Villa 1880

Villa 1880

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Wow. Wow. WOWWWWWWW. Villa 1880 took my breath away the moment I arrived — no mean feat for a seasoned and perhaps super-critical reviewer of luxury villas. What exquisite taste the owners must possess, to have created such an appealing vacation home … and filled it with such covetable furniture and curios.  This is surely a dream villa for anyone who appreciates inspiring design.

We loved the unique blend of old and new — how the 138-year old plantation house sat so comfortably (and seamlessly) between the contemporary buildings. And I admit swooning over the uber-photogenic interiors filled with achingly chic designer furniture sitting on extraordinary brass inlaid flooring. The media room was fabulously flamboyant with sprawl-inducive sofas covered in pink velvet, a cocktail cabinet …and whatever prompted them to think of a stuffed peacock?  Magic was in every detail — for example, our welcome drink was served in a hollowed-out pineapple, complete with bamboo straw, and breakfast included home-made strawberry jam, marmalade, and passion fruit preserve. And how sweet that half of the vanity in the kids’ bunkroom bathroom was set lower so little ones could reach the basin! (Though we were kid-free on our visit, we could imagine them cavorting around in the bunk room with glee).

But what made our experience truly special was the staff. On a tropical island awash with villas boasting well-trained staff, Villa 1880’s raises the bar. Gede the manager was so charming and helpful – and the same went for the butlers we met… even the gardener was chatty. And we cannot enthuse enough about Chef Adi — a rare find, passionate about food and with an inventive mind. The meals we had at Villa 1880 were absolutely superb — oh for another of his home-made panacottas! Ria the spa therapist was also excellent, with a decade working at Shiva Som in the Maldives….whatever you do, don’t leave without having at least one massage with her in the villa’s beautiful spa room.

Villa Asta

Villa Asta

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Of all the villas we’ve reviewed in Bali, Villa Asta is tops for families and kids. Never have we seen a villa so well set up for children’s entertainment, and with separate zones so that the adults (and kids) can escape from one another. It is no surprise that it's often booked for months in advance and guests return each year. The Guy Morgan-designed villa is full of common sense but without skimping on the luxury. In the three-bedroom pavilion, many guests will appreciate the flexibility of the bed configurations. Do note that whilst we rave about Villa Asta for families – these bedrooms are excellent for adults too, so the villa would work well for groups. The private plunge pools beside the master bedrooms’ pavilion are a gorgeous plus. Overall we found the villa to be a very bubbly and happy place, from the excellent staff who served us a wonderful barbecue during our inspection, down to the super friendly (and very fat!) koi fish, which are a great source of entertainment and fun to feed. What is also special about Villa Asta is the lovely stonework and thatch, which left us in no doubt that we were in Bali. When we revisited the property recently, we found that it has been immaculately maintained, with some new upholstered furnishings, a new marble floor, and upgraded facilities such as flat-screen TVs, computer and printer for guest use, and the addition of four bicycles.

Villa Atas Ombak

Villa Atas Ombak

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We loved Villa Atas Ombak. It’s big – nay grand – and majestic with a location that just can’t be found for love nor money these days. On arrival, we had to pinch ourselves to make sure we weren’t dreaming. This is the kind of place where you really come to relax and do nothing. And when we say ‘do nothing’ we mean just that, especially with the beach being on the front doorstep.

In the competitive world of luxury rental villas, it is often the staff that really makes a difference, and at Villa Atas Ombak they are definitely ‘on the ball’. Before we even knew we were thirsty, the housekeeper was strolling out to the lawn to see what we wanted to drink.

Should you feel like exploring beyond the villa grounds (and believe us, you may not!) there is a handful of local restaurants just a few hundred metres up the beach which make for an unpretentious, casual lunch or sunset drinks – so casual you don’t even need to change out of your swimmers. We didn’t! For guests who like to jog or amble along the sand, the distance to Kuta is a good challenge (with a taxi back of course).

