Tawantok Beach Villas – Villa 1

Tawantok Beach Villas – Villa 1

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

We particularly enjoyed the sense of space at the Tawantok Beach Villas created by the open walkways, skylights and uncluttered décor. Big groups won’t feel as though they’re on top of each other as there’s more than enough space between the lounge area, abundant pool loungers, the dining sala, and the master suite’s own private lounge.

We experienced the villa as a family. The staff were most accommodating, and it’s obvious they love having children as guests. We enjoyed the villa’s outdoor activities including a paddle in the kayaks and a game of volleyball on the beach (there’s a net set up). The tennis court is private, shared only with neighbouring Tawantok Beach Villa 2, which means that’s there’s no long waiting list to play, and the staff can even arrange a tennis coach (advance notice required). We had a long walk on the beach to build up an appetite before dinner, and this highlighted the villa’s ideal location for those seeking peace and tranquillity, but without being completely isolated. The beach is clean, and as we walked along we passed local children swimming and playing in the sand, fishermen setting out their nets and even a sunset wedding – very popular on Lipa Noi Beach. There aren’t any troublesome beach vendors along here, but there are a few resorts and restaurants if you want to stop for a drink along the way. Even better, enjoy sun-downers, as we did, lounging by the villa pool, taking in Lipa Noi’s famous sunset.

We chose our dinner from the villa’s suggestion menu and enjoyed both Thai and Western dishes – salad, pasta and a vegetarian red curry, followed by a fresh fruit platter. What a treat to come back to a perfectly prepared meal after a long walk and a sunset swim!

Villa Bougainvillea

Villa Bougainvillea

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Bougainvillea truly is an escape from the world at large. From the discreet driveway to the lush river banks surrounding the villa, we had a sense of being hidden away in a very private home, and this feeling continued once we were settled in, with each bedroom being screened from the rest of the villa by the tropical gardens. Whilst we appreciated this sense of escape we also quickly realised that the villa’s spacious living pavilion overlooking the pool was a great social hub and enjoyed lazing on the daybeds or sitting for leisurely meals at the solid wood dining table, being looked after by the friendly villa staff. The pool was definitely the focal point of our stay: its setting, between the steep stairs to the living pavilion and the river below the pool’s own infinity edge, under a canopy of colourful local trees, gave a wonderful sense of drama. It was easy to spend hours literally soaking in the calm tranquillity of Bougainvillea.

Any feeling of isolation is, however, only a clever illusion as the villa is a mere two to three kilometres from the increasingly popular beaches of Berawa and Pererenan where there is also a growing number of restaurants. Bougainvillea is also one of eight private villas which make up the Pangi River Village complex so multi-villa rentals would make this an ideal location for larger groups (see location section for links to the other villas). The Staff were very efficient and helpful and happy to arrange anything from shopping for groceries to massages or tours. If you require a car and driver, however, this is charged extra and you need to plan ahead.

Villa Coco Groove

Villa Coco Groove

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Coco Groove boasts chic, minimalist tropical living in a spacious garden setting. We found the villa to be very peaceful considering it’s situation in a compact residential area, near to Seminyak’s restaurant and shopping districts. The grassed coconut grove and large swimming pool provided an attractive focal point for our days of relaxation and we agreed that the vast gardens (a rarity for villas in this sought-after area), make Coco Groove a great place for functions and parties, or for families with kids who need lots of space to let of steam. Really, this villa is suitable for all age groups and offers exceptional value for money.

The villa is a fabulous blend of old and new. We particularly liked the Sarawak theme in the lounge; the back wall is adorned with baby carriers, masks, parang knives, oars and blowpipes of ethnic groups from the Borneo region, such as the Dayak, Iban and Orang Ulu. You can read all about them in a number of the books found in a small, but eclectic library in the master bedroom. Whilst the TV lounge is functional, the small screen and limited seating engineers it more towards a reading room or study (there are no TVs in the bedrooms either).

We found the staff (total seven) professional, friendly and speak good English. They live out, however hours are flexible depending on your needs, and with three security guards there is always someone on hand. Babysitters and masseurs are available on request at additional charge. The chef excelled in all the meals he prepared for us. You can choose from an extensive suggestion menu and the staff will do the provisioning (a small charge is made to cover petrol). A well-thought-out information book informs you of the day-to-day operations of the villa and recommends day trips which can be arranged by the staff, whilst also giving great advice on local attractions.

