7-bedroom Villas in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.

The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.

Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.

The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.

Villa Batujimbar

Villa Batujimbar

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Sanur-Ketewel

With so many ‘ultra villas’ in Bali nowadays boasting all the bells, whistles and 80-plus-inch televisions, it’s always nice to stay in a grand old villa like Batujimbar, a classic example of the original Bali style, where the sizzle is in the foundations and the history, and not the marketing. Batujimbar comes from a time when wealth and grandeur was wrapped up in simplicity and we revelled in it. Knowing that this was the place of choice for the likes of Mick Jagger, and chums, makes it somehow just a little more special, too.

Celebrity hype aside, the physicality of the villa is magnificent in its own right. It ticked all the boxes for us and it was a real pleasure to stay here and take a trip back in time. The grounds are huge, the bedrooms super-comfortable and the gardens are overflowing with trees and flowers under a tropical sun, with the beach just beyond the front gate making for a most relaxing stay.  Oh, and the food served from the villa’s kitchen is something else!

The Chalina Estate

The Chalina Estate

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Ever woken up to find yourself facing a giant postcard? Well it happened to us at Chalina Estate this morning. Having left the master suite curtains open, we awoke to rice fields and coconut trees of the deepest green against a backdrop of blue sky and mountains, all neatly framed by wide glass doors. Wish-you-were-here picture perfect and not a bad way to start a day.

And it just got better and better. We had a leisurely breakfast of perfectly cooked eggs and too much coffee before eventually relocating to the sun beds beside the pool to bake in the sun, read books, swim and be waited on by the butlers: and hardly a man-made noise to be heard all day, unless you count the clink of ice cubes in an empty glass anticipating a refill.

Villa Hansa

Villa Hansa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

As spiritual souls with environmentally and community-aware leanings and a thirst for local culture, this one-of-a-kind villa has our name all over it.  Villa Hansa (no coincidence it’s named after the Goddess of Knowledge) offers visitors so much more than just another Balinese deluxe villa (although the design is pretty gorgeous too).  The devoted staff and ever-smiling manager sustain the Hansa philosophy when the owners are away.  As the villa’s spiritual advisor, the manager is amazingly knowledgeable about Balinese culture and traditions, he was happy to divulge all over dinner and accompany us to a traditional Hindu ceremony in the local village.  If you’re lucky enough to stay during a full or new moon (like we did), you also get a rare opportunity to watch Hindu priests bless the property.  Staff, too, went out of their way to introduce us to daily Balinese life:  teaching us how to make traditional palm leaf offerings and Indonesian delicacies in the kitchen – activities that the children really enjoyed.

And it’s refreshing to find a villa where the owners are committed to eco-friendly practices, a healthy lifestyle and giving back to the community.  These surfing and yoga devotees support local organic farmers, practice recycling in the kitchens and insist on biodegrable household cleaning.  We also learnt about their wonderful trust fund, the Hansa Foundation, set-up to educate local children in traditional culture, arts, music and the environment.

We thought that Villa Hansa would be ideal for groups of friends and for family groups spanning a wide age range – there are bedroom configurations here to suit all.

Villa Infinity

Villa Infinity

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

The beauty of this villa is the size, (and of course the views). Everything about it is huge and it is totally geared up for large groups of people, weddings and parties, with an extensive sound system (complete with hidden speakers that extend through the garden) and a highly professional kitchen with five-star cuisine prepared by two chefs. The U-shaped sofa in the living pavilion can accommodate 22 people, while the dormitory can accommodate 12 kids or, alternatively, the same number of adult guests who need to bunk down for the night. Note: although this room is not really suitable for adults, guests at events and weddings can sleep here for an additional fee. There were just two of us staying at Infinity, so we felt a bit lost lazing by the large pool all by ourselves. Still, it is a beautiful sprawling expanse of lawn and beautiful architecture so we got over that concern pretty quickly and got into the sheer amount of space available to us by imagining the stellar events that must take place here. An early morning swim is a must, especially as the pool is the warmest we have encountered. Mornings at Infinity are also a time of spectacular beauty with birds singing and crickets chirping; you can see the volcanic backbone of Bali on the horizon and watch the farmers out in their fields tending their crops. Just stunning!

Kaba Kaba Estate

Kaba Kaba Estate

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

We’ve been lucky enough to visit a lot of beautiful villas in our time, but Kaba Kaba Estate exceeded all expectations of comfort, luxuriousness, good taste and space.  There’s so much to do on the estate itself that its out-of-town location is not an issue.  Everything has been thought of, from tennis, foosball, air hockey and all the major electronic game consoles, through to a library, gym and even a croquet lawn.  If only we’d had more time!  As it was, the pools, the spa and the spectacular home cinema were more than enough to relax and entertain us.

The staff were just the right mix of professional and friendly, and the chef is a consummate pro, delighting us with everything he presented.  Although there is a selection menu, we highly suggest that you just ‘go blind’ (like we did) and let the chef and his team surprise you with their magic.  Our simple, three-course Balinese dinner was off-the-charts delicious.

