Villas in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.

The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.

Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.

The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.

Kembang Desa Villas - Villa Sunset (6BR)

Kembang Desa Villas - Villa Sunset (6BR)

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Of the four dwellings at Kembang Desa Villas this is the granddaddy family villa of them all and will definitely please the needs of any group, big or small. The views facing the ocean and the land are (almost) indescribably sublime with the power of the ocean to the front and the fecund bounty of the green rice bowl behind. We went for a long walk down the beach in the late afternoon and checked out temples and rock pools and a most glorious sunset.

When we got back to the villa a delicious meal awaited – nothing gourmet, just honest, well-prepared food. The cook produces meals from a tasty repertoire of Balinese / Indonesian / International dishes that hit the spot. The villa also has a collection of hundreds of digital movies – all without the evil scratch demon that can ruin the last five minutes of the most-engrossing films!

Make sure you wake up early in the morning when the air and sky are at their most calm and be rewarded with a mountain vista that will leave you speechless.

Villa Kendra

Villa Kendra

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

One of life’s simple pleasures is to drift off to sleep and wake up to the gorgeous smell of tuberose flowers wafting through the air, so we were thrilled to see that Villa Kendra had stocked every suite with a generous arrangement of these classic tropical flowers. Greeted by the staff with fresh watermelon juice and cool hand towels, we were immediately drawn to the pool deck; enjoying the sound of overflowing water against the busy backdrop of the neighbourhood. This villa is perfect for an extended family vacation: mum and dad can take the upstairs master bedroom with the kids in the connecting twin-bedded room, while grandparents, aunts, uncles, or teenagers will be more than happy with the Pool and Garden Suites down below. The kitchen is suitable for light self-catering such as drinks, snacks for the kids and easy meals that don’t require an oven, but the area really lends itself to eating out. After a lazy afternoon by the pool, we decided to go out for dinner and walked 400m to Hana, a small Japanese restaurant, where we tucked into a perfect bowl of ramen and sautéed salmon teriyaki. Then we slowly window-shopped our way to Bintang Supermarket to stock up on a few bits and pieces before heading back to the villa. After a big dose of ultra-hip Jalan Raya Seminyak, we really appreciated the lack of pretension and laid-back family ambiance at Villa Kendra. Next morning, even while we enjoyed our breakfast of poached eggs, whole wheat toast and fresh fruit besides the pool, we were already dreaming about the mezze platter from Zula, just down the street on Jalan Dhyana Pura. Our recommendation: don’t stay at Villa Kendra if you are weight-watching. With the excellent order-in service from Baliepicure and all these tempting treats on your doorstep, you just don’t stand a chance!

Villa Kinara

Villa Kinara

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Considering its heart-of-the-action location in Bali’s sophisticated Seminyak, it’s extraordinary just how serene life is at Villa Kinara. It also beggars belief that this villa is brand new (completed in 2012). Thoughtful design combines classic and timeless Indonesian architecture with twenty-first century luxury and convenience to create a truly delightful villa and one we felt very much at home in. It’s very hard NOT to relax here with a gorgeous garden to enjoy, refreshing pool to dive into and wide breezy balconies and terraces to stretch out on. Then there’s the very convivial pool table and bar area and the massive sofas to curl up on come evening time.

Not only did we admire the size of the bedrooms, but we thought them beautifully furnished and the bathrooms immaculate (two of them have indulgent semi-outdoor tubs). All rooms have plenty of private, comfortable sitting space, and the daybeds outside the upstairs bedrooms are equally inviting.

Although there’s a huge choice of places to eat and drink within easy reach of the villa, a chef is on hand to prepare a wide range of Indonesian and Western favourites for breakfast, lunch and dinner; just talk through your selection with him, or Theodora, Villa Kinara’s friendly and very capable manager, and the rest will be taken care of.

Although it wasn’t a problem during our visit, we thought that the staff quarters might be a bit close to the main living areas and could result some unwanted noise.

Villa Kipi

Villa Kipi

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

We found Villa Kipi to be a modern, practical villa in an excellent close-to-the-beach location. We thought that the size of the rooms and the number of indoor and outdoor living and dining areas was delightfully generous for a four-bedroom property, and even if it was filled with a group of eight guests there would still be plenty of spots for individuals to lose themselves.

This is quite a grown-up villa – possibly best suited to a group of adults - but would also work well for a family despite not being specifically family-friendly. For example, the outdoor area features an extended timber deck around the pool in place of a lawn so even though it is large there’s not a true garden for kids to run around in.

The colonial-style furnishings are lovely; the bathrooms are stylish, light and airy, and a TV in each bedroom ensures yet more privacy for folks who want to escape from their companions. Our favourite room was the open-air lounge on the upper level. We also enjoyed our time at the beach (albeit rather a scruffy section of the beach) without hawkers, touts, or overcrowding spoiling the party. And it was just a three-minute walk back to the villa for a shower and a laze beside the pool. Brilliant! At sunset we returned to the beach for a few beers at a small and popular open-air bar.

The staff at Villa Kipi are helpful and cheery and while they aren’t the most highly trained of professionals, they know how to make your holiday fun. There is a superb selection of home-cooked delights on the suggestion menu, and breakfast is really good too, especially with the sound of the crashing surf just over the way.

