Samui Summit Estate - Hilltop View 4

Samui Summit Estate - Hilltop View 4

Thailand » Koh Samui » Choeng Mon

When we arrived at Hilltop View 4, we were as impressed as any child would be at having our own cinema with individual seat controls, and a pool that twinkles with different coloured lights at night. We also felt a curious childhood urge to play hide and seek! There’s such an abundance of perfect hiding spots amongst the many rooms, levels and alcoves here. And as our feet dangled from the huge chairs in the exceptionally high-ceilinged living room, we knew exactly what Alice must have felt like after she sipped the ‘drink me’ potion in Wonderland!

But there are few that wouldn’t be impressed by this villa. Its spectacular views don’t even fade with the sunset, when village lights, a green glow from the squid fishing boats, fireworks from the beach resorts, or perhaps a distant tropical storm light up the sky.

Hilltop View 4 is a true party pad. The kitchen is well set up for events, and there’s a second staff kitchen big enough for a team of chefs. Of course the central music system and mood lighting adds to the perfect party atmosphere, as do the three bars and pool deck. Lavish bedrooms offer solitude and tranquillity when needed and we felt that, with so many levels and living spaces, at no point would guests feel on top of each other, even if the villa was full.

When we felt the need to pay for our over-indulgence at one of the many excellent local seafood restaurants, a friendly game of tennis (racket and ball hire available at the office) at the estate’s shared court, or a walk down to the beach – and back – did the trick.

We enjoyed delicious breakfasts prepared by the resident housekeeper, but if you would like a private chef to prepare other meals at the villa, this can easily be arranged for a reasonable fee plus provisions charged at cost (plus 15% service). Khun Pee, the villa manager, will gladly help you arrange a chef and can take care of many other concierge services too, be it an in-house massage or a boat trip to one of Samui’s outlying islands.

Shiva Samui Resort - Baan Sarika

Shiva Samui Resort - Baan Sarika

Thailand » Koh Samui » Laem Set

If you worry that staying in a gated community means dealing with intrusive neighbours and beating them to the sun beds in the morning, think again. As soon as you close the front door at Baan Sarika you're in a private, exclusive world and free to relax in your own space, surrounded by tropical extravagance. The decor may be a little magniloquent for a beach villa, but at least you never forget you're in Thailand and once you slip on your bathers and flop into the pool, you quickly get used to feeling like a royal guest.

A team of staff take care of the entire estate, and as a guest at Baan Sarika you enjoy VIP treatment (although you can stipulate the amount of attention you receive!). Mealtimes are almost as much of a pleasure as the down time in between, most of which is easily spent doing very little in a horizontal pose.

When you yearn for life's simple pleasures, you can wander along the quiet beach to watch the fishermen bring in their catch or just gaze over the calm waters to the small islands on the horizon. Although you share the beach with other guests and residents, this part of the island never feels crowded and local island life continues around you undisturbed. This is the kind of villa that inspires a long, satisfied sigh.

Villa Sipo

Villa Sipo

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

If, like us, you enjoy being close to the action but also being able to withdraw to a peaceful haven when the mood strikes, then Villa Sipo is the place for you. Quietly and securely situated within the Sentosa Villa estate, and yet only minutes away from Bali’s most fashionable playground, we definitely enjoyed the best of both worlds here. This is a sociable, easy-to-live-in villa. We found ourselves comfortably spread out, with the teenagers lazing on loungers by the main pool, dads reading the newspaper over a coffee at the breakfast bar or catching up on the news in the study/TV room, mum’s reading up on shopping options under the garden balé but all still very much together and enjoying the villa equally.

The well-equipped kitchen is incredibly enticing so, despite the talents of the villa chef (who sensibly suggested we order our meals a day-ahead and leave him to go out and buy the groceries with a cash float from us to cover the cost), you may find yourself tempted to go shopping at one of a handful of nearby deli’s (Bali deli, Grocer & Grind or The Bali Catering Co deli) and do it yourself (with someone else to wash the dishes of course) – at least for one or two nights during your stay.

The staff are ever smiling and ready to serve whilst also being discreetly unobtrusive which was also a big plus for us. We imagine that with everything Sipo has to offer, both within the villa and on its doorstep, it will get many repeat guests.

