Villa Capung

Villa Capung

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

Villa Capung is refreshingly unpretentious, the kind of place where you walk in, promptly collapse on the sofa and immediately feel right at home (if only home had views like this!). While the villa is not huge, the views of pristine hills and the expanse of Indian Ocean that spread before you create a seemingly endless sense of space, and the villa has been cleverly designed to maximise options for privacy. The master suite is gigantic, while the second bedroom has its own private deck as does the garden suite.

The owners spend quite a bit of time here, and have struck a perfect balance between elegance and comfort: this very popular villa feels well loved and lived in. Enjoying the views from the infinity pool was a definite highlight, especially in the soft late-afternoon light, which deepens the colours of the leafy foliage in the garden. However, Capung really comes into its own in the evening when dark amber lamps cast a seductive glow over the living room, accentuating the crimson furnishings.  Spotlights illuminate the palms and lotus pond, and the lights of Bali twinkle like a fairyland far below. There is a wonderful heady sensation of being so high up, and the villa seems remarkably good value considering these million dollar views.

The staff are efficient and kind, immediately on hand if we needed something, but entirely unobtrusive the rest of the time, and we loved that they can mix cocktails!

Villa Cendrawasih

Villa Cendrawasih

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

This is a very classy contemporary-styled villa that truly represents luxurious modern Bali living, and fits perfectly into its fashionable neighbourhood. Villa Cendrawasih was only three months old at the time of our visit (August 2013) and we were very impressed by the high quality of its fixtures, fittings and furnishings. It’s a 900m walk from Jalan Petitenget’s shops and restaurants but only 400m from the beach. We liked the fact that the huge living and dining room could either be open to the pool and garden or closed off and air-conditioned, something that many villas don’t offer their guests: while visitors from colder lands might relish Bali’s balmy nights, those less enthused by an equatorial climate may not, so it’s nice to have the option.

We can recommend heading down to the beach (along the secret passageway) for sunset drinks – a Bali ritual for residents and visitors alike. Not only is it very relaxing but it’s also a great way to meet and have a chat with fellow holidaymakers.

The Chalina Estate

The Chalina Estate

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Ever woken up to find yourself facing a giant postcard? Well it happened to us at Chalina Estate this morning. Having left the master suite curtains open, we awoke to rice fields and coconut trees of the deepest green against a backdrop of blue sky and mountains, all neatly framed by wide glass doors. Wish-you-were-here picture perfect and not a bad way to start a day.

And it just got better and better. We had a leisurely breakfast of perfectly cooked eggs and too much coffee before eventually relocating to the sun beds beside the pool to bake in the sun, read books, swim and be waited on by the butlers: and hardly a man-made noise to be heard all day, unless you count the clink of ice cubes in an empty glass anticipating a refill.

Villa Champuhan

Villa Champuhan

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

There is nothing like the hum of the rainforest and the rush of flowing water to lull you into a state of utter serenity, and our stay at Villa Champuhan left us glowing with wellbeing. We loved the raw beauty of the tropical setting, enjoyed from the comfort of a modern, thoughtfully designed living space; taking a rain shower on the private deck above the river in the first master bedroom was sheer bliss! During the day the sliding glass doors were wide open, creating a sense of open-plan living, but were conveniently shut at night time to keep out any lingering tropical bugs. The villa was so big that it was like having a mini resort all to ourselves, and our explorations revealed plenty of spaces to nestle in privacy or mingle in comfort. Staff seemed a little shy, (the villa had only just opened when we visited in February 2012), but the warmth and kindness we experienced was genuine and the service discreet, just the way we like it! On site manager, Gun,proved to be a wealth of knowledge on the area, while Dewi cooked us up a great Balinese curry. Lazy afternoons filled with flittering butterflies were spent lounging in the sun-drenched pool overlooking the river – which was so wide that we never felt encroached upon by the surrounding rainforest. Huge daybeds and couches provided ample comfort, and even the dining chairs were soft and plump. Lounging aside there was lots to keep us busy, with river banks and gardens to discover, (some of the gardens slope steeply to the river, so young children will need to be kept an eye on) and the charms of rural Bali on our doorstep. The villa was such a peaceful sanctuary that we didn’t feel overly compelled to leave, but we liked having a complimentary driver on hand, just in case.

Claughton House

Claughton House

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Dickwella

Without doubt, this is one of Sri Lanka’s most engaging villas and in one of the most breathtaking locations on the island – the views are nothing short of spectacular. Its links to Geoffrey Bawa and its interesting, yet short, history makes a stay here all the more engaging. The house itself is fairly modest – there are no fancy mod cons and the simple yet imaginative design evokes the past as much as the present – however the new owners are currently upgrading the house. The interiors have already been given a sensitive facelift, and look lovely, whilst two more bedrooms and a TV lounge are due to be completed by the end of 2014; they were renovating existing buildings for these behind the main house at the time of our visit (March 2014) but we were not disturbed by the work at all.

Our favourite place to pass the time was around the main swimming pool (there is a second pool to the side of the property, close to the driveway). This cliff-top pool complements the house – it’s been here for a few decades and we liked its old-school geometric design. The different shades of blue reflected the sea beyond and the terrace surrounding it was scattered with sun loungers and beanbags, one of which was placed on a protruding corner from where we could sit and watch surfers in the bay below. A little staircase leads down the hillside to the beach, and it’s a lovely spot for long strolls, swimming or body boarding (there’s a big collection of boards in the house) with care for much of the year – the sea is fairly shallow.

The staff really went out of their way to ensure that we had everything we needed, in particular the lovely chef who produced some heart-warming food. We recommend his rice and curry, which we enjoyed by candlelight down by the pool. Make sure you have a chat to the maintenance manager who’s worked at the house from the very beginning. He showed us some 25-year-old photos of the house.