Villa Cendrawasih

Villa Cendrawasih

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

This is a very classy contemporary-styled villa that truly represents luxurious modern Bali living, and fits perfectly into its fashionable neighbourhood. Villa Cendrawasih was only three months old at the time of our visit (August 2013) and we were very impressed by the high quality of its fixtures, fittings and furnishings. It’s a 900m walk from Jalan Petitenget’s shops and restaurants but only 400m from the beach. We liked the fact that the huge living and dining room could either be open to the pool and garden or closed off and air-conditioned, something that many villas don’t offer their guests: while visitors from colder lands might relish Bali’s balmy nights, those less enthused by an equatorial climate may not, so it’s nice to have the option.

We can recommend heading down to the beach (along the secret passageway) for sunset drinks – a Bali ritual for residents and visitors alike. Not only is it very relaxing but it’s also a great way to meet and have a chat with fellow holidaymakers.

Des Indes II

Des Indes II

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Des Indes Villa II is a hidden gem!  From the moment the bright red iron-studded entrance door swung open to reveal a row of saffron-robed stone-carved monks standing sentinel across the entrance pond, we were enchanted.  The clever layout makes the most of the space – land is at a premium in this uber-elite part of Seminyak, and we liked the way both (surprisingly large) bedroom suites were separated by the swimming pool, giving extra privacy.  The owners have a fine eye for Asian antiques and artefacts, and we loved the blend of heritage romance and modern luxury… where else can you take a bath surrounded by Chinese porcelain and Asian artefacts!

Favourite places to hang out? The huge four-poster bed swathed in mosquito netting, and the elegant marble-topped breakfast table by the pool. The staff greeted us with garlands of Frangipani flowers and refreshing ice-cold towels, and a special mention must go to the chef; his beautifully cooked Barramundi dinner made me so happy we chose to eat in rather than stroll down to La Lucciola!  We were one couple staying, and think this would be a rather lovely honeymoon spot; but imagine two couples or a family with two kids would be equally happy here.

Kalimaya I

Kalimaya I

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Wow! Villa Kalimaya I was a surprise from the moment we opened the gilded Balinese doors and stepped into its garden. Yes, garden!  Not a handkerchief-sized patch eaten up by a pool, as is the case in so many villas in densely built Seminyak, but a huge expanse of lawn edged with travellers palms, hibiscus and frangipani trees – big enough to lose three guest bedroom pavilions which were completely camouflaged from view!

While there are two huge living rooms and an indoor dining room within the main house, we spent most of our time idling on over-sized cushions in the large poolside pavilion, and chose to take our meals alfresco. Speaking of meals, the cook whipped up a delicious Singapore laksa for us – apparently a doddle for him as he regularly prepares gourmet dinner parties for 20; no wonder most guests forego the pleasures of the many fine restaurants within an easy walk of the villa in favour of his home cooking.

The cook, butlers and housekeepers – all charming and helpful – divide their time between all four Kalimaya villas set along the same quiet lane. We considered this a bonus as it means guests benefit from a professional team, but privacy is not compromised by their continued presence.

We appreciated that Kalimaya has been designed as a home – originally for entertaining her royal friends, the owner told us. Comfortable, well equipped and full of personal art and furniture collections, the place feels larger-than-life. This is the perfect villa for an extended family or groups of friends who want to be sociable and yet still be able to get away from each other; the bedrooms are large and designed for privacy, there are lots of different seating and dining areas, and we were still discovering discreet get-away-from-the-crowd hideaways right up to our departure.

Villa LeGa

Villa LeGa

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Returning to Villa LeGa recently, almost everything was the same as it was the last time.  And by that we mean, fantastic! The staff remembered us from our last visit and it felt a bit like coming home.  There is a new beach club and restaurant next door now, but the noise was not really noticeable. On the few occasions when they have a special events going on, we suspect that villa guests will probably be dancing along with the best of them! And as they offer a permanent discount to villa guests, it’s a win–win situation.  The villa now boasts a new rooftop deck right at the front of the property, with sun loungers and umbrellas that look straight out to sea.  All very Ibiza and la de dah.  We love it! LeGa is not only a stunning property, but it boasts a fabulous location and comes with an excellent staff team who were very good at anticipating our needs before we had even knew them ourselves. There is a good menu too with an excellent choice of western fusion cuisine.  Whilst the interiors of LeGa are stylish and beautifully arranged, the property still feels very homely. The ground floor living areas spill onto the swimming pool terrace and, as such, are very sociable, as is the whole villa; it feels fun, young and sophisticated.  My favourite spot was the upper-floor terrace with its great views over the beach and sea.  It’s a fab venue for cocktails at sunset. The villa might not have a lot of outside space, but what there is works well and the gardens are meticulously maintained; wander beyond the villa and you have the whole beach to explore.

