Villa Atacaya

Villa Atacaya

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

There’s something very special about Bali-living when you know that beyond the garden walls are only acres of rice fields and greener than green countryside. Villa Atacaya rests in a patch of south-west Bali that is (so far) only sporadically dotted with villas and villages, so we knew we were in for the privileged private country life when we arrived. We were not let down. This is a big, modern villa with plenty of space and contemporary design (predominantly in white with colour-themed bedrooms) that is absorbed immediately by the artwork of nature found in the forest and river that borders its eastern flank. Instant peace and serenity… if you like the constant hum of cicadas and birds, that is. We do. There’s a cooling breeze coming off the river and the pool is always at the perfect temperature for a dip. The local area is very rural and it’s worth taking the time to go out for a stroll through the rice fields, coconut groves and villages to fully absorb your surroundings. We walked down to the beach (3km) at sunset and sat on a bluff above the black sands and crashing waves with a coke and a coffee bought from one if the local warungs. Highly recommended! The service of a car and driver is a thoughtful provision in this remote location should you wish to go further afield. Please note that this villa is not suitable for toddlers due to the water gardens.

Avalon I

Avalon I

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

There are a lot of great things to say about this villa. The staff was incredible, warm and welcoming, and graciously put up with all our requests. They made this trip special for us and we’ll never forget it. The owners obviously put a lot of careful thought and attention into the villa. There are all kinds of interesting artefacts on display and plenty of travel guides and books on Asian interior design to browse through. The bedrooms were larger than we expected, and the TVs and DVD player were a big plus.

But the winning feature of Villa Avalon I has to be its location. It was a treat to find such a large and affordable villa so close to the beach in Canggu, and walking distance from clubs, bars and quirky boutiques. Being able to pop out to the beach without having to pack a day’s worth of stuff for the entire group was the most freeing holiday experience we’ve had in years. We could essentially wake up and go straight down to the beach, and then bob back and forth between the beach and the villa as we pleased. It’s that close.

Staying on a dead-end road was also really special because it meant the beachfront was much quieter than other beaches where cars and motorbikes could go. Walking through the La Laguna restaurant and crossing its wooden bridge to get to the ocean was a welcome detour and we spent plenty of time there too, watching the sunset, cocktail in hand. As big music fans, we liked hearing their weekend DJ sets from the alfresco areas of our villa. It gave the entire place a lively vibe. I would stay at Villa Avalon I again in a heartbeat.

Baan Bon Khao

Baan Bon Khao

Thailand » Phuket » Surin

Baan Bon Khao is one of the most welcoming villas we’ve stayed at, and we came away from our all-too-brief stay here feeling fully refreshed and restored.  With its spectacular sea and sunset views, friendly service and excellent Thai food beautifully presented, the villa is a truly inviting oasis.  Everything in the villa, from its majestic vaulted ceilings down to its polished wood floors, looks fresh and new, so we were surprised to learn that it is more than a decade old.  Having been a private residence for many years, the villa opened to guests for the first time after an extensive renovation in 2015.  It further benefits from having a full-time professional team on site, with the helpful villa manager as the main contact point.  The chef and housekeeping staff have limited English skills, but they’re keen to please, and we were impressed especially with the meal service, presented and served in such a way that it felt like an event, even for our casual breakfast on the pool terrace.

We also loved the Northern Thailand roof design, which really adds some grandeur to the open tropical look of the villa. Our camera’s memory card quickly filled up one evening as we tried to capture the silhouette of the pavilions at all angles against a blazing sunset sky reflected in the infinity-edge pool – one of those unforgettable sights that Instagram was created for! Being in an estate limits the sense of total privacy here, though the villas are arranged carefully to ensure none intrude upon one another. The villa’s lofty position still makes it a tranquil and secluded escape, even though it has to share the hill with neighbours.

Baan Puri

Baan Puri

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Our visit to Baan Puri involved two families and the kids had an absolute ball, which meant we did too. Water plays a major role at the villa, with ponds, waterfalls - that huge 30m pool - and the waters of the Gulf of Thailand a constant influence. A particular joy is that, despite the villa's opulence, it remains refreshingly simple and focuses on what matters most during a beach holiday: comfort, privacy and the opportunity to enjoy the location to the full.

The staff were an absolute delight with the villa manager taking the kids under her wing as only the Thai’s know how and a superb chef who could cater for all tastes.Every room is designed to keep you all but physically attached to the view and the options for outdoor enjoyment are countless. A particular pleasure was the large circular daybed on the terrace in front of the beachfront bedroom, reclining with a chilled drink, breathing in the breeze with the pool and ocean before you can only be described as sublime. Versatility is another advantage.