Siri Mendira - Villa Angsoka

Siri Mendira - Villa Angsoka

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Candidasa

Our stay at Villa Angsoka was imbued with a sense of smugness, this was a villa to be proud of! The views are mesmerising, holding us captive for hours at a time. Nature is generous here, using the sky and ocean as her canvas; treating us to misty pink-hued mornings, brilliant blue afternoon skies with low slung clouds bopping over the horizon, and views over the rocky hulk of neighbouring island, Penida, and the shadowy silhouette of Lombok in the distance. Dreamy days gently slipped by, with little to think about except whether to have pancakes or eggs for breakfast; swim in the ocean or the pool; take a trip to the beach, or stay at the villa. While built on a grand scale, the owners designed Angsoka with harmony and comfort in mind, creating a highly liveable space which is luxurious without being over the top. The collection of Indonesian curios and antiques is more homely than museum-like in nature, while simple sofas and chairs in all-weather rattan, suit the tropical beach location. We enjoyed watching local life unfurl around us, with fishermen heading off in their colourful jukung (fishing boats) or net fishing in the shallows, while easy strolls down the shady lane revealed cows meandering through the coconut groves and kids playing soccer. While there was no direct view of the sunset, dusk was still a beautiful time, bathing the villa and the ocean in a soft pink glow, and we always looked forward to the staff lighting the decorative fires at either end of the pool, punctuating the night sky with flames.

The Tamarind

The Tamarind

Thailand » Pattaya » Sattahip District

As soon as we were whisked away from Bangkok airport by the villa driver on our two-hour journey to The Tamarind, we knew we were in good hands. Turning into the flamboyant tree-lined driveway of the Buraran Estate we totally got into the privacy vibe of the place and relished the fact that this enormous empty estate was virtually all ours.

Dining was an absolute treat and we looked forward to each meal like lions at the only watering hole for miles. The staff, being Thai, certainly know how to cook this (in our opinion) most tantalising cuisine the world has ever seen. That said, they still throw together a mean pasta, and an even better English breakfast, and will serve it up anywhere you like. We breakfasted by the pool, lunched by the lake and ate nibbles and sipped champagne on the rooftop Sunset lounge.

Each bedroom is a themed adventure to another country, and together they have been designed to cater to all combinations and permutations of guests. We slept in the Africa room, surrounded by leopard prints and animal skins which made us feel like we were on safari. We were lucky enough to spend four days here and were never at a loss for things to do. We swam in the pool, went for walks around the estate, played tennis, billiards and petanque and spent many hours reading, watching the huge TV, eating or just being horizontal in the myriad places provided for just such a position.

The villa driver is on call for 10 hours a day (at a very reasonable charge) so do take advantage of the service to get out and see the local area. We had a great time sightseeing, including an outing to observe some of the infamous ‘netherworld’ tourism that Thailand is famous for.

Note: Guests at The Tamarind can also use the facilities of the adjacent Buraran Clubhouse (unless already occupied) with its two tennis courts, 16 x 9.5m swimming pool, additional 9m kids’ pool, and seminar room with drop-down screen projector and WiFi. There are six bedrooms here, which can be rented by the room to accommodate any overflow of guests at The Tamarind, up to a total of 12.

Villa Tanju Bali

Villa Tanju Bali

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Staying at Tanju is a wonderful experience. The journey from airport to villa took us past some delightfully scenic rice terraces and through typical Balinese villages, keeping the beach hidden until the last moment when the road opens up to reveal a stunning panorama. Honeymooners and romance seekers will feel the magic: floating petals in a sunken bath; walks on the beach or snuggling up on a daybed to watch the sunset, this is your private patch of paradise. With plenty of space and ample creature comforts to keep everyone happy, Tanju will equally captivate families. We found that life slipped easily into a blissful rhythm: a morning walk on the beach (with stunning views to Bali’s majestic Mount Agung volcano) before a breakfast of fresh tropical fruits or a cooked selection of our choice; pool time until a relaxed lunch, then a siesta before more pool time or, for the energetic, a game of tennis at the villa or golf at the world class Nirwana course fifteen minutes’ drive away. Then it was time for drinks to accompany the daily sunset spectacular, then showers and the ritual application of after sun as we waited for the call of the dinner gong. Fresh grilled fish and seafood, wonderful spicy Asian salads and soups, all simply, deliciously prepared and presented. Children drift upstairs to doze in front of a DVD while adults sit chatting to the sound of the waves before another night of peaceful sleep, happy in the knowledge that tomorrow heralds another perfect Bali day.

