Mullion Cove

Mullion Cove

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

We found Mullion Cove a refreshing change from many of the villas of this grade we've inspected on Koh Samui, some of which feel a little impersonal or built-to-rent. The cool white decor and homely furnishings here reminded us of a more traditional European style, but with a light, bright and energetic feel that suits the tropics. Because the garden is constantly in the sun, the glass-fronted living room and the bedrooms do get rather warm, but the air conditioning and closed bedroom curtains cooled things down and once we acclimatized, it was just as pleasant to stay outside from breakfast until sunset, switching between the pool, sun beds and sala. Although the master suite in the main pavilion is an extravagant affair, we chose the front bedroom pavilion as it was closer to the trees with its own private terrace. Waking up to the sound of the birds and flinging open the curtains to soak in the panoramic sea views more than made up for any lack of beach.

Mullion Cove lets you mix your holiday pleasures with ease. If you tire of the sun you can retreat to the lounge to catch up on films and books, constantly within reach of a tasty snack or cold drink. There's even an intercom in the kitchen to call the maid if she's not within sight and she's happy to help prepare meals beyond the included breakfast if you choose not to hire a chef. Bo Phut is perhaps Samui's least spoilt beachside village, so trips down the hill are a treat, especially to eat out and enjoy the beachside ambience. It's an easy drive, but you have to be careful at night because there are few lights on the road that leads to the villa. If you're sharing with family and friends, you probably won't venture out much as Mullion Cove is a fabulous place to relax and escape from the world.

One Waterfall Bay

One Waterfall Bay

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

We found One Waterfall Bay to be a standout villa on many fronts.  The sheer size and decadence of its rooms – especially its upper-floor master suite, featuring not one but two home theatres and even two WCs in its huge private bathroom – is one of the most lavish we’ve come across.  With a mini-fridge and private balcony to boot, we wouldn’t expect couples lucky enough to claim this suite to see much of their fellow guests during their stay!  Every room is furnished and finished to the highest quality, from the polished wood floors to the sparkling stainless-steel kitchen to the marble bathrooms.

Service is also outstanding.  Though the on-site staff may not be very fluent in English, they’re very keen to assist and each meal we enjoyed during our stay was delicious and presented with panache.  If there’s any trouble communicating, an English-speaking guest relations manager is just a phone call away.  Though we didn’t avail ourselves of the driver and his minivan on our visit, this is a terrific perk since very few private villas in Phuket include this service.

We loved that this is a real all-weather villa, with plenty to keep guests happy come rain or shine.  Though it lacks a garden, the villa’s large pool and jacuzzi, set on a wide terrace, offer plenty of space and comfy furniture for enjoying the tropical setting.  Sipping a morning coffee on the terrace and watching dozens of birds darting amongst the trees of  the lush headland jungle; occasionally swooping in for a quick fly-by splash in the pool, is a sight we won’t soon forget!  Nestling into the sofas in the home cinema was another treat. All in all, we felt very spoiled throughout our visit at One Waterfall Bay.  Our only regret was running out of time to try a massage treatment in the spa room.

Villa Oost Indies

Villa Oost Indies

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

With its lush tropical gardens and vintage design, Villa Oost Indies provides a breath of fresh air in Seminyak – both literally and metaphorically.  Recent years have seen land prices soar in this vibrant neighbourhood, so newer villas tend to have little or no garden.  They also tend to be quite modern and minimalist in style, so it’s lovely to have the chance to stay somewhere that is so unashamedly colonial in design.  We liked the sense of space created by a generous lawn and found the courtyard gardens totally enchanting with their sprawling pandanus palms, leafy ferns and palm trees grafted with purple orchids.

We always love exploring Seminyak, and checking out all the new restaurants and bars, so the location was perfect – and so close to the beach too!   Yet we equally liked being able to escape to such a peaceful haven.  The spacious bedrooms, with their sitting rooms and beautiful bathrooms, added to the sense of getting away from it all, and definitely make up for the smallish living room pavilion.  While we don’t have kids, we could see how conducive Oost Indies is to families, with plenty of space for kids to play, and convenient sofa beds in the sitting rooms, which can sleep a child.  The option of twin beds in the third bedroom also no doubt comes in handy.

The staff are wonderful and were a definite highlight of our stay at Villa Oost Indies.  Their traditional welcome and the sense of warmth and inclusion perfectly fits the colonial style of the villa.  We felt more like honoured guests than paying customers and nothing was too much trouble.

Panacea Retreat - Avasara Residence

Panacea Retreat - Avasara Residence

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

From the moment we arrived at Avasara Residence and were greeted by warm smiles, welcome drink, cool towel and garland of flowers, we began to unwind.  We particularly enjoyed our daily yoga session with an experienced teacher, who knew our individual strengths and limits right away – a great perk! Although we were already feeling pretty relaxed by now, our massages were the icing on the cake!

The kitchen team really know their stuff at Panacea Retreat.  The dishes we ordered from the a la carte menu were fresh, with an emphasis on quality ingredients and there was a good selection of meat, seafood, poultry, vegetarian and healthy options, as well as local favourites.  Meals other than breakfast are prepared in the estate’s professional kitchen, and special orders, eg barbecues, can be discussed with your villa host.  Breakfast is no simple affair, with the chef’s baking skills in evidence once again.  We recommend the freshly made yoghurt pots, with granola and fruit puree, and some avocado, smoked salmon, cold cuts or cheese to accompany your toast … or perhaps a full cooked breakfast if you have room?  Throughout the day, freshly brewed coffee and pots of tea were on offer, with the chef’s biscotti and cookies to keep us sustained until our next delicious meal.

The villa’s layout meant that we found it easy to both come together as a group, or retreat to the calmness of our bedrooms if we wanted some quiet time.  High-pressure rain showers were most enjoyable to freshen up before dinner, and guests in the master suite can also enjoy the luxury of a deep terrazzo bathtub.  We found the staff to be attentive, always there when we wanted a drink, yet unobtrusive, allowing us to enjoy the luxuries and surroundings of the villa undisturbed.
