Panacea Retreat - Purana Residence

Panacea Retreat - Purana Residence

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bo Phut

From the moment we arrived at Purana Residence and were greeted by warm smiles, welcome drink, cool towel and garland of flowers, we began to unwind.  We particularly enjoyed our daily yoga session with an experienced teacher, who knew our individual strengths and limits right away – a great perk! Although we were already feeling pretty relaxed by now, our in-villa massages were the icing on the cake!

The kitchen team really know their stuff at Panacea Retreat.  The dishes we ordered from the a la carte menu were fresh, with an emphasis on quality ingredients and there was a good selection of meat, seafood, poultry, vegetarian and healthy options, as well as local favourites.  Meals other than breakfast are prepared in the estate’s professional kitchen, and special orders, eg barbecues, can be discussed with your villa host.  Breakfast is no simple affair, with the chef’s baking skills in evidence once again.  We recommend the freshly made yoghurt pots, with granola and fruit puree, and some avocado, smoked salmon, cold cuts or cheese to accompany your toast … or perhaps a full cooked breakfast if you have room?  Throughout the day, freshly brewed coffee and pots of tea were on offer, with the chef’s biscotti and cookies to keep us sustained until our next delicious meal.

The villa’s layout meant that we found it easy to both come together as a group, or retreat to the calmness of our bedrooms if we wanted some quiet time.  High-pressure rain showers were most enjoyable to freshen up before dinner, and guests in the master suite can also enjoy the luxury of a deep terrazzo bathtub.  We found the staff to be attentive, always there when we wanted a drink, yet unobtrusive, allowing us to enjoy the luxuries and surroundings of the villa undisturbed.

Pandawa Cliff Estate - Villa Rose

Pandawa Cliff Estate - Villa Rose

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

Crossing the entrance hall into Villa Rose’s open level living area we were delighted by the ocean panorama spreading out before us. This is a million-dollar view – and we had it all to ourselves! The gardens are gorgeous; the manicured lawn of Japanese grass soft underfoot, and we found the pool with its two-tier sun-deck and turquoise-cushioned sun loungers the natural focus of our stay.

We think Villa Rose makes a great villa for four couples or two family groups. The four bedrooms each enjoy privacy as well as a small deck or balcony, the two twin rooms are perfect for children but can also be configured as kings for couples, and there are plenty of extra beds available for young children. A choice of seating areas allow for getting together as a group or breaking away for some peace and quiet.

With its expanse of gleaming marble floors and arrangement of sofas, Villa Rose at times felt more like an ultra-exclusive hotel. It did echo a bit – possibly because the common areas are completely free of curtains and blinds (no doubt to preserve the stunning view) – but a larger party than ours (we were only four) would probably be chatting too much to notice.

We found the staff to be charming, their service skills honed on luxury cruise ships around the world. The butlers were vigilant in anticipating and attending to our needs, whether we were in the villa or by the pool. And the villa chef impressed us with his breakfast dish of Eggs Benedict and a very tasty dinner of grilled prawns and seafood curry. (We were happy to hear that there are plans to run cooking courses for keen chefs among the guests.)

Panorama Summit

Panorama Summit

Thailand » Koh Samui » Choeng Mon

A line from The Carpenters’ song: “I’m on the top of the world, looking down on creation” pops into my mind as I lie on a sun lounger by the pool at Panorama Summit. Yet although we’re almost in the clouds, it’s only a short (but admittedly steep) drive to the village and pristine beach below. Nothing obscures the view here – even the hedges of white bougainvillea are perfectly trimmed to knee-height so you look over the pretty blossoms, past the coconut plantations, to the glistening temples and beyond to the sailboats in the bay.

And the view doesn’t fade with the sunset. At night you can see the village lights, a green glow from the squid fishing boats, fireworks from the beach resorts and, if you’re as lucky as we were, spectacular flashes of ‘dry lightning’. One of our favourite places to enjoy the view was from the front edge of the infinity pool, perhaps not ideal for those who suffer from vertigo though.

When we felt the need to pay for our over-indulgence at one of the many excellent local seafood restaurants, a friendly game of tennis (racket and ball hire available at the office) at the estate’s shared court, or a walk down to the beach – and back – did the trick.

We enjoyed delicious continental breakfasts prepared by the resident housekeeper, but if you want a cooked breakfast (or a private chef to prepare any other meal), this can easily be arranged for a reasonable fee plus provisions charged at cost plus 15%. Khun Pee, the villa manager, will gladly help you arrange a chef and can take care of many other concierge services too, be it an in-house massage or a boat trip to one of Samui’s outlying islands.

