Beach In Ten Villas

If being near the sea is a holiday ‘must have’, but walking into your bedroom with sand between your toes isn’t, these villas are less than 10 minutes drive from the beach - many within the soothing sound of the surf. (If you have to be right on the sand then try our Beachfront villas.)

Villa Belle

Villa Belle

Thailand » Koh Samui » Plai Laem

Villa Belle catches the breeze perfectly from its hilltop position. And the views! We loved the couches on the deck – with their white cushions and low coffee table they made the perfect spot for an afternoon read over a cup of tea. The WiFi signal is good out here too, so you can catch up on emails while soaking up the sun – just watch out for ‘laptop tan’ on the thighs.

As evening arrived we were reluctant to leave the view, so chose to dine outside (pleasantly surprised that the elevation and breeze meant we weren’t pestered by mosquitos). Samui’s resorts let off fireworks most evenings, and it was as though we were being treated to our own private show. Then there are the luminous fluorescent green lights that appear on the horizon as it gets dark. At first glance it looks like alien spacecraft is coming in to land but, in fact, the lights belong to night fishing boats and are to attract squid to the surface. The villa’s attractive lighting shines at night – in both senses of the word – and our turn-down was unique with towels arranged to form of a heart and sprinkled with flowers.

Should you decide to hire a chef, there’s a comprehensive selection menu at the villa, or you can browse the recipe book of Thai dishes for even more choice. The chef prepared some pasta and a Greek salad for us, both of which were well made and tasty. Comfortable beds dressed with white linen and with a choice of foam and feather pillows, meant a peaceful sleep before our pre-breakfast swim. Khun Noom sets out an impressive Continental breakfast, and thanks to the villa’s state-of-the-art coffee machine we could enjoy cappuccinos too.

Villa Bengawan

Villa Bengawan

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

We liked Villa Bengawan straightaway. Its tranquillity and its relaxing open spaces edged by pretty lily ponds were very appealing. Each of the bedrooms is of a good and very similar size (great for groups) and all overlook the garden through floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors. We particularly loved the semi-outdoor bathrooms where you can shower or bathe right beside your own lush walled garden sprouting giant ferns, aromatic frangipani and palms. Skylights above the washbasins are also very handy for flooding in the right amount of light for applying makeup!

The lily ponds fringing the living and dining areas were very photogenic, and we loved how the pink flowers arched open widely during the day but closed tightly up again each night. The squashy sofas in the lounge were particularly comfortable and the mood of the room seemed to vary according to what was playing on the iPod. Refreshingly, there are no TVs in any of the bedrooms. Instead, you can catch up on the news or watch a movie in the air-conditioned media room to the back of the lounge.

Tufts of feathery grass between the lawn and the swimming pool provide a pleasing screen of privacy for the sun beds on the timber decking. Although the staff were present in the kitchen and around the villa as they cleaned and cooked for us, they were very discreet and tended to pop up only when we needed something – a snack or a drink perhaps. Their English is fairly basic but they did understand what we needed and we didn’t have any problems. The cook is excellent and the villa menu (groceries on guest account) is substantial enough to keep you satisfied for days.

Villa Biru Biru

Villa Biru Biru

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Nowhere else in Bali has so much been done with such little space in order to create the perfect holiday villa. We really enjoyed our stay, and as the place is so compact, there were no distractions to keep us away from the pool. Often when one stays in a bigger villa, the need to explore can distract from the immediate task at hand: that of lazing beside the pool in a state of torpor. The villa is very intimate, and the privacy is something that we enjoyed immensely. A honeymooners delight, you might say. Many other villas have a small army of staff who never leave the premises but Biru-Biru Bali, being small, has the advantage in that the housekeeper needs only come in the morning and prepare breakfast and make the beds before she clears out and leaves you to it. Time to get slap on the SPF ++ and get rid of those tan lines, people!

Blue Samui

Blue Samui

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bang Por-Nathon

There's something refreshingly independent about Blue Samui. The secluded setting is quite unusual for a fast developing island because there are no other properties surrounding the villa (bar one, a little further down the hill, which barely enters the view). This means you quickly relax into your own, private world – shoes and watch off, beachwear on. Once you've stocked the fridge at one of the island's big supermarkets, the urge to venture out fades, at least during the day. The homely atmosphere, combined with abundant on-hand facilities lets you set your own schedule and this generally involves little more than eating, lounging, reading and drifting into the view. Of course, unless you're someone that sees cooking as a leisure activity, the lack of a chef means dining out becomes part of the routine, but with a hire car there are plenty of options close by. The two on-site staff are very keen to please and will happily serve snacks and drinks so you don't have to leave you sun lounger too often. A poolside barbecue is also a must at least once during your stay. The evening light makes those breathtaking views almost surreal. Although the guest bedrooms share a bathroom, the rooms themselves are nicely furnished, spacious and the wide verandah is almost an extra lounge. The views from the nicely hidden bath tub in the master suite make bathing a special pleasure that adds to the indulgence in what, for us, was a pleasingly private and relaxing island retreat.

Villa Bugis Green Gardens - Villa Sayang

Villa Bugis Green Gardens - Villa Sayang

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

For simple three- and four-bedroom properties, Villa Bugis at Green Gardens are a true delight. In fact they are probably some of the nicest and most private villas we have stayed in within this price range. The best bit is that you get all this space and privacy, including a private swimming pool at each villa, for less than what you’d pay for the equivalent three or four bedrooms at your average hotel.

