Villa Amanzi Kamala

Villa Amanzi Kamala

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

We just had so much fun staying at Villa Amanzi. We were blown away by how beautifully its unusual modern design fits with the tropical setting. On seeing the villa for the first time, we could just imagine this scenario: A man meets his architect at a bar to discuss plans for a new villa. The man orders a drink: "I'd like it on the rocks, please!" The architect dutifully executes this request, et voila! Amanzi is born.

But this was no accident, of course. Amanzi's design takes full advantage of the property's unusual natural features and does not impose less imaginative people might have simply blasted the rock out to make way for the villa.

We enjoyed trying out all the high-tech bells and whistles such as the touch-screen control panel and were constantly surprised by all the fun little design details such as the two 'windows' on the swimming pool's bottom that formed funky blue 'skylights' to the floor below one in the family room, the other above the balcony.

Another plus was that all the electronic controls and buttons were clearly labelled and easy to use even for techno-phobes such as ourselves. In the end, however, nature won out as we delighted in listening to the crashing waves and birdsong, and watching in awe as the sunset skies turned the infinity pool into a luminous blaze of gold, pink and red.

Jivana Beach Villas - Villa Ananda

Jivana Beach Villas - Villa Ananda

Thailand » Phuket » Natai Beach

Unique, luxurious, private and peaceful … Villa Jivana Ananda is a superb illustration of a private villa managed with such expertise that it exudes all of the convenience of a six star hotel. Beach holidays are at their best when, at the end of a long, sandy and salty day, you can shower, refresh and enjoy a long cool drink and a divine meal prepared by the chef.

At Villa Ananda, our days were filled with swims in the ocean, searching for shells in the rock pools, enjoying fabulous Thai cuisine and relaxing in style. It is the perfect choice for families or friends. The villa is safe and practical for children – ours had an absolute ball here - yet sufficiently private and certainly spacious enough to give everyone ample room to themselves. Ananda has to be one of the best villas we have seen in Asia. Note this villa does not permit weddings or large functions. If this is something you are interested in look at its sister, Villa Shanti.

Malaiwana - Villa Haleana

Malaiwana - Villa Haleana

Thailand » Phuket » Nai Thon

Exploring Villa Haleana is like embarking on a treasure hunt. Every turn elicited ever more “oohs” and “aahs” as we wandered around the villa’s dazzling interiors and marvelled at the views.  Haleana was bathed in a golden glow as the sun shone through its sea-view frontage, which is made almost entirely of glass, while the pool and the ocean added a sapphire sparkle all around.  Opening the door to the spa room was like unearthing a shimmering pearl.  As amazing as this room looks in the photographs, pictures don’t fully illuminate its tranquillity and grace – there’s a certain aura here that simply melted our tensions away, even before we sunk into the jacuzzi.  It’s a lingering regret that we didn’t take the opportunity to book a massage treatment during our brief visit!  Another real gem at Haleana is the staff.  The amiable and generous-minded villa manager and the excellent full-time chef ensured that we enjoyed royal treatment throughout our stay.

Malaiwana - Villa M

Malaiwana - Villa M

Thailand » Phuket » Nai Thon

Villa M underwent a million-dollar makeover just before our visit in 2017, and it was sparkling like brand new.  And that’s a five-star down-to-the-tiniest-detail brand new.

The villa is also in an absolutely stunning location, high up on a steep wooded hill, presiding over a 180-degree ocean view.  Coming through the surprisingly modest front door, we were blown away by that view and its reflection in the infinity-edge pool.

When we finally dragged ourselves away for a tour of the villa, we found that every door we opened led to more delights; one superbly designed room after another.  All the rooms feature large modern art canvasses – most in bright colours.  It’s almost as if the villa knows it has to do something pretty spectacular to compete with the view for your attention, and these amazing art pieces are it.

Upstairs, the walls of Villa M are almost entirely of glass, so that indoor luxury and outdoor amazement merge.  But even on the lower floor every room has that same breathtaking view.  It’s really quite delightfully distracting.

After chilled sundowners to accompany the evening’s heavenly spectacle and supper looking out at the green and white lights of the fishing boats, we decided to leave the delights of the entertainment room for another day and just relax in the super-comfortable living room.