Pointe Sud

Pointe Sud

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Mirissa

Pointe Sud is wholly romantic. If I was lucky enough to have my husband ask me to choose anywhere in the world to build my dream home, I would also choose this fabulous spot! Superlative views and heart-warming history aside, the swimming pool here is definitely my favourite in Sri Lanka. It’s one that you feel an urge to swim (proper lengths) or wallow in day and night and has a lovely curved edge that you can comfortably lean on and look out to sea. Its to-the-side situation also gives a degree of privacy without separation from the rest of the house. The property is secure and the level of privacy here is unlike anywhere else around, and you get all of this without losing the amazing sea views or accessibility to the beach. A flight of 70 or so steps down from the pool terrace (this is not the best house for the less mobile) takes you to a lawn beside the beach that offers an attractive daytime alternative to the upper levels of the house; you can’t really swim in the sea here but there are a couple of paddling spots where you can have a soak. I loved that the house had numerous nooks for quiet time and loads of spots for dining (making it great for extended groups) with the option of daytime BBQs beside the beach. The bathrooms are modern though small, and the cosy colonial-style bedrooms purely for sleeping; admiring the views and lounging are best done from the front veranda. The staff of six were gentle, welcoming and really very discreet. Nothing was too much trouble and the lovely cook (who’s also an experienced nanny) will shop and prepare meals for you, presenting you with bills (for both food and drink) daily. At the moment it’s seafood and Sri Lankan cuisine only, so if you like curries this is a great place to enjoy them. We can’t fault the maintenance of the house, the presentation of the food and the staff’s responsiveness to our requests; they were excellent. However service is leisurely and suitably reflective of a practised home rather than the mechanical efficiency of a hotel.

Villa Pushpapuri

Villa Pushpapuri

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Sanur-Ketewel

You cannot fail to enjoy Villa Pushpapuri – we certainly did during our stay. The staff were very helpful, the food was good and the setting superb. It was a real treat to be able to see and hear the sea from almost everywhere - by the fabulous swimming pool, at dinner (inside or out) or from most of the bedrooms. We also really enjoyed retiring to the underground bar in the evening for a beer and game of pool. The villa is only a few years old (2006) but the quality of finish is excellent and the maintenance first class which it has to be given its exposed coastal location. The gardens are a delight and the bright interiors very enjoyable. Villa Pushpapuri would make an excellent choice for families as there is a load to do.

Villa Saan

Villa Saan

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

Our stay at Villa Saan left us in no doubt that this is a fantastic choice for anyone seeking a tropical holiday immersed in style and luxury.  The villa’s exquisite design, with its grand entrance foyer framing wide sea views, adds extra WOW factor to its spectacular hillside location, and a clever four-floor layout provides ample shared space and plenty of privacy within each bedroom suite.

Keeping cool is easy in the 19-metre infinity pool that appears to hover above the sea, and the jacuzzi set in the corner of the pool is just the spot for relaxation between swims.  Fancy a more private soak? Just head up to the master suite and ease into the plunge pool on its private balcony, or lie back and relax in the suite’s outdoor tub.  The two top-floor guest bedrooms also have bathtubs-with-a-view in their ensuite bathrooms.

Though it was hard to drag ourselves away from the sea and sunset views, we did enjoy watching movies in the villa’s sumptuous private cinema.  This, together with the games room and pool table, said to us that Saan is a villa designed for entertaining as much as relaxing.

The staff here are especially thoughtful. We arrived on a day of inclement weather and, since a dip in the pool wasn’t an option, were asked if we’d like a bottle of chilled wine brought up to the master suite as an alternative. We agreed that this was an excellent idea!

Villa Saanti

Villa Saanti

Thailand » Phuket » Natai Beach

It’s a matter of taste, of course, but we found the ubiquitous chocolate brown colour used in Villa Saanti a little overwhelming. That said, this was a very minor quibble when set against the clever design and attention to detail that makes this Phang Nga beachside villa a delight to stay in.

One thing worth mentioning at the start: Villa Saanti is very spacious. The land on which it stands is a third larger than most other Thailand villas in this range, so it never feels crowded. We didn’t fill it up – that would require 18 people ( extra charge to be applied in excess of 12 people) – but it was easy to tell that escaping for private moments would be easy.

Most appropriately for a getaway under the tropical sun, the focus of the villa is the twin pools, the larger overflowing into the smaller, which was clearly designed with children in mind. We spent a lot of time tanning and dipping, tanning and dipping.

The hyper-attentive staff – though they might not have understood every word exactly – always seemed to sense what we needed, when we needed it (sometimes before), and the villa manager, Mr Wow (an apt name if ever there was one for a luxury villa manager), who speaks flawless English, was always on hand to fill in linguistic gaps, or to book a tour, a taxi or a masseuse.