The sheer size of the property, combined with its sensitive design, mean Baan Puri can happily host several families. There's even a table tennis table, beach toys, a Kayak, bikes and DVDs to keep the kids entertained when not in the pool or on the beach. But the villa would also be perfect for a large gathering of friends or a special celebration. Who could resist a party on the lush beachside lawn? Of course, not even high-end residences escape the odd architectural over-indulgence, but at Baan Puri, the few there are add character rather than inconvenience. A cliché I know but the only real disappointment was leaving.

Baan Surin Sawan

Baan Surin Sawan

Thailand » Phuket » Surin

With a warm yet elegant style, caring staff and a peaceful location on a lush hillside, Baan Surin Sawan is an all-round superb tropical holiday villa. Though the Surin hills area is becoming more built up, this villa remains well out of the fray and we were delighted to see many birds and butterflies flitting over the pool, even a squirrel scampering around in the palm trees. The trickle of flowing water and the light tinkling of brass temple bells in the breeze, made a soothing soundtrack to our stay.

The friendly, efficient service by the villa manager and chef (overseen by a professional management company) is complemented by the care of the owner’s long-term live-in maid. Thoughtful touches included being welcomed with a cold coconut drink, refreshing towels and a garland on arrival and being offered the owner’s own homemade muesli mix at breakfast (quite tasty by the way). The full-time chef specialises in Thai cuisine and we were given the chance to try some of her Southern Thai specialties including the delicious poh-pia pak (spring rolls with spicy dipping sauce). We selected our dishes individually but there’s a fixed-price set meal menu, too, which we’d recommend as a good sampler to try for guests unfamiliar with Thai cuisine. The dining room is rather grand in design and perfect for evening meals. For outdoor dining there’s a table in the back garden barbecue area and the poolside sala could be used for an informal meal. If we’d stayed longer we would have probably arranged to have the garden table brought out to the pool terrace so we could enjoy the sea views while dining alfresco.

The overall layout of the villa offers a good set-up for two families or an extended family. The entertainment room and pantry plus two ensuite bedrooms on the bottom floor give the feel of being in a separate apartment with plenty of privacy, though we expect couples might battle for the upstairs master suite, which sits majestically in its own poolside pavilion with the best sea views!

Baan Taley Rom

Baan Taley Rom

Thailand » Phuket » Natai Beach

Moments before we arrived at the beautiful Baan Taley Rom, we had to pause in our car to wait out a Natai Beach-style traffic jam: a herd of buffalo was being ushered across the road, destined for some luscious green grazing grounds nearby, we guessed. And so began our delightful immersion into rural Thai charm.

It was well worth the wait. Once we stepped through the villa’s elegant arched entrance we found a regal yet welcoming holiday home of contemporary style that offered a fine balance to the dazzling sea and sky views beyond. Sitting in splendid isolation on an acre of absolute beachfront land, Baan Taley Rom is a rare find in the Phuket area. With so much space to work with, the villa has an exceptional range of facilities: a glittering 25-metre pool, a fully equipped gym, a spa room, wide sundecks and landscaped gardens for outdoor play. Though the villa facilities alone offered plenty to keep us occupied, having a friendly team of staff on hand ensured that we were never left wanting. Gathering for a family-style Thai meal prepared by the villa chef while watching the tropical sunset paint the sea and sky a rosy-golden glow is an experience we will not soon forget.

Ban Haad Sai

Ban Haad Sai

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bang Rak-Big Buddha

It's not difficult to settle into 'the House on the Beach'. As soon as the sliding gate shuts out the roadside bustle, a relaxed atmosphere takes hold, coaxing you to kick off your shoes and switch into holiday mode.

The villa was originally designed as two separate residences and although this creates a few anomalies (such as two lounges, which seems a little excessive), we felt the symmetry between the left- and right-hand accommodation would allow families or friends the choice to spend time with or without each other when sharing the villa.

The more significant division perhaps, is between the front and rear. Staying in one of the front-facing master suites is a real treat as you enjoy constant sea views, instant pool access and special additions like sunken outdoor bath tubs but, depending on the group dynamic, this may cause a little bedroom envy with those occupying the rear guest rooms. Having said that, everyone benefits from abundant communal comforts and homely touches (including a good selection of books and DVDs) which, combined with the great sound system and the huge flat-screen TV in the AV room, add to the general sense of privilege.