Making this all so much more luxurious were the amiable and generous-minded villa manager, her assistant and the chef, who ensured that we enjoyed royal treatment throughout our stay.

Villa Nautilus

Villa Nautilus

Thailand » Phuket » Ao Po

With its huge windows and bright open plan, Nautilus has an easy elegance that made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. Not that we weren’t dazzled by the spectacular views across Phang Nga Bay, too! It’s a villa ideal for a family holiday of play and rest, with its 20-metre pool extending across the front making it easy for us to relax inside in the comfy living area while keeping an eye on the kids splashing around. We loved having the delightful dilemma of whether to dine inside at the stately dining table or out on the terrace, with superb views to enjoy either way. And the food did not disappoint, with the chef preparing a delicious medley of Thai dishes including spicy steamed sea bass and Penang chicken curry that even our picky pre-teen was keen to try. Staying on the lesser-travelled east coast of Phuket may not be to everyone’s taste, but we love it here! Ao Po with its mangrove-fringed coastline and rural landscapes is one of our favourite areas of the island, with a still-undiscovered feel about it. And anyone keen to hop aboard a boat or kayak will find Nautilus to be a handy base for their sea exploration.

Villa Sapna

Villa Sapna

Thailand » Phuket » Cape Yamu

Villa Sapna really bowled us over with its amazing east-coast setting and sublime design.  Every sense-pleasing thing we could dream of in a tropical holiday villa was to be found here: sunrise views, sunset views, sea views … yes!  Add to that captivating paintings by celebrated Asian artists, modern architecture with a touch of Thai elegance, vibrant living areas that fully open to lush gardens, a 20-metre swimming pool, and attentive staff.  And a gym.  And a private chef who creates heavenly Thai tastes.  And for ease of access, a lift.  It’s hard to describe how uplifting it feels to be here, the quality of the tropical light and the vivid skies and the total serenity – just book it and see for yourself!

We also thought that, with its balance of bedrooms and living rooms arranged across two separate pavilions, the villa’s layout was ideal for extended families or two families seeking added privacy.  We’re also partial to the Cape Yamu area of Phuket as we prefer to avoid the tourist crowds.  Though it’s becoming something of an enclave for ultra-luxury villas and resorts, much of the area is still swathed in native jungle and plantations, with fishing and farming the main activities of the local people.

Sava Beach Villas - Villa Tievoli

Sava Beach Villas - Villa Tievoli

Thailand » Phuket » Natai Beach

With its white-sand beach, sea breezes, open design and wealth of facilities for entertainment and unwinding, Villa Tievoli is one of the most uplifting villas we’ve visited.  Natai Beach is gaining a reputation as an exclusive area for discerning travellers seeking both pampering and peace, and Tievoli at Sava certainly delivers on these fronts, especially with its own spa facilities and two professional spa therapists in-house!  Those who prefer a more modern style will appreciate Tievoli’s design, which uses both industrial and natural materials to bring life and a sense of openness to every room.

With the large pool lined with several sun beds, sofas and cute ‘apple’ loveseats, new villa guests might think they have arrived at a hotel – it’s just so spacious and elaborately furnished both inside and out. Tievoli was designed as an ideal venue to hold special events; we were told it has already hosted some great weddings and that the management company can liaise with local event planners to help cater and service larger events.

With its seven bedrooms arranged in two separate wings, the villa’s ideally laid out for two families or groups wanting to share a holiday without imposing too much upon one another.  Although there’s plenty of peace and privacy here, Tievoli is part of a seven-villa estate so it lacks the feel of a total hideaway.  But with an empty, 10-kilometre-long beach at your doorstep and mostly rural surrounds, a tranquil stay is all but assured here.  Those hoping for a peek into Thailand’s more traditional life don’t have to travel far to find it.  Though our stay was too brief to try this ourselves, we were told that other guests have delighted in wandering down the beach to meet the local fishermen and buy their day’s catch fresh off the boat!