Villa Kavya

Villa Kavya

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Kavya's clever design encouraged us to divide our time equally between the various spaces on offer. It was as pleasant reclining on the wide sofa looking out over the lawn as it was lying on a sunbed by the pool, swinging in the hammock with a book, or retreating to the cool of the TV room to watch a movie. After enjoying our first delicious lunch so much, mealtimes became something to look forward to. The chef applied every one of his 15 years of resort and cruise ship experience to cook up a storm and with everything from local specialties to Italian and fusion food on the suggestion menu, it was as if Seminyak's best chefs had all been invited to make a guest appearance. Despite the slick, minimalist design we found Villa Kavya easily met our practical needs and families would certainly enjoy all the facilities on offer, as would a group of young hip urbanites on a party weekend. The wide, central lawn is large enough to throw a frisbee, have a picnic on or even pitch awnings for a garden party and when it rained briefly the aroma of cut grass evoked memories of bygone summers. The three on-site staff were discreet yet available, which left us free to choose our favourite places and diversions during the day, coming together at mealtimes around the square dining table. After dinner, appetites appeased, the TV addicts slipped off to the TV room, the rest of us happy to recline, chat and enjoy the balmy Balinese evening.

Villa Tukad Pangi

Villa Tukad Pangi

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

This villa is chic and contemporary in style, whilst also oozing Balinese charm in its design and landscaping – the best of both worlds. The owner has obviously brought in top architects, landscape and interior designers to help realise his dream. The riverside location is enchanting, perhaps a little out of the way for some but well worth the extra few minutes travel time.

Villa Tukad Pangi is very private and peaceful and perfect for a retreat – both romantic or for a small group. The villa is a great base for families with older children, but it’s not ideal for the very young as there are no railings separating the veranda from a drop to the riverside. It is not perfect for seniors either as the pools could be difficult to get in and out of, and there are several steps down to the lower level.

There are plenty of spots to relax, read a book or watch a movie, so groups would not get on top of each other when the villa is at full capacity. It’s a fabulous place for a cocktail or dinner party with the pools and garden lit up romantically at night. The kitchen is fit to cater for a banquet … and the chef will happily oblige. We enjoyed some excellent meals at Villa Tukad Pangi and the team of amiable staff were amongst the best we have experienced in Bali. A stay at Villa Tukad Pangi is akin to having a five-star retreat all to yourself, and comes highly recommended. It was nice to be greeted by the same familiar faces when we came back to the villa after three years. Nothing has changed in this sleepy rural riverside locale except perhaps the trees getting a little taller. Still such a beautiful retreat and one we were happy to return to. The rate now includes a car and driver for eight hours a day (excluding petrol), which makes the villa’s remote location less of an issue.

Villa Voyage

Villa Voyage

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Lembongan

This Robinson-Crusoe-meets-Roberto-Cavalli villa is sensational! Not usually prone to hyperbole, we consider it nigh on impossible not to be bowled over by the entire ‘barefoot luxury’ Villa Voyage experience. From the moment we caught sight of the dramatic sea vista beyond the living room, we were completely hooked. We lazed on sun loungers and beanbags by the pool, enjoyed siestas on the mezzanine bedroom balcony, and slumbered within the “I had a farm in Africa” tent bed, soothed by the pounding surf. The staff looked after us brilliantly, serving us a delicious breakfast every morning in the beachfront gazebo, and a three-course candle-lit dinner (tenderloin steak for him, sea bass for me) accompanied by the best chips in Bali! (Ingredients – which are charged to guests at cost plus a 30% shopping fee - are boated in from the mainland fresh every day, so we were asked to make our menu selection ideally 48 hours in advance).

This is a place that doesn’t do things by halves; all the design details have been painstakingly thought through, right down to the place mats and napkins (different for each meal – what perfection!). We loved the ‘voyage’ theme – the exotic travel books, the safari-style furniture. Every inch of the villa is a rich sensory pleasure, packed with surprises and with no part overlooked…like the antique daybed in the shadows of a sacred tree by the villa temple and the gate to the beach

We could have happily stayed put at the pool, so deeply relaxing is the Voyage experience! But the villa’s open-sided van, and jukung (outrigger) encouraged us out of our indolence, and we loved exploring the island – next time we’ll make a point of diving with the manta rays! We also dipped into the beach club next door for a tasty lunch, and strolled along the cliff tops – Dream Beach is only ten minutes away, and the restaurants of Mushroom Bay not much further.

Would we return to Villa Voyage? In a heartbeat! We felt so privileged to be among its first guests, and think that, once word gets out, this tropical island hideaway is going to get booked solid – by families and groups of friends.