Days slip by gently at the poolside, with the wide, comfy hammock providing the ultimate excuse to do nothing but read, swim and snooze. To really appreciate the villa's idyllic location and make the most of the relaxed atmosphere that pervades, ask the helpful staff to set a table on the deck or lawn in the early evening, then drift from sundowners into dinner before turning up the music for a pool party.

Ban Suriya

Ban Suriya

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Ban Suriya is one of those villas where, as reviewers, you find yourself looking for something negative just to tick the ‘Surprises’ box. We failed.

Our time passed far too quickly at Ban Suriya.  In fact, a month would probably be needed to enjoy the villa to the full. It's not only the salubrious surroundings that stand out, it's the way everything seems to go that extra mile to please.  There's not just a computer, there's an iMac packed with tunes that you can play through Bose speakers in the lounge and poolside sala (gazebo).  The gym is not only well-equipped, it has a fridge, and a plunge pool bigger than some other villas' main pool.  Even the DVD collection includes films you wish you'd remembered to buy at the airport.

Ironically, even with so many options we found ourselves drawn to the simplest – the tree house by the beach. The staff is clearly proud to be part of the Ban Suriya experience and the live-in manager was knowledgeable and keen to help us appreciate the villa's pleasures. Although each bedroom is noticeably different, with no one losing out, the master is clearly the most extravagant with its terrazzo bath tub and ensuite lounge. Clever design touches in the guest rooms like direct pool and jacuzzi access, indulgent semi-outdoor bathrooms and hand-picked, stylish furnishings ensure everyone is content, while those staying the twin bedroom by the games room and gym or cosseted in the beachfront pavilion also enjoy complete privacy and independence.

Eight people is probably the minimum number you would need to fully appreciate this villa (there's an option to rent four bedrooms outside peak season), otherwise you might struggle to appreciate its exuberance.

Villa The Beji

Villa The Beji

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Our stay at Villa The Beji was delightful.  The villa is incredibly well laid out, especially for families – it would make a smashing venue for two or three families to share.  All six bedrooms are fabulously spacious and have extravagant bathrooms, and the living areas are all strategically positioned for parents to keep a watchful eye on children.  There’s a huge amount to do at the villa itself – swimming pool, home theatre room, table tennis and gym, as well as a tennis and basketball court and a mini football pitch (the latter shared with the adjacent sister villa).  If that’s not enough, nearby is the beach and the Finns Recreation Club, which provides first class recreational and leisure facilities. Guests of Villa The Beji enjoys complimentary access to the exclusive Finns Recreation Club Guests for up to 6 guests daily.

The Beji’s staff were a real pleasure and made our stay very easy – the chef produced great food, the waiters and waitresses were discreetly attentive and the villa manager very keen to assist.  They made the villa particularly hard to leave when it was time to head home!

Bendega Nui

Bendega Nui

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Staying at Bendega Nui is a wonderful way to experience Bali. The neighbouring paddy fields scattered with colourful flags and tinkling bells to scare the birds away from the ripening rice; the crowing cockerels; clear blue skies and amazing sunsets were a delight in themselves, but to enjoy all of this from the luxurious surroundings of this stunning new villa (completed end 2009) was a real privilege.

The super-comfortable beds (I felt like Alice in Wonderland climbing up onto the deep mattress of the canopied four-poster in our bedroom!), bold colourful fabrics, tasteful pieces of art, impressive sound system and blissful swimming pool were just some of the features that made a very clear statement about how much care and thought Bendega Nui's owners (who regularly stay there themselves) have put into the design and finish of their tropical holiday home.

In recent years, the Canggu area has sprouted some exciting new venues for drinks and/or dinner – several of which you can walk to from the villa. That said, we felt no desire to eat out after sampling the chef's culinary creations: From roasted vegetable salads, to steak and chips, to chicken curry, cheesecakes and crème brulée – everything was beautifully presented, absolutely delicious, and served with a smile.

Bendega Nui is a peaceful retreat; breezes from the nearby coast kept things cool wherever we chose to relax – and there was no shortage of options, from the hidden deck beyond the pool, to the shady reading pavilion next to one of the pretty ponds, to the bedroom balconies with their lovely views. And what better way to round off the day than with a glass of wine and a good movie on the big-screen plasma TV, or a social game of pool over a couple of beers – listening to whatever takes your fancy from the vast selection on the Sonos sound system (or bring your own – iPod docks in every bedroom). We felt that Bendega has something to please everyone in the family and would also make a great place for a group of friends to get together for a holiday, as well as (especially if you rent the one-bedroom suite and three-bedroom Bendega Rato next door) an exceptional and truly memorable wedding venue.
