Villa Maridadi

Villa Maridadi

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

It’s hard to imagine a more perfect villa for families with older children, groups of friends or business partners, plenty of space and opportunity to enjoy meals and shared social times whilst being able to retreat to a terrace or garden daybed to read a book or enjoy a massage. You won’t be falling over each other on this manicured estate. Maridadi is also a spectacular backdrop for weddings, dinner parties, barbecues or sunset cocktails. Highly recommended is an evening cultural dance and music performance arranged by the villa staff, who can also prepare the famous Balinese Babi Guling (roast suckling pig) to make it an authentic Bali evening.

We particularly enjoyed long beach walks with ever-changing views – from wonderful villages with traditional outrigger fishing boats to stunning rice terraces, surfers and ceremonies. There is nothing nicer than returning from a long walk or bike ride to a pre-arranged massage or treatment selected from a menu at the villa (extra charge). Children of all ages invariably end up turning the front lawn into a football, rugby or cricket pitch and will find a variety of picnic spots, like the wooden rice barn, to add to their holiday fun.

The villa is a little off the beaten track with the nearest restaurants and shops 12 -14km away however with such a varied and expertly executed menu, and staff who will venture forth to purchase anything you wish for, we found this was of little consequence. If you do want to get out and about, the villa comes with a car and driver (petrol is charged).

When you have morning views over rice terraces and volcanoes, sunsets over sea temples and breaking surf, sublime comfort, superb cuisine and pampering staff there’s not much else to wish for.

Villa Nandana

Villa Nandana

Thailand » Phuket » Natai Beach

With such a magnificent setting on the beachfront at Natai, Villa Nandana had us hooked even before we stepped across its threshold. And yet, we were bowled over again once we had a peek inside. The pitch-roofed living room with its aura of a fine summer palace, the master suite with its lavish double bathtub enveloped in marble, the inviting pool perched near the seafront – simply, wow!

With its balance of shared spaces and ultra-private bedrooms, Nandana is a fabulous retreat for families or groups of friends. Those looking for a more transformative holiday will find that the villa facilities are perfect for designing your own wellness retreat. We could have even arranged for a personal trainer, yoga teacher or spa therapist to come to the villa and work us into fit and fighting shape had the mood taken us. But the sea-view pool, a good book to curl up with on the comfy living room sofas, and toes-in-the-sand beach walks were enough of a body and mind recovery for this family!

It’s a magical feeling to return from a long, leisurely stroll and see that the only footprints on the sand are ours. With Phuket Island getting more crowded with each passing year, we’re happy to know that such a spacious, peaceful and elegant escape can be reached within an hour of touching down at the airport. Paradise found!

Villa Napalai

Villa Napalai

Thailand » Phuket » Surin

If there was ever a villa built to lift your spirits, Villa Napalai is it. Upon entering Napalai, we were most struck by its vibrancy – so many bright colours in every room – and the stark beauty of its sheer-white chic terrace contrasting with the vivid blue of the pool, sea and sky. Then, in addition to its cheering tones, Napalai is laden with fun facilities for all ages, so many in fact that we were sadly unable to try them all on our brief stay!  Spoiled for choice, we decided to skip the gym and spa and opted for swimming and relaxing poolside, plus spending a lot of time in the games and play rooms. Our kids, six and eight, loved frolicking in the playroom, though most of the toys and plastic slide were better suited to toddler-aged children. The pool table in the games room saw a lot of fierce competition, too. Overall, we felt that Napalai, which means “a place in heaven”, offered a lot of choice and space to satisfy guests wishing for a peaceful place to lazily unwind in the tropics as well as those seeking a fun, active holiday.

At the time of our visit (June 2013), Villa Napalai was new to the rental market and as such the service was a tad spasmodic at times. The staff seemed more preoccupied about getting logistics right than anticipating their guests’ needs. However, since we were among the first guests to visit we expect these issues to be ironed out as the team gains more experience under the guidance of the professional management company that operates the villa.

The villas within the estate are quite close together, and the terrace of the villa next door comes into partial view from Napalai’s pool terrace. However, since Napalai is at the end of the road, it benefits from having only one nextdoor neighbour and an unobstructed view towards the hills to the north.

Villa Nautilus

Villa Nautilus

Thailand » Phuket » Ao Po

With its huge windows and bright open plan, Nautilus has an easy elegance that made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. Not that we weren’t dazzled by the spectacular views across Phang Nga Bay, too! It’s a villa ideal for a family holiday of play and rest, with its 20-metre pool extending across the front making it easy for us to relax inside in the comfy living area while keeping an eye on the kids splashing around. We loved having the delightful dilemma of whether to dine inside at the stately dining table or out on the terrace, with superb views to enjoy either way. And the food did not disappoint, with the chef preparing a delicious medley of Thai dishes including spicy steamed sea bass and Penang chicken curry that even our picky pre-teen was keen to try. Staying on the lesser-travelled east coast of Phuket may not be to everyone’s taste, but we love it here! Ao Po with its mangrove-fringed coastline and rural landscapes is one of our favourite areas of the island, with a still-undiscovered feel about it. And anyone keen to hop aboard a boat or kayak will find Nautilus to be a handy base for their sea exploration.

Nirwana Golf Villas - Ocean and Golf

Nirwana Golf Villas - Ocean and Golf

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Even though you’re almost on the fairway of one of Asia’s best golf courses, you don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy a stay at this villa. Private homes with beachfront locations are not in abundance on Bali’s south-west coast, which makes Ocean and Golf a particularly good find as well as being good value. There are few better spots to enjoy the famous Bali sunsets than from this villa’s breezy balcony.

Ocean and Golf incorporates the best of both worlds; a quiet and private residence which, for an additional daily fee per person, also has access to leisure facilities at the neighbouring 5-star resort – you can even order room service (although you do have your own cook who prepare meals from a suggestion menu charging only the cost of ingredients plus 20% service charge). However for guests who want to venture out to experience the shopping, restaurants and nightlife in town, this villa is a little remote (Seminyak, the popular entertainment hub, lies 23km south). We enjoyed walking around the sprawling grounds and whizzing from the villa to the hotel lobby in our golf buggy. The view of Tanah Lot temple from Cendana, one of the award-winning restaurants at the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali resort, is magnificent – especially at sunset.

Ocean and Golf is an ideal base for a group of golfers or a golfer who wants to bring the family along. It is sensible for seniors – there are two downstairs bedrooms if steps are difficult to navigate. Whilst there is a twin bedroom for children upstairs and plenty of TV’s to go around. As long as they don’t wander onto the fairway, it is a very safe environment for kids, and the complimentary facilities at the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali  resort will keep children busy for weeks.
