Gastronomic Delights Villas

Food, glorious food! Hot sausage and mustard! Cold Jelly and custard! Perhaps not quite, but these villas have been specially selected for their exceptional chef, marvellous menus, cookery courses or other culinary specialties. No Oliver, or Olivia for that matter, will be going hungry here.

The Headland Villa 3

The Headland Villa 3

Thailand » Koh Samui » Taling Ngam

You'd be hard pressed to find a more romantic spot than The Headland Villas. The sunsets are unbelievable and the design definitely lends itself to love, with special touches like the private bathroom courtyard and sliding wooden shutters outside the bedrooms for added privacy. Even if you bring the kids or share with friends you can easily escape to your own space (upstairs in the TV room, for example while the kids are in the pool).

For those craving company and variety, being virtually inside the grounds of a luxury resort means the options for dining and entertainment are far more diverse than you would expect in such a secluded location. The cool, white decor and uncluttered interiors not only show off your sun tan, but also mean you don't worry too much about drifting between the pool, terrace and fridge in your beach gear. The staff keep a low profile and are 'on-call' rather than 'in-situ' for most of the time (although extra hands can be brought in, as needed, at extra cost), so you're left to do your thing in satisfied peace.

Being part of a small estate also gives you the option of hiring more than one of The Headland Villas for a family gathering or celebration. Once ensconced in your own, however, you neither see nor hear your neighbours unless you invite them over (this is a great location for sunset cocktails). It's quite rare, even on Samui, to find such modern comforts so close to unspoilt nature and traditional island life. The combination of the two makes for a memorable holiday indeed.

Since our initial visit three years ago, the Headland Villas have flourished and now blend even more naturally into their surroundings as the gardens have become more established. The properties have been well-maintained, with little evidence of wear-and-tear.

The Iman Villa

The Iman Villa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Brand new at the time of our visit in March 2015, The Iman Villa was positively gleaming with its shiny new appliances and we had great fun with the electric blinds and discovering the joys of Apple TV.  The flat white buildings reminded us of Greece, but instead of overlooking the Aegean, we were afloat in a sea of verdant rice fields.  Low garden walls topped in pink bougainvillea make for an endless blue sky and views that go on forever. The gracefully terraced lawns mimic the adjacent rice fields and created the feeling of being very much a part of the natural environment, whether floating in the pool or lying on the bed of the master bedroom, looking through the spotless windows.

We found the staff highly professional, wonderfully friendly and always happy for a chat, while meals were so fabulous that we wanted to kidnap the chef!  With a background in fine dining restaurants and cruise ships, and a true love for the art of cooking, every meal exceeded our expectations.  We didn’t try the Brazilian barbecue, but have no doubt that is excellent, and we feel utterly compelled to recommend the quesadillas, grilled red snapper and the sublime chocolate volcano cake.

Finally, we loved the sense of getting away from it all, even though, in reality we weren’t really so far away at all.

Inasia

Inasia

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Although there were only four of us (and two kids) staying at villa Inasia, we were struck by the benefits the villa had to offer to larger groups of friends and extended families. Even when full, everyone could have their own space and privacy but still gather socially around one of the pools or in one of the many living and dining areas. Having the beach so close kept the kids entertained and the flawless sunsets were a major plus come cocktail hour. The villa's attentive staff made sure we were well taken care of and the chef's delicious Thai food is definitely worth taking a journey through the menu for. Although the architecture is quite modern and clinical, the setting more than compensates in terms of tropical atmosphere. In many ways Inasia is a classic example of the appeal of a private villa over a hotel, offering everything you would expect from the latter, but with the added bonus of exclusivity.
