Villa San

Villa San

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

To be this close to the centre of vibrant Ubud but be surrounded by so much space, peace and comfort is a rare treat. Returning to the sanctuary of Villa San’s impressively long lap pool, lovely lawn and big comfy bedrooms and bathrooms after a hard day’s shopping or sight-seeing in and around Ubud was a delight. We were royally looked after by the lovely staff, who were keen to make sure that we enjoyed our stay and equally keen to share their knowledge of the area and the culture and customs of this lovely part of the island.

The master suite gets top marks for luxury, comfort and sheer quality. There are no TVs in the bedrooms (they get points for that, from us) but there are excellent TV/DVD/music systems in the two entertainment rooms and a smaller set, plus electronic games console , in the playroom. Bring your own DVDs though, as the owner’s collection is pretty small. Ditto iPods for the docks in every bedroom.

The villa is well-equipped for young children and extended families with three twin-bedded rooms and a great playroom. Having all the accommodation on one level is also be a big plus for guests that have trouble with steps.

The cool shady balé at the top end of the swimming pool is big enough to seat everyone, even where there’s a full house, and with Bose speakers installed in the rafters it makes the perfect place to chill out, enjoy the tropical scene and thank your lucky stars that you are staying at Villa San.

Oh yes, and we couldn’t help but imagine what an absolutely lovely place Villa San would be – marquee on the lawn, glass of Champagne in the hand, music drifting through the balmy evening air – for a casual wedding reception or other special celebration!

Sanur Residence

Sanur Residence

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Sanur-Ketewel

Sanur Residence is very modern in design, simply furnished but very comfortable. Although the houses may not have the rustic ambiance of traditional Balinese villas, they make excellent beachside holiday homes. To us it looked as though each house is owned by a different member of the same family so has taken on a different personality within ostensibly the same frame. The middle house (House Two) has mature furnishings and an older feel with some interesting art and sculptures. At the other end of the spectrum is House Three – young and vibrant with pink and grey soft furnishings in the lounge, bright art on the walls, and a private media room. House One falls somewhere in between. That said all the bedrooms are large and very comfortable (especially the master suites) and have huge modern, very practical terrazzo-finished bathrooms. Each house has perfectly acceptable facilities including TVs, cable and DVDs throughout, and good common spaces. The house kitchens are small - just service or snack kitchens, the bulk of the cooking is done in the staff kitchen and delivered to the house. We thought it odd that ther is no obvious place for communal dining except for in the rather formal meeting room. The staff did say, however, that they are happy to set up tables out on the lawns, which we can imagine would be great for a barbecue.

Villa Sapna

Villa Sapna

Thailand » Phuket » Cape Yamu

Villa Sapna really bowled us over with its amazing east-coast setting and sublime design.  Every sense-pleasing thing we could dream of in a tropical holiday villa was to be found here: sunrise views, sunset views, sea views … yes!  Add to that captivating paintings by celebrated Asian artists, modern architecture with a touch of Thai elegance, vibrant living areas that fully open to lush gardens, a 20-metre swimming pool, and attentive staff.  And a gym.  And a private chef who creates heavenly Thai tastes.  And for ease of access, a lift.  It’s hard to describe how uplifting it feels to be here, the quality of the tropical light and the vivid skies and the total serenity – just book it and see for yourself!

We also thought that, with its balance of bedrooms and living rooms arranged across two separate pavilions, the villa’s layout was ideal for extended families or two families seeking added privacy.  We’re also partial to the Cape Yamu area of Phuket as we prefer to avoid the tourist crowds.  Though it’s becoming something of an enclave for ultra-luxury villas and resorts, much of the area is still swathed in native jungle and plantations, with fishing and farming the main activities of the local people.

Villa Seascape

Villa Seascape

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Lembongan

Wow. Wow. WOWWWWWWW. How can it get better than this? Stunning setting, check. Direct access onto the beach, check. Achingly chic interiors, yep. Fabulous ocean views, you bet. We had been expecting a beach-vibe villa, but not on this scale.  Seascape simply dazzles!