Although it’s tempting to stay at the villa and do as little as possible, the locale offers plenty for families or more energetic groups to do, from a water park to white-water rafting. Natai Beach itself may be very quiet, but it boasts one of Thailand’s top beach clubs, Baba, which happens to be just 10 minutes’ stroll along the sand from Villa Saanti. Sleek and sophisticated, Baba is a must-visit for an evening out.

Villa Samira

Villa Samira

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

At Villa Samira we really felt connected to the sea and sky. The villa is blessed with all-encompassing views and fabulous sunsets, and with its sleek style and cool blue, turquoise and white accents, it emanated a luxury yacht-like ambiance that had us dreaming of long sea voyages as we floated blissfully in the pool.

We think this villa would have extra appeal for groups of holidaying couples, with its three top-floor bedroom suites each offering lavish places to relax in privacy.  Battles might be waged, however, over the master suite, with its coveted private jacuzzi set on the terrace and extra-large dressing room and bathroom.  The three lower-floor guest rooms, though slightly smaller, still offer plenty of comfort and luxury.

The staff here are friendly and helpful and, though unobtrusive, are available throughout the day whenever needed.  The villa manager was keen to know exactly how we liked our meals prepared, and when we mentioned that we liked spicy food she added an extra side dish of chopped chilli at dinner time.  (We’d forgotten that when you say “spicy” in Thailand it means a white-hot fire! So it was thoughtful of her to give us control over the heat level.)

Samui Summit Estate - Alpha Villa

Samui Summit Estate - Alpha Villa

Thailand » Koh Samui » Choeng Mon

It's not often you get to sit with an iced drink in the sunshine and look out on 180 degrees of tropical splendour with twinkling bays left and right and palm-coated hills rising from the valley below.  At Alpha Villa you can't avoid it and the upper floor lounge and pool terrace alone is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing few days.

If you sleep in the comfortable master bedroom next to the pool, you may never bother venturing into the villa’s rather cavernous lower levels.  That's not to say guest bedrooms downstairs are disappointing - all four are quiet, private and slide open onto beautifully landscaped gardens.

Families or groups of friends will enjoy this villa because it offers plenty of options to combine shared time with more private moments.  Gathering in the TV room on the middle floor is like a trip to a laid-back cinema and it's easy to lose track of time in there, day or night, as you recline on the comfy cushions in air conditioned bliss, catching up on your movie back log.  But up on the pool deck is still the best way to lose a day; floating in the pool or gazing at the view.

Although there are a lot of steps to negotiate between floors (not ideal for seniors), the kids have plenty of space to explore and play safely (as long as you keep an eye on them around the pool area, which drops off sharply).  Alpha Villa is also one of the few hillside properties on Samui that's genuinely convenient for trips to the main beaches and tourist attractions (although a car will be necessary).

Efficient but unobtrusive staff and a wide range of optional services give you the freedom to be totally independent but also to spoil yourself with in-house indulgences like a private chef or daily massage if you so choose.  This is a great location, with versatile facilities and breathtaking views, as long as you don't mind a steep drive.

Villa San

Villa San

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

To be this close to the centre of vibrant Ubud but be surrounded by so much space, peace and comfort is a rare treat. Returning to the sanctuary of Villa San’s impressively long lap pool, lovely lawn and big comfy bedrooms and bathrooms after a hard day’s shopping or sight-seeing in and around Ubud was a delight. We were royally looked after by the lovely staff, who were keen to make sure that we enjoyed our stay and equally keen to share their knowledge of the area and the culture and customs of this lovely part of the island.

The master suite gets top marks for luxury, comfort and sheer quality. There are no TVs in the bedrooms (they get points for that, from us) but there are excellent TV/DVD/music systems in the two entertainment rooms and a smaller set, plus electronic games console , in the playroom. Bring your own DVDs though, as the owner’s collection is pretty small. Ditto iPods for the docks in every bedroom.

The villa is well-equipped for young children and extended families with three twin-bedded rooms and a great playroom. Having all the accommodation on one level is also be a big plus for guests that have trouble with steps.

The cool shady balé at the top end of the swimming pool is big enough to seat everyone, even where there’s a full house, and with Bose speakers installed in the rafters it makes the perfect place to chill out, enjoy the tropical scene and thank your lucky stars that you are staying at Villa San.

Oh yes, and we couldn’t help but imagine what an absolutely lovely place Villa San would be – marquee on the lawn, glass of Champagne in the hand, music drifting through the balmy evening air – for a casual wedding reception or other special celebration!