Baan Lom Talay

Baan Lom Talay

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

With the rich life and vivid tropical colours of Kamala Bay stretched out broadly before it, Baan Lom Talay’s location is about as good as it gets. When we could tear ourselves away from watching herons and Brahminy kites swooping over the sea from the ample terraces, the bedrooms certainly provided a fantastic retreat. Each of the five suites is a mini-villa in itself and a group of friends or an extended family will really enjoy the privacy and comfort they offer. The beautiful vaulted ceilings in three of the bedrooms give them extra grandeur and there are few better ways to toast the setting sun than while sitting in a big, bubbling outdoor jacuzzi. We enjoyed the villa’s lush, green surrounds as much as its sea views: the grounds are abloom with native trees and exotic plants, and the pink and white bougainvilleas set in boxes on all the terraces offer a striking colour contrast to the sea.

One does not appreciate Baan Lom Talay’s full size and glory until stepping inside. The stairs alone – and there are many! – are quite a wonder in the way they zigzag between the villa's four levels. The pool’s shallow section is a great feature for families, though parents will need to be watchful since there are no barriers to the deep end .

We found the villa staff to be excellent, offering us a warm welcome and being quick to assist whenever needed. We appreciated the personal touches, such as bringing fresh coffee to our bedroom terrace first thing in the morning, saving us a trip down to the kitchen. The villa manageress is especially helpful and speaks good English. Truly, the only difficulty we faced at Baan Lom Talay was leaving it!

Baan Paradise

Baan Paradise

Thailand » Phuket » Patong

We thought Baan Paradise would be a great villa for groups and couples looking to stay close to lively Patong. Families, especially those with older children keen to indulge in the action of Patong, will also appreciate its private location and its facilities (pool table, massive TV with DVD player, Playstation II etc). However, since there is no garden, the villa might be a constraint for younger children with plenty of energy and, whilst the shallow end of the pool is fine for a paddle, the infinity edge might call for some parental supervision. The entertainment room downstairs is ideally placed beside the twin/triple room. Since the second (more Asian-style) kitchen and staff quarters open onto the entertainment room the villa staff tend to congregate here; whilst an advantage of this is that they can keep an eye on the kids, the downside is that we often felt like we were intruding on the staff if we wanted to come down and watch the TV. The ground floor bedrooms could do with a low table or luggage rack for suitcases but, in compensation, all come with a delicious selection of toiletries! The larger bedrooms on the top floor were the most private, but the ground floor bedrooms open right onto the swimming pool and might suit some people better. Groups of adults might want to consider using only the four ground and first floor bedrooms since the twin in the basement is better suited for children, and not so private. The cook prepares simple meals according to a menu (predominantly Thai food except for a couple of sandwich options) and can also prepare international meals and BBQs on request. We thought that the complimentary case of Heineken (and soft drinks) given to us on arrival was a nice touch. While the villa staff only speak basic English, the manager is happy to assist with everything from travel arrangements (complimentary airport transfers) to restaurant reservations.

Villa Maria

Villa Maria

Thailand » Phuket » Nai Harn

‘Summertime, and the living is easy’ crooned Ella Fitzgerald, and at Villa Maria it’s easier still, with no less than three living rooms to spread out in plus a comfy outdoor sitting area to boot. This, along with the villa’s two-bedroom self-contained suite and its sheer size, made us think – slyly – that Maria might be the perfect holiday choice for families who don’t get along! Of course, families who do get along will have an absolute ball here with the big pool-garden-party area and loads of space both indoors and out for playing and relaxing – not to mention the TVs, movies and music for those who love their electronic delights. Thoughtful features for families include trundles under all the single beds, accommodating an extra four young children (and allowing kids to have ‘sleepovers’ in each other’s rooms) and the detachable pool safety fence. With meals mostly taken care of by the full-time cook and a wealth of dining choices to enjoy within minutes, the only pressing issue of the day here was, ‘Beach or pool?’ Being located so close to the beach we could happily do both. (Declaration of bias: Nai Harn is our favourite beach in Phuket, so we are likely to have extra fondness for any villa located in this area!)

Maria is popular, so early booking is essential. When we arrived we caught the staff busy cleaning up the ‘aftermath’ of what looked to have been an exceptionally fun-filled family holiday: overflowing boxes of toys, pool toys and inflatables piled up on the terrace, extra chairs wedged in around the large outdoor dining table... Overall, this is simply a fun and festive villa. Our only regret was not having enough people with us during our visit to take full advantage of all the party zones!