Do go for an early morning wander through the rice fields.  The locals are very friendly and the experience will be something the regular tour guides can’t give you.  The wide-open spaces are awe inspiring.

Villa Malaathina

Villa Malaathina

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

With its palatial proportions and decadent style, it’s tempting to say that we felt like royalty staying at Malaathina, but the villa is so contemporary that the term seems a little inappropriate and old-fashioned. Perhaps ‘movie stars’ is closer to the mark! We stayed alone and cheerfully lapped up the luxury, but were rather tempted to invite some friends along, because this is really a villa that deserves to be shared. With so much space and such a glamorous setting it simply begs for celebrations and events, and the atmospheric Javanese rock garden looked like an idyllic spot for a wedding ceremony.

I could easily imagine joining a high-end retreat here too – the yoga pavilion was a lovely space, and very well equipped (one of the owners is a yoga teacher – so no surprise there,) and the overall vibe, with the rice-paddy views and myriad terraces and gardens is wonderfully serene. We didn’t have a chance to enjoy the teppanyaki grill, but what a fabulous idea. When we return with a big group of friends that will be top of our list!

Villa Mandalay

Villa Mandalay

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

We’ve never seen a villa with its own pitch and putt golf range before and thought it was a tremendous addition for family fun or for allowing golfers to iron out glitches before parting with the huge green fees for the 18-hole course New Kuta Golf Club (34km).

We loved the fact that nearly all the rooms in the villa are on one level, making it very social, accessible and appropriate for all ages. And all of the bedrooms (with the exception of the lower studio room - which is slightly smaller - but very private) are very similar and won't be the cause of any group envy.

We lazed away the latter part of the day on comfy couches shaded by the funky bamboo roof of the elevated open-air living and dining deck by the pool. From here we observed the farmers ploughing and flooding the rice terraces in preparation for planting. The staff were diligently on hand with offers of snacks and drink refills to refresh us throughout these exhausting people-watching activities. At sunset we retired for a splendid Indonesian dinner in the main hall.

Taman Ahimsa

Taman Ahimsa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

If you’re looking for nightlife and shopping, Taman Ahimsa is probably not the villa for you, but if you want to retreat from the world, awaken your soul, practice yoga and meditation, eat healthy food and experience therapeutic massages, this transformative place will inspire you more than you ever imagined possible. Even if you’re not really into the spiritual concept, and you don’t understand much about chakras, mandala thankas, crystals and healing circles, you will still appreciate the beautiful close-to-nature setting, the sight and sound of the sea, the romantic architecture and the peaceful ambiance.

Although the villa promotes the holistic concept, you don’t have to be on a spiritual retreat to come here; but who knows, you might just be inspired to experience something new. The gardens and interiors are fun to explore too, in every room we found a traditional Balinese instrument, an extraordinary crystal or an antique, or a funky lamp or table. Floors and doors are made from old teak, ironwood and two-toned tamarind wood, which has been recycled from boats and old buildings. Please note the villa has a no smoking policy.

Taman Ahimsa is managed by Fivelements, a company that specialises in holistic healing retreats, centred at Puri Ahimsa, 20km away. For a truly amazing experience arrange for the villa’s driver to take you to Fivelements Puri Ahimsa for a holistic treatment performed by an authentic Balinese healer.

Villa Atas Awan

Villa Atas Awan

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

The calm and peaceful surroundings at Villa Atas Awan immediately put us at ease. Due to its remote location, the only sounds constantly present come from nature. It gave us the feeling of no-frills rural living, but with the benefit of modern comforts such as soft beds and private swimming pool. Creative types who draw inspiration from nature will love it here. It’s also ideal for a holistic or yoga retreat as the air is crisp, fresh and unpolluted.

As the property has not been childproofed and presents quite a few hazards for youngsters, it is more suited for families with older kids. That said, those who are not interested in nature or cultural exchanges with the locals may become bored quickly due to the absence of video game consoles or televisions in the living areas and guest bedrooms. Those who have difficulty with stairs may have difficulty as there are no sleeping quarters on the ground floor.

The villa opened for rental only in early 2010 but some maintenance issues were already apparent when we visited (such as a faulty telephone line). However, we were assured that everything was being repaired and looked in to.

Villa Bukit Naga

Villa Bukit Naga

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

Villa Bukit Naga is one of the most delightful villas we have seen in Bali. The architect and owners have created a real gem in total sympathy with the surroundings. Tucked away overlooking a quiet river valley some 20-minutes’ drive from Ubud, the location is nothing short of spectacular. Spread over three buildings the rooms are all superb – we particularly liked the annex room with its cute garden bathroom and private little terrace. The plunge pool attched to the visitors lodge is also very special. Every room has been beautifully thought out with nice touches but it is not a delicate museum, so families with kids need not feel on edge. The staff are also outstanding, many having worked at the villa since it opened in 2002. We found Parta, the Villa Manager, a genuine delight who could not have been more helpful. Highly recommended as much for those looking for a dignified place for a pampered celebration, as for a yoga or health retreat or an extended family holiday in a fabulous location.
