Villas in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.

The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.

Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.

The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.

Villa Issi

Villa Issi

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

It was a real privilege to stay at Villa Issi, this is a gorgeous, funky, fancy pad where no expense has been spared. It’s all about space, ultra-modern architecture, more space, high-technology and super comfortable furnishings, ranging from leather chairs to beanbag-sun-loungers. The only antiquated elements at the villa are the 200-year-old frangipani trees. Beautiful! Everywhere there are walls-of-glass that open to the balmy Bali breezes. The elevated deck that bridges the swimming pool is a fabulous feature and the kitchen is a dream, we’d never before seen such a state-of-the art fridge! In fact, there are surprises at every twist and turn, including lots of places to escape to and be on your own. This is a really exciting villa to stay in.

Jagaditha

Jagaditha

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Enticing, uncomplicated and restorative; this is exactly how a beach property should be. The aesthetics of Jagaditha’s build, especially the gorgeous landscaping, felt perfectly in tune with the surroundings without cluttering or detracting from the serenity that this location brings. I loved how each bedroom enjoyed different outlooks that were equally appealing; the lily pond lapping onto three of the ground floor bedrooms was enchanting. Children especially will find lots to interest them here as there were frogs, dragonflies and fish galore, plus a flat lawn for letting off steam. A second dining area with shade-giving parasols to one side of the garden comes highly recommended for daytime dining as it beautifully overlooks the swimming pool, garden and sea and feels refreshingly informal. All outside areas come with Bose amplified sound that you can connect to your own iPod. The gym comes only with a rowing machine and a Power Plate, but if you’re feeling enthusiastic Jagaditha’s guests can use the fitness centre in the nearby Canggu Club in addition to the tennis courts, creche, restaurants and swimming pools. There’s a big staff team at Jagaditha and they do a great job. Fusion cuisine is on the menu and the chef comes recommended; we really enjoyed all of our meals.

Villa Jajaliluna

Villa Jajaliluna

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Just across the road from the prestigious resorts of The Oberoi, The Legian and The Samaya, and a brief, worse-for-wear stagger home from Bali’s best nightspots, we found Jajaliluna’s location to be superb. The beach is almost on the doorstep while restaurants, fashion boutiques and high-end retail shops are within such easy reach that our credit card companies were loving us for it. Despite being in the middle of all this downtown action, Villa Jajaliluna is a serene and quiet oasis. We spent a very nice few hours by the pool, catching up on our magazine reading from the villa’s (very) updated selection of GQ, FRV, Vogue and The Sunday Times Travel magazines. After spending the latter part of the afternoon on the beach and enjoying a sundowner or three at Ku Dé Ta, we retired to the villa, ordered home delivery of gourmet burgers from the restaurant next door, cranked up the air-conditioning and settled down for a night of cinematic heaven on the big flat-screen in the TV lounge. Tarrantino never looked so good!  We came back to Jajaliluna at the end of 2012 to find that a brand new state of the art kitchen had been added on to the side of the dining room, something which is guaranteed to make this already hyper family-friendly villa even more popular.

Villa Jamalu

Villa Jamalu

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » Jimbaran

This villa rocks! We loved our stay here – one night wasn’t enough time to sample all the facilities. There really is something for everyone: a gym; yoga space; massage room; pool lounge; PlayStation and great stereo systems and cinemas throughout. There are also plenty of spots to relax and sunbathe by the fabulously deep saltwater pool (I had to equalize when diving to the bottom of the deep end!), or snuggle up with a good book and enjoy the ocean view.

The owners of this villa obviously have kids – we know that from the name but also because this is one of the best-equipped villas for children we have seen. Apart from the PlayStation 3 there are numerous games and toys to keep them entertained – even children-sized pool cues! And a safety fence can be erected around the pool to give parents peace of mind and save them from having to double as lifeguards. And with three home cinemas, plus three more TV’s there’s never any fights for the remote!

Jamalu works for all ages, and as well as making a great family holiday villa it’s a wicked party pad; the Bose stereo system links to speakers in all the living areas and outdoor speakers by the pool and on the first floor terrace. The villa manager has been with the villa since the start, and the chef is very accomplished.

This contemporary property may not be suit those looking for a traditional Balinese experience. However all the interiors are furnished very tastefully in the best quality materials and fabrics creating a very comfortable environment.

Villa Jemma

Villa Jemma

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We loved the elegance, stylish interior design and comfort of this villa. The master bedroom has a large balcony that overhangs the garden, but we opted to sleep downstairs, where two bedrooms open out to the garden, so we were able to stumble straight out of bed and into the royal blue swimming pool. Even the sunbeds, cushions and towels follow a blue and creamy-white theme to match the pool and the Batu Yogya stone sundeck. The garden is a pleasure; beautifully landscaped with palms and frangipanis, giant leaves and a soft lawn. Another unexpectedly gorgeous space is the master bathroom; the sun streams in through the partially open roof to provide an alfresco area flanked by a well-tamed jungle of palms and greenery, with a lazy chair for relaxing.