Villa Shambala

Villa Shambala

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

A beautiful villa that sleeps ten plus, and is right in the heart of Seminyak? Sign us up! Villa Shambala will definitely be a popular choice amongst the cognoscenti with large families or groups of party people who simply dig the happening atmosphere of Seminyak.  The design, with two bedrooms and a TV room in the main building and three bedrooms and another TV room in the  guest house, is a great layout for bringing the in-laws or giving the teenagers (and yourselves) some space.  The staff are friendly and very efficient, and the cook can turn his hand to anything.  Make sure you grab yourself a massage or an Ayurvedic treatment in the specially-built spa room adjacent to the pool.  The owner is an artist and jewellery designer; some of her unique creations can be seen in the villa and are available for guests to purchase.

Returning to Villa Shambala in August 2014 we were happy to see that the same high standards are not only being maintained, but have been enhanced by two smart new facilities; a sun deck with a beautiful backdrop, and an outdoor-but-undercover dining area with built-in barbeque which has been installed next to the living room.

Villa Shinta Dewi Seminyak

Villa Shinta Dewi Seminyak

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Shinta Dewi Seminyak is such a pretty villa; it brought grins to our faces as soon as we walked in. And we were given such a warm greeting by the staff, with a frangipani garland each, a welcome drink and cool refreshing towel. The villa is built around an inner courtyard dominated by the pool, and although there’s not much garden the plants and flowering trees are gorgeous. The interiors are also lovely, with very comfortable sofas, chairs, beds and sunbeds, and sophisticated soft furnishings. It’s a tasteful, grown up villa, and this is also reflected in the service, which is very discreet. The staff have big smiles and the chef’s forte is a great homemade pizza and a hearty breakfast (breakfast is included in the villa rate; all other provisions are on guest account).

We certainly had no complaints on our return visit to Villa Shinta Dewi Seminyak. This charming villa has been beautifully maintained and refreshed with new soft furnishings, wall coverings and generous licks of paint. There are now two 47-inch flat screen TVs, one in the open-air lounge and one in the media room which converts into a fifth bedroom when required. The villa manager told us that all the guests love this room. In fact, reviewing the great choice of guest relaxation areas at Villa Shinta Dewi Seminyak, and after having spent a bit of time in the delightful sunset lounge, we decided to up the score a bit. We also increased the score for the staff, they’re a great team.

Villa Windu Asri

Villa Windu Asri

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

The fountain courtyard that lies just behind the front door of Windu Asri is a perfect regal welcome for the splendid residence that lies inside.  Of course, we had seen the pictures online but it didn’t really prepare us for the sheer grandeur of the villa.  Imagine a Raffles Hotel, built for one privileged group complete with a private swimming pool and all the bells and whistles of fine living but with the benefit of 21st century hindsight.  Everything about Windu Asri accommodated our love of comfort, technology, space and natural light.  It was also wonderfully quiet – all we could hear as we lazed beside the pool was birdsong.

A big shout out must go to the staff, without whom our stay would have been nowhere near as relaxing and satisfying as it was.  They made us feel as comfortable as if we were family and as special as if we were honoured guests.  When drinks were getting low they were there with a refill, be it beer or afternoon tea.  And the chef’s talents cannot be over-emphasized.  Although the villa is in a prime location for all the great new restaurants for which Bali is becoming increasingly renowned, we were more than happy to eat at the villa for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The food is beyond delicious… as is the villa.  Book it!