Villa Kodok

Villa Kodok

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

As soon as we entered Villa Kodok we felt a real sense of seclusion, serenity and privacy. And we were so impressed with the staff’s from-the-heart service. This lovely team of Balinese people stayed well out of our way but were there in an instant if we needed them. A brass bell is provided to summon them at any time.

The villa was built as a home and has been furnished with love, yet it is also stylish, practical and immaculately maintained. We were delighted to note that there is so much emphasis on children here; it’s a true family-friendly villa with every consideration given to the care, entertainment and safety of guests’ children. Even the fishpond outside the living room has a protective grill over it to deter over-curious kids. The villa has a connection with the nearby Glo Day Spa, so guests get a discount and therapists will come to the villa.

Villa Aliya - Laksmana Villas

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We have no doubt that this villa is a great place for families and for entertaining. One of the bedrooms is also dedicated to the enjoyment of children, furnished with beanbags and equipped with soft toys and games, a large, flatscreen TV,DVD player and a good selection of kids’ movies. The staff really proved their ability to look after us, accommodating all of our last minute requests with willingness, ease and big Balinese smiles. The location in Seminyak is absolutely superb, and the villa is gorgeous!

Villa Leha Leha

Villa Leha Leha

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Sanur-Ketewel

Leha Leha is meticulously maintained, and looks as good as new despite it being ten years old. Granted the kitchen has been upgraded in the last two years but the rest of the villa is tidily kept, beautifully clean and the soft furnishings flush with colour. Judging by the photographs scattered around the property this is a cherished holiday home. It is independently run by the owner with the assistance of two resident managers in charge of handling guest relations both of whom we found to be polite, knowledgeable and able to speak good English. Pickups from the airport were included in the rate, and a car with driver (one of the managers) was available to us throughout our stay (first tank of petrol free). Since there are two master bedrooms, we felt this villa would be great for two families holidaying together as well as for groups of friends or one extended family. The dual storey pavilion certainly maximised living space, although in absence of ceiling fans the upper floor lounge tended to get quite hot during the day. The villa’s proficient resident cook offers Indonesian fare – though ordering in or dining out at one of Sanur’s many restaurants increases your options. It’s also possible to arrange for an Italian chef to cook for you at the villa, but fees are quite steep ($150-200 plus grocery costs), so we felt that this option might be best saved for a special occasion; that said, he is very highly recommended in the guest book so perhaps it’s worth the extra splurge!

Lila Bamboo Villa

Lila Bamboo Villa

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

We loved the grand scale of Lila Bamboo, which allows the heart to open and take in the beauty of the place—and there is beauty everywhere, in the views, in the Asian art and antiques, and the construction details of the house itself, clearly built by hand. The natural materials and open-air ventilation create an atmosphere that is immediately relaxing and rejuvenating, and which seemed to grow deeper the longer we stayed.

As we were travelling with two teenage children, we were at first concerned that they would not have enough to entertain them, since there is no television; but they had brought their laptops (which functioned perfectly with the good WiFi connection everywhere); and immediately got into the spirit of the house. They loved their rooms, with their cabin-in-the-forest feel and huge bathrooms. We had lunch together in the large living room on their floor, which was also great for board games (we brought along our own). The children also spent a lot of time exploring the river and visiting the organic gardens of the ashram. They made friends with the cows and three Golden Retrievers. The swimming pool was a blessing for us all, so fresh at all hours of the day.

The staff were gracious and competent. The house manager, Alfian, greeted us when we arrived and checked on us often. The two Balinese women looking after the house were a bit shy of speaking English, but they seemed to know exactly what we needed at any moment. On arrival we were immediately offered a glass of fresh coconut water—a most restorative drink full of nutrients. It came from coconut palms growing on the grounds, and a pitcher was always on hand, constantly refreshed.

We had great meals during our stay—some in Ubud and some at the villa. Dinner at the massive dining table felt like being in a castle. The freelance cook was brought in with a day’s notice, which meant that a bit of menu planning was necessary, but that will still be the case when a permanent cook is hired (in the plans), since staff need time to shop for fresh produce at the local market.

The Lotus Residence

The Lotus Residence

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

When holidaying at The Lotus Residence, you just won’t want to leave the premises. We didn’t. We didn’t need to!  Everything you could possibly need for relaxation and fun are right here; swimming pools, jacuzzi, plunge pool, a yoga/pilates studio, a choice of sitting, dining and chilling spots, a fascinating working rice field within the grounds, a gorgeous spa at the bottom of the garden, and space – lots of it.

The spa was our second port of call after a dip in the swimming pool, and we spent a delightful couple of hours there having a massage, a sauna and a rain-rinsed soak in the jacuzzi. There’s an icy plunge pool for the adventurous (or foolhardy, which, according to one of us, worked in perfect tandem with the sauna. The other one of us disagreed!

And while the kitchen might not grace the pages of Vogue Interiors (it’s built for staff use but contains every appliance and condiment you could need), we’re sure that if Gordon Ramsey turned up he’d clap his hands and say, “We can work with this. Let’s get cracking.” The meals produced here – the villa operates a priced menu, but special requests are catered for – is stupendous!

If you should feel the urge to escape from this jungle paradise, there’s a fabulous golf course as well as some remote beaches within a 20-minute drive. The sea can be a bit treacherous, however - only for strong swimmers.
