Suralai

Suralai

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bo Phut

Villa Suralai is an exquisite villa. The views are superb – each of the bedrooms has full-length glass doors and excellent terraces. The swimming pool is fantastic (despite some minor calcification) with comfy sun loungers and the gazebo is a great place to relax and escape the heat of the day. The finish and thought which have gone into the villa makes it one of the best on Koh Samui although it would be nice to see a bit more colour and homely warm in the décor. During our stay, the villa manager was charming, knowledgeable and helpful to the extreme, more than making up for the simple English of the other staff. The chef turned out some awesome Thai meals and we understand he can produce a reasonable selection of western dishes too – do mention how hot you like your food though, Thais do like their spices! (Note the management company have a team of chefs so they do rotate a bit, all the chefs we used were excellent.) Don’t bother with shopping and provisioning – let the chef do it, you will pay 30% for the handling cost plus a government tax but it keeps you out of the supermarket which has to be a good thing while on holiday. An excellent villa for a group or family (see surprises), a superb party or wedding pad or perfect for a corporate retreat.

Villa Suriyawatta

Villa Suriyawatta

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Weligama

Suriyawatta has immediate appeal:  the location of the pool is amazing, the sea views stunning and Duminda’s cooking heightened our appreciation even more.   Relaxation comes easy here – evident from the wide lounging ledge in the pool, the comfy loungers, the cushioned daybeds and the shelves bursting with novels (both English and French, spanning all genres and eras, along with an eye-catching number of architecture and design tomes).

With three twin bedrooms, kids’ chairs, pool inflatables, garden games, a swing, and babysitters-on-call, this is an excellent villa for families (it sleeps 6 adults and four kids), and the fence between the upper and lower lawn (and the pool) provides peace of mind. Groups of friends will find the Sonos sound system wired to the pool area particularly appealing.

The excellent staff team is very professional, finding the right balance between being attentive and discreet. Great food comes out of the kitchen (and there’s a big suggestion menu), the stewards are there before you know what you need and the manager keeps everything shipshape. Distractions are well hidden; the main living room does have a TV and DVD player, but it is inside an antique cabinet. The kitchen is slightly separate from the house yet easily accessible and well equipped.

Surya Damai

Surya Damai

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

Surya Damai was built primarily for the owner’s use and it is clear that they appreciate quality and simple sophistication. There is nothing pretentious, flashy or overdone here. By contrast the villa exudes calm confidence throughout, casually elegant, everything from the colours, furniture, artwork and gardens all fit together effortlessly and draw you deeper into its welcome embrace the longer you stay.

If you want to get away from it all, relax and unwind in the blissful knowledge that nothing is too much to ask of the well-trained staff, then this is you. Meals, massages, knowledge of tracks through rice fields to the beach, shopping or making restaurant reservations for dinner are all taken in smiling stride, and if you must connect with the outside world wireless internet and satellite television are available. There is plenty of space for all, relax on a lounger or read a book on a comfortable day bed while children splash in the pool, play on the lawn or wear themselves out on the tennis court.

A flick through the guest book confirmed our feeling that the experience regularly surpassed expectations and the hardest part for many guests is saying good bye and returning to the real world.

Uma Nina

Uma Nina

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » Jimbaran

There is something very easygoing about Villa Uma Nina, and we thought this must have been down to its serene situation and its beautiful presentation both indoors and out; we felt at home the moment we stepped inside.

Uma Nina is a great family villa; the garden is almost flat, despite the property’s hilltop location, so it’s great for children of all ages; there’s also a slide for the swimming pool, not to mention tortoises in the pond, which kids will absolutely adore. A sand petanque pitch at the bottom of the garden and games such as croquet provide further entertainment.

Rooms in the main house are equally sized and come with their own private balconies or verandas making the villa good for friends and couples sharing. The upstairs bedrooms and rooftop terrace, were the absolute best for gazing at the views of harbour and sea. Stone stools and petrified wood seats might not encourage you to stay seated up here for too long, but they look great and, along with many other natural furnishings and fittings, provide the villa with plenty of character.

Service was generally good and the manager was very attentive. We enjoyed the meals prepared for us by the villa cook, though if you wish to self-cater the kitchen is well-equipped for it. Alternatively, take advantage of the villa car and driver and go out to eat in Jimbaran.

Umah Daun

Umah Daun

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

Seriously spacious, perfectly configured and delightfully uncluttered, Umah Daun was an absolute pleasure to stay in.  The gentle curves of the building mimic the contours of the rice terraces, and the ponds that wrap around the ground floor, coupled with the glass doors that fold right back, made us feel like we were part of the scene rather than just looking at it.

Villas of this size can be a little austere and overwhelming, but there is enough colour in the décor and verdant landscape at Umah Daun to make it feel warm and intimate.  Our favourite design feature was the beautifully carved antique door shutters coloured in shades of teal and turquoise, which make stunning features on the white walls, as well as lovely bed heads in the childrens’ rooms.  Bedrooms are large and very comfortable and there are plenty of daybeds and sofas piled high with plump cushions that provide comfortable vantage points for soaking up the views and the peaceful ambiance.  It is such a lovely space, and the staff took such good care of us, that we didn’t really feel the need to go anywhere, but it was good to know that both the beach and Seminyak were easy to reach should we fancy a sunset walk or a meal out.

Victoria

Victoria

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Talpe

As soon as we crossed the serene lotus pond into the house, Victoria’s tranquillity was obvious. The villa was built to exhibit the character of a traditional Sri Lankan home and although only 15 years old, it is still quite a few years older than many of its neighbouring villas. However, we felt that its classical build, elegant decor and pretty palm-dotted lawn made it feel timeless, whilst up-to-date facilities – movie room, iPod docking station – combined with the vivid blue colour scheme added necessary contemporary touches. The experienced staff also added to the enjoyment of our stay. They went about their work discreetly and we were impressed by their attention to small details, such as remembering how we took our tea and which foods we did and didn’t like. The cook was very amenable and able to cook a wide variety of cuisines – from typical Sri Lankan meals to Thai and Chinese dishes – with ease. The food was not only good but economical and the kitchen is also very well equipped for self-caterers . Each of Victoria’s bedrooms offers plenty of comfort although there’s only one with direct sea views. None of the rooms in the house is air conditioned except for the TV Room, which made watching a movie much more comfortableThe pool in the garden is a real treat and although not especially big, it more than makes up for the lack of sea swimming possibilities just beyond the villa wall.

Villa Bunga Wangi

Villa Bunga Wangi

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

To quote Sadi, "A garden is a delight to the eye and a solace for the soul." Here at Bunga Wangi there is inspiration and beauty at every turn; the early morning sunlight glinting on the golden birds of paradise, the fallen frangipani scattered along the stone paths, the late afternoon shadows dancing across palm fronds. The garden is an endless source of wonder, and makes me yearn to do something creative - actually I take hundreds of close-up photos of flowers. We loved the meandering pathways, the constant trickle of running water, the pool fringed with tropical foliage and the intricate detail in everything, from the stone statues to the elaborate floral carvings in the furniture and doors.

We happily made allowances for the dated design, faded furnishings and occasional hints of must – this was part of the rustic charm and authenticated the Balinese experience. But this villa won’t be everyone’s cup of tea: there is nothing sleek or sophisticated here, no contemporary edges or gadgets (apart from iPod docks and satellite TV), this villa is like your favourite old jumper, perhaps a little tatty around the edges but warm, cosy and a perfect fit.