We drooled over every inch of this beautiful beachfront home. There were so many magical moments:  lying by the pool watching the rollers crashing against the limestone headland (or the calm sea – it changed daily); enjoying a ringside seat at the fire-pit as fireworks lit the sky over Mushroom Bay; lingering over a candle-lit dinner prepared by Dimas the excellent villa chef — do try his piquant salsa salad presented in a taco bowl — and served by the unflappable butler Yami.

We really like the away-from-it-all, turn-back-the-clock feel of Nusa Lembongan and consider it a refreshing change from the busyness of mainland Bali. Given the layout and bed configuration, Seascape would be the perfect place for an extended family. And we think fun-loving, design-conscious groups of friends will love the choice of indoor and outdoor living space. (Larger parties of say 20 people could rent Seascape together with Villa Voyage a hop and skip along the beach.)

Seascape has everything going for it; it was a pleasure to be among its first guests, and we found ourselves planning a return trip before the sun set on our very first day.

Villa Semarapura

Villa Semarapura

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Although there’s no doubt it's a visually striking villa, Semarapura’s luxurious functionality seemed to unravel itself slowly so that the more we experienced, the more it drew us in. As we relaxed in one of the sea-view balés, swum in our (huge) private pool, sipped drinks from our own bar (sat on one of the ‘wet seats’ at sunset – wow!), enjoyed the pampering of the friendly and personable (17-strong) staff team and the comforts of our well-facilitated bedroom, we realised what a great villa it was as it appeared to cater not only excellently for group arrangements but also individuals within a group too; everything has been thought of and there are plenty of private places as well as sociable spots. The pool deck and its adjoining media room was very congenial; you can either watch a movie here ‘en famille’ or select one from the library to watch in your own room ‘à deux’, as every bedroom has a TV. Note that the bedroom TVs can only play DVDs and are not connected to cable channels. It’s no wonder that the villa is a very popular place for weddings and other special events; not only is the location idyllic, but the experience and hotel-like approach of the staff clearly shows through too. The food was good at the villa and the kitchen a delight; if we had mustered up the energy to cook for ourselves, it would have been plain sailing as the kitchen was equipped with everything that we might have needed. As it was, the villa’s suggestion menu listed a range of dishes and we only had to pay for the cost of the ingredients (plus 20% handling fee which is subject to service charge and government tax) so it was much more fun to sit back with a cocktail from the bar until long after sunset whilst someone else rustled up something delicious to eat. The dining room was atmospheric; however it could do with a ceiling fan as well as the air conditioning option so you can comfortably have all the doors open. The villa’s out-of-the-way location could be a good or bad thing depending upon your preference, however we liked the unspoilt coastline and thought that the fact that the villa had its own car (to sweep us into Seminyak for example) really made up for this. For the active, there’s also a shared tennis court and a rowing machine.

Seseh Beach Villa II

Seseh Beach Villa II

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

We had a great stay in Seseh Beach Villa II and found everything to be nigh on perfect with all the modern comforts of home mixed with all the lazy pleasures of a tropical holiday.  It was incredibly peaceful and quiet with lots of sunshine and swimming by day, while by night we enjoyed big-screen movie sessions, long leisurely dinners and the sounds of the waves lulling us to sleep in our super-soft beds.

After spending much of the day beside the pool, sunset proved to be the best time to head down to the beach for a wander along the sands and a paddle in the surf.  There are no lifeguards here and the water can be a bit rough, so swimming is not recommended.

In the evenings, it was fun to gather around our own private bar for a pre-dinner drink.  The chef here is a very talented man, and the Balinese and Indonesian specialties that came out of his kitchen were superb.  Getting out of our incredibly comfortable bed in the morning was made easy in the knowledge that a hearty breakfast would soon be on the table.
