them, tea-lights are dotted across the lawn and lanterns are lit. Cocktails or a barbecue at the sala are a perfect way to welcome the sunset.

The villa emits a warm glow and delicious smells waft from the kitchen as dinner is prepared. The villa's in-house chef is talented, and has no problem preparing special requests. With fishermen strolling past on the beach, fresh seafood is a regular feature on the menu.

Samui offers plenty to do if active holidays are your thing, but if your goal is pure rest and relaxation, Baan Samlarn is a great choice: from the comfortable, peaceful bedrooms, to the double-bed-sized pool loungers and the assortment of lounge areas, you’ll easily find a place to rejuvenate, ready for another day of doing as you please. But don't be tempted to sleep away too much of your time when there's so much else to enjoy at the villa – Khun Fon will be happy to arrange for a professional masseuse to deliver a treatment either at the beach sala, or in the comfort of your room.

Although the ferry pier is only 200m away, it's no bother; you'll only hear a short horn toot as boats depart and dock. In fact, it adds interest to what would otherwise be an uneventful, albeit pretty beach scene.

Villa M

Villa M

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

Built in 2009, Villa M is a lovely townhouse villa. Compared with many villas I have seen, it is full of charm and character but also loaded with modern conveniences. In addition it has the dual benefits of being right on the beach as well as being at the quiet end of Fisherman’s Village (not that there is a noisy end) with its popular street of restaurants and bars. The Freshly painted stark white walls, well maintained furniture and fixtures looked striking which with all the memorabilia gives a real pleasant colonial touch. It’s a house I would love to stay in but not own – keeping all the white clean must be a nightmare! That said the two staff (manager and cleaner/waitress) did an excellent job whilst we were there. Note the staff are on from 8am until 5pm unless needed longer and the villa manager is shared with another villa up the road. I would definitely recommend getting a chef (extra charge) for at least a couple of nights as the food we had was exquisitely done, both Western and Asian.

Mullion Cove

Mullion Cove

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

We found Mullion Cove a refreshing change from many of the villas of this grade we've inspected on Koh Samui, some of which feel a little impersonal or built-to-rent. The cool white decor and homely furnishings here reminded us of a more traditional European style, but with a light, bright and energetic feel that suits the tropics. Because the garden is constantly in the sun, the glass-fronted living room and the bedrooms do get rather warm, but the air conditioning and closed bedroom curtains cooled things down and once we acclimatized, it was just as pleasant to stay outside from breakfast until sunset, switching between the pool, sun beds and sala. Although the master suite in the main pavilion is an extravagant affair, we chose the front bedroom pavilion as it was closer to the trees with its own private terrace. Waking up to the sound of the birds and flinging open the curtains to soak in the panoramic sea views more than made up for any lack of beach.

Mullion Cove lets you mix your holiday pleasures with ease. If you tire of the sun you can retreat to the lounge to catch up on films and books, constantly within reach of a tasty snack or cold drink. There's even an intercom in the kitchen to call the maid if she's not within sight and she's happy to help prepare meals beyond the included breakfast if you choose not to hire a chef. Bo Phut is perhaps Samui's least spoilt beachside village, so trips down the hill are a treat, especially to eat out and enjoy the beachside ambience. It's an easy drive, but you have to be careful at night because there are few lights on the road that leads to the villa. If you're sharing with family and friends, you probably won't venture out much as Mullion Cove is a fabulous place to relax and escape from the world.

Panacea Retreat - Kalya Residence

Panacea Retreat - Kalya Residence

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

From the moment we arrived at Kalya Residence and were greeted by warm smiles, welcome drink, cool towel and garland of flowers, we began to unwind.  We particularly enjoyed our daily yoga session with an experienced teacher, who knew our individual strengths and limits right away – a great perk! Although we were already feeling pretty relaxed by now, our in-villa massages were the icing on the cake!

The kitchen team really know their stuff at Panacea Retreat Residences.  The dishes we ordered from the a la carte menu were fresh, with an emphasis on quality ingredients and there was a good selection of meat, seafood, poultry, vegetarian and healthy options, as well as local favourites.  Meals other than breakfast are prepared in the estate’s professional kitchen, and special orders, eg barbecues, can be discussed with your villa host.  Breakfast is no simple affair, with the chef’s baking skills in evidence once again.  We recommend the freshly made yoghurt pots, with granola and fruit puree, and some avocado, smoked salmon, cold cuts or cheese to accompany your toast … or perhaps a full cooked breakfast if you have room?  Throughout the day, freshly brewed coffee and pots of tea were on offer, with the chef’s biscotti and cookies to keep us sustained until our next delicious meal.

The villa’s layout meant that we found it easy to both come together as a group, or retreat to the calmness of our bedrooms if we wanted some quiet time.  High-pressure rain showers were most enjoyable to freshen up before dinner, and guests in the master suite can also enjoy the luxury of a deep terrazzo bathtub.  We found the staff to be attentive, always there when we wanted a drink, yet unobtrusive, allowing us to enjoy the luxuries and surroundings of the villa undisturbed.

Suralai

Suralai

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

Villa Suralai is an exquisite villa. The views are superb – each of the bedrooms has full-length glass doors and excellent terraces. The swimming pool is fantastic (despite some minor calcification) with comfy sun loungers and the gazebo is a great place to relax and escape the heat of the day. The finish and thought which have gone into the villa makes it one of the best on Koh Samui although it would be nice to see a bit more colour and homely warm in the décor. During our stay, the villa manager was charming, knowledgeable and helpful to the extreme, more than making up for the simple English of the other staff. The chef turned out some awesome Thai meals and we understand he can produce a reasonable selection of western dishes too – do mention how hot you like your food though, Thais do like their spices! (Note the management company have a team of chefs so they do rotate a bit, all the chefs we used were excellent.) Don’t bother with shopping and provisioning – let the chef do it, you will pay 30% for the handling cost plus a government tax but it keeps you out of the supermarket which has to be a good thing while on holiday. An excellent villa for a group or family (see surprises), a superb party or wedding pad or perfect for a corporate retreat.

Tawantok Beach Villas – Villa 1

Tawantok Beach Villas – Villa 1

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

We particularly enjoyed the sense of space at the Tawantok Beach Villas created by the open walkways, skylights and uncluttered décor. Big groups won’t feel as though they’re on top of each other as there’s more than enough space between the lounge area, abundant pool loungers, the dining sala, and the master suite’s own private lounge.

We experienced the villa as a family. The staff were most accommodating, and it’s obvious they love having children as guests. We enjoyed the villa’s outdoor activities including a paddle in the kayaks and a game of volleyball on the beach (there’s a net set up). The tennis court is private, shared only with neighbouring Tawantok Beach Villa 2, which means that’s there’s no long waiting list to play, and the staff can even arrange a tennis coach (advance notice required). We had a long walk on the beach to build up an appetite before dinner, and this highlighted the villa’s ideal location for those seeking peace and tranquillity, but without being completely isolated. The beach is clean, and as we walked along we passed local children swimming and playing in the sand, fishermen setting out their nets and even a sunset wedding – very popular on Lipa Noi Beach. There aren’t any troublesome beach vendors along here, but there are a few resorts and restaurants if you want to stop for a drink along the way. Even better, enjoy sundowners, as we did, lounging by the villa pool, taking in Lipa Noi’s famous sunset.

We chose our dinner from the villa’s suggestion menu and enjoyed both Thai and western dishes – salad, pasta and a vegetarian red curry, followed by a fresh fruit platter. What a treat to come back to a perfectly prepared meal after a long walk and a sunset swim!