Villa Tantangan

Villa Tantangan

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

As a child I always dreamed of living in a beach house; sleeping to the hypnotic sound of waves crashing on the shore and waking to more of the same, and at Villa Tantangan the dream briefly came true. Early each morning we would follow the garden path leading to an ornate Balinese door shrouded in foliage that opens onto the deserted beach. Here, black sand glints in the sun and the wide bay is littered with driftwood and coconut husks. Towards the end of the beach the banks of the Yeh Penyet river gives way to the ocean, and the revered sea temple, Pura Gede Luhur Batungaus, which rises from the dark craggy rocks. Taking a different garden path led us through a wild natural garden filled with pink hibiscus, banana trees and bamboo groves to a small temple, and beyond the Tantangan river.

We really liked the eco design features which were attractive as well as being smart! The gardens on top of the flat roofs helped the buildings blend with their surroundings, and you can forget any notion of ‘eco friendly’ equalling rustic; it was more a case of an undercurrent of luxury enhancing an outdoor experience. We enjoyed panoramic sea views from the bed and from our sunken bath tub, and we loved the aptly named infinity pool which truly had infinite views stretching across the ocean to the horizon The well-equipped kitchen also deserves a mention, because, as an avid cook, it was another dream come true: in fact it was so appealing that we sent the chef home so we could enjoy the experience of ocean-view cooking – it was an absolute pleasure.

Note: The approach road can be a little bumpy in places, but passes through beautiful rural scenery which, to our minds, just added to the enchantment. Guests wishing to make use of the complimentary car and driver during their stay can also walk a few minutes down the beach and get picked up on the main road to Nyanyi, should they prefer. .

The View

The View

Thailand » Koh Samui » Taling Ngam

Although only two of us visited the View, we could appreciate just how ideal this villa would be for group holidays and special celebrations – it really is designed for entertaining. Villa manager, Khun Opal, and her assistant, Khun Nokkie, as well as several other unobtrusive staff, keep the villa immaculate and cater to guests’ every whim, including arranging parties.

We arrived late afternoon and were welcomed with refreshing homemade lemonade. We didn’t have to wait long to witness Taling Ngam’s famous sunset – with Khun Opal’s signature cocktails as the cherry on the top. We gave the chef carte blanche at dinnertime, our only requirement being that the meal was vegetarian. He served a vegetarian Thai green curry with steamed rice, sesame seeds and pumpkin, and deep-fried tofu with a tamarind sauce. Both dishes were beautifully presented and delicious, with just the right amount of spice.

As Tech-junkies, we enjoyed this Mac-happy villa. Not only is there an iMac computer for guest use, but this also controls the entertainment centre, from the music that’s piped throughout the villa and garden, to the Apple TV with over 700 movies and the iPod with over 4,000 songs to select. We could sync our own iPads, and MacBooks with the system too. It was such a tough choice whether to watch a movie on the indoor living room projector, the outside lounge projector, or even on the lawn near the beach, that we gave up and decided to take advantage of the blissful peace and quiet and catch up on some reading instead!

We woke to cheerful birdsong and, with the touch of a bedside button, remote-controlled blinds let in the morning light and the endless sea views. Energised on return from our early morning walk along the villa’s virtually private beach, the smell of freshly baked croissants and coffee lured us to the dining room where we enjoyed a breakfast accompanied by views of the Five Islands.

We only wish we’d had more time to take full advantage of the View’s amazing facilities: kayaking around the bay, a friendly game of croquet on the lawn, an invigorating muay Thai lesson with a personal trainer, or a cooking lesson with the chef. We could only imagine how much a child would enjoy exploring this villa –especially with its dedicated children’s wing – although we did discover that with the automated blinds down at night and the reading spotlight on, you’ve got the perfect backdrop for a shadow puppet show!