Kaba Kaba Estate

Kaba Kaba Estate

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

We’ve been lucky enough to visit a lot of beautiful villas in our time, but Kaba Kaba Estate exceeded all expectations of comfort, luxuriousness, good taste and space.  There’s so much to do on the estate itself that its out-of-town location is not an issue.  Everything has been thought of, from tennis, foosball, air hockey and all the major electronic game consoles, through to a library, gym and even a croquet lawn.  If only we’d had more time!  As it was, the pools, the spa and the spectacular home cinema were more than enough to relax and entertain us.

The staff were just the right mix of professional and friendly, and the chef is a consummate pro, delighting us with everything he presented.  Although there is a selection menu, we highly suggest that you just ‘go blind’ (like we did) and let the chef and his team surprise you with their magic.  Our simple, three-course Balinese dinner was off-the-charts delicious.

Do go for an early morning wander through the rice fields.  The locals are very friendly and the experience will be something the regular tour guides can’t give you.  The wide-open spaces are awe inspiring.

Villa Kailasha

Villa Kailasha

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Guests booking Villa Kailasha will hopefully have spotted that it’s in a remote location so there should be no surprise on arrival: we certainly thought the villa’s setting was sublime. Long stretches of black sand and marauding surf with hardly another tourist in sight. We spent most of our time stretched out by the pool enjoying the ministrations of the staff and soaking up the ocean views, but while we were there we were privileged to witness a village ceremony when the procession passed right by the villa’s front gate. We followed the merriment and colour down to the beach and experienced a Balinese event that, for us, was priceless.

For a change of scenery, take a stroll along the small roads and into the local villages for a slice of rural life. And for something a little more sophisticated, stop by the Alila Villas Soori Resort for dinner, or at least a sunset drink. The classy surroundings are pretty special and being so remote not many people drop in, so don’t miss the opportunity while you’re in the neighbourhood. We went for the said sunset drink but ended up staying for dinner – and really rated their kitchen. While their spa would probably welcome visitors as well, it’s perhaps more tempting to ask the villa staff to organise a therapist to come and give you a treatment at ‘home’.

Villa Kakatua

Villa Kakatua

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Kakatua is a little Balinese gem, a classic Bali residence in an area where contemporary villas are popping up quicker than we can visit them. Without being absolute beachfront, Kakatua’s location is as good as it gets in Canggu (due to inflated land prices there are very few beachfront villas in this area). The well-landscaped garden is an oasis in which you can spend your days basking on the sun loungers or lying in the shade of the poolside balé, and your nights under the floodlit palm and frangipani trees. This, coupled with the candles around the garden lit by the staff each evening, makes for a very romantic backdrop to the dining balé.

Kakatua is more spacious than Villa Kedidi, it’s 3-bedroomed sister next door, but hiring both villas (they share staff and a management office) would give you enough room to comfortably sleep 14 people (probably a few more if you are holidaying with young children – after all, you can fit half a dozen small ones into the one bed at Kakatua!). We found the staff very attentive and professional.

We love staying in Canggu. It’s rapidly becoming one of the most popular areas in Bali, yet it retains a rural charm and there are still fields and rice paddies between the villas. That’s not to say it will be to everyone’s taste, as there is no shopping or nightlife here (nor any air conditioning in the open-air living areas) – you must travel into Seminyak for this. However Canggu does offer some quaint and varied dining spots along with a rugged surf beach.

Kalimaya I

Kalimaya I

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Wow! Villa Kalimaya I was a surprise from the moment we opened the gilded Balinese doors and stepped into its garden. Yes, garden!  Not a handkerchief-sized patch eaten up by a pool, as is the case in so many villas in densely built Seminyak, but a huge expanse of lawn edged with travellers palms, hibiscus and frangipani trees – big enough to lose three guest bedroom pavilions which were completely camouflaged from view!

While there are two huge living rooms and an indoor dining room within the main house, we spent most of our time idling on over-sized cushions in the large poolside pavilion, and chose to take our meals alfresco. Speaking of meals, the cook whipped up a delicious Singapore laksa for us – apparently a doddle for him as he regularly prepares gourmet dinner parties for 20; no wonder most guests forego the pleasures of the many fine restaurants within an easy walk of the villa in favour of his home cooking.

The cook, butlers and housekeepers – all charming and helpful – divide their time between all four Kalimaya villas set along the same quiet lane. We considered this a bonus as it means guests benefit from a professional team, but privacy is not compromised by their continued presence.

We appreciated that Kalimaya has been designed as a home – originally for entertaining her royal friends, the owner told us. Comfortable, well equipped and full of personal art and furniture collections, the place feels larger-than-life. This is the perfect villa for an extended family or groups of friends who want to be sociable and yet still be able to get away from each other; the bedrooms are large and designed for privacy, there are lots of different seating and dining areas, and we were still discovering discreet get-away-from-the-crowd hideaways right up to our departure.