There’s plenty of room for families to spread themselves out and for the kids to let off steam. Although we didn’t have any toddlers with us, we did note that pool safety fences (not easy to find in Bali) were available for those that need them. We also thought that big groups holidaying together would find renting two or more of the neighbouring villas very convenient and convivial.

These are essentially self-catering villas, with staff on hand to take care of housekeeping and pool duties as well as preparing and serving daily breakfast. For the rest of the time we were left to languish in complete privacy (yet the team were always on call if we needed anything). We checked in for a lazy weekend and were delighted with our choice. Enjoying the pool and the lovely garden, and with music and movies for entertainment (there’s also complimentary WiFi at the villa), we didn’t feel much of a need to go out; although we did amble slowly down the lane for a few sunset drinks on the beanbags spread out along Seminyak Beach – highly recommended! If we had chosen to self-cater, the staff would have willingly taken care of our grocery shopping at no extra cost.

Villa Bugis Drupadi - Villa Alam

Villa Bugis Drupadi - Villa Alam

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Our stay at Villa Bugis Drupadi was delightfully private, highlighting that there are advantages to be had in not always being looked after by a big team of staff – no matter how discreet they are. As it was, we were left to bask in the privacy of our own splendid pool oasis.

Remarkably good use has been made of the generous space at Villa Bugis Drupadi. We particularly liked the fact that the pool doesn’t take up the entire garden, which is often the case with villas in central Seminyak, and there’s plenty of room for families to spread themselves out and for the kids to let off steam. Although we didn’t have any toddlers with us, we did note that pool safety fences (not easy to find in Bali) were available for those that need them.

We also concluded that the Drupadi Villas are in a great location if you’re looking for a place to stay that’s within easy reach of the beach and the many shops, restaurants and bars that Seminyak is famous for. It took us around ten minutes on foot to reach the main dining and shopping areas.

The villas are basically self-catering although a simple breakfast is included in the rate; just tell the staff when you want it. Alternatively, if you fancy breakfasting out, or making your own, no problem (the staff will even do your grocery shopping for you at no extra charge).

Villa Bugis Drupadi - Villa An Tan

Villa Bugis Drupadi - Villa An Tan

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We really enjoyed staying in this fabulous location. Villa An Tan is conveniently tucked away and quiet yet you can easily walk to the shops, bars and restaurants of trendy Seminyak. The staff are very discreet (perhaps too discreet for some people’s taste) but it does mean you can bask in the privacy of this splendid pool oasis. The funky seventies-style sun loungers and love seats around the pool are great – as is the giant day bed in the shade of the gazebo.

The lounge area is comfortable. We particularly enjoyed watching a movie on the large flat-screen TV with surround-sound speakers, and it was great to be able to connect our iPod to the DVD/stereo system in the bedroom as well as the lounge/dining room. The kitchens are well equipped for self-catering; I can imagine it would be fun to throw a dinner party around the square dining table or light up the barbecue in the outdoor kitchen.

Villa Bugis Drupadi - Villa Cinta

Villa Bugis Drupadi - Villa Cinta

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We felt Villa Cinta had a great location if you’re looking for something central and within walking distance of the beach and the many shops, restaurants and bars that Seminyak is famous for. It took us around ten minutes to reach the main eating and shopping areas, as well as the beach near Gado Gado. The villa is basically self-catering although a simple breakfast is included in the rate; you say when you want it and there’s no problem if you want to make your own or indeed go out elsewhere to enjoy it. You can pay extra for a cook to come and make dinner for you at the villa (24 hours notice is required); at Rp 200,000 per person, however, the Indonesian food or BBQ that they prepare might cost more than eating out. The villa also has a good information file with a list of restaurants doing takeouts. Cinta means love and this emotion was reflected in the villa’s intimate size, its privacy and the tropical garden bathrooms, however its living areas felt a little formal and therefore lacked said romance; aside from the balé beside the pool there weren’t that many cushy places to properly lounge. Seating in the TV Room was also a little limited for a full house since the rattan sofa here only seats two comfortably. The villa’s size and centrality in Seminyak makes it a good choice for couples or small groups of friends; the rates differ if you’re booking two bedrooms or three which makes it more economical too. The two twin bedrooms make it equally suitable for families; older children might enjoy the villa more as there’s not a lot of garden for young kids to let off steam. There’s free WiFi (although it doesn’t stretch to the master bedroom), iPod docks and wired sound at the villa but you’ll need to bring your own DVDs, CDs and games. There’s a good information file in the villa plus a handy map which makes up for there being no live-in staff, however security patrol the estate 24 hours a day and the helpful staff are on call around the clock.

Villa Bugis Drupadi - Villa Indah

Villa Bugis Drupadi - Villa Indah

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Despite being in a popular and busy residential area, Villa Indah was delightfully private, highlighting the advantages of not being looked after by a full-time team of staff – no matter how discreet they try to be – and allowing us to cast a few inhibitions aside and enjoy skinny-dipping in the pool whenever we wanted. It may not be the ultimate in luxury, but this villa is perfect for a family or a small group of friends who want to cook and look after themselves, (apart from the cleaning of course – it is a holiday after all!). The manager is on call should guests need a helping hand and this proved useful when the power went down in the late afternoon, but apart from that we were pretty much on our own. DVDs are available on request, and can also be purchased cheaply and easily in Bali.  On our recent re-visit (Nov 2012) it was very nice to see that the villa was still the lovely little hideaway that it was back in 2009. Some things don’t need to change.
