Sensible For Seniors Villas

Not great on stairs or need lifts, ramps and bathrooms for wheelchairs? Asia is not famous for catering for travellers with mobility issues. These villas at least try. If you do need more help though do contact us and we will do what we can.

Pandawa Cliff Estate - Villa Marie

Pandawa Cliff Estate - Villa Marie

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

What a lovely villa for families with kids! This struck us as soon as we stepped onto Villa Marie’s ironwood sundeck framing the large swimming pool. Small kids will love the huge shallow section conveniently located alongside the living pavilion, and parents will appreciate being able to keep an eye on them from practically every room while blissing out on the ocean vistas and the privacy of two separate master bedroom pavilions on either side of the pool.

We think this would be a great villa for six couples too. In addition to the two master suites, the four equally large bedrooms in the two-storey sleeping block each enjoy privacy as well as a small deck or balcony and fabulous bathroom, and the two twin rooms can also be configured as kings; so no short straw to be drawn here! We did notice that neither of the two dining tables had enough room for 12 guests, but have a feeling the highly efficient management team will be onto that pretty speedily. The fabulous facilities of the adjoining Pandawa Cliff Estate sports centre and spa provides an alternative source of entertainment at your doorstep. Air-conditioned squash, anyone? Doubles tennis? (There’s even an umpire’s chair to keep the competitive spirit in check). And a five-minute drive in your complimentary car will take you to Pandawa Beach where you can swim, snorkel and kayak in the shallow, reef-protected waters.

Pandawa Cliff Estate - Villa Markisa

Pandawa Cliff Estate - Villa Markisa

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

We felt on top of the world staying at Villa Markisa – the view is sensational and the sheer amount of space a luxury.  The master suite is just magnificent – even the bathtub commands a killer view!  And with its private garden and pool – the villa has three in total – we could cheerfully have holed up here and never enjoyed the rest of the villa.  No wonder this is dubbed the Bridal Suite for those getting hitched here!

The cliff-edge pavilion was another favourite spot; in the early morning we could see as far as Nusa Penida on the horizon, and we had a bird’s eye view of the activities on Pandawa Beach far below.

We’ve never come across a villa that gives guests such privacy and space for all five bedrooms.  The layout perhaps takes some getting used to, as living areas are divided individually.  But that makes it perfect for those who like to holiday together while also enjoying their own personal space (and there’s always the option to open up the living and dining areas in the guest pavilion for a shared experience).  And of course Villa Markisa is an outstanding wedding venue.  With its multiple living spaces and three pools, a crowd could easily get lost here… and then there’s the estate’s sports centre and spa too!

Villa Markisa’s staff is drawn from the 45+ team that serves Pandawa Cliff Estate under the direction of hospitality supremo Diego Pons.  Bayu and Cita, our assigned butlers, looked after us well while never being intrusive.  And we became huge fans of Chef Wayan who served us some wonderful meals – make sure you try his tom yum soup and prawn curry!  (Though there are three kitchenettes, the main kitchen isn’t set up for guest use so this isn’t for people who like to pitch in and cook together on vacation.  But with such an accomplished chef, and a varied and reasonably priced menu to choose from, that’s hardly a problem.)

Pandawa Cliff Estate - The Pala

Pandawa Cliff Estate - The Pala

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

The jaw-dropping ocean views and sheer amount of space make The Pala a party villa par excellence; hands down, it’s going to be am amazing wedding venue. We loved the choice of living spaces spilling out onto terraces and balconies on both levels – all with sublime sea views. And the master bedroom was quite astonishing – with what has to be one of the best views in Bali; ocean, beach, cliffs and the island of Nusa Penida looming on the horizon.

Six couples could holiday together in complete harmony (and sublime comfort) here, as there are lots of different spaces to get together as well as quiet corners to escape from the crowd. And while there might be some initial discussion over who gets the magnificent master bedroom, the five guestrooms are so spacious and comfortable that no one’s going to complain!  (Parents take note – the bursting-at-the-seams-with-toys playroom, media games room, and large shallow pool adjoining the main one make The Pala an excellent venue for multiple-family vacations too).

Pala is the Indonesian word for nutmeg – a spice once so coveted that countries crossed oceans and went to war for it. What an apposite name for a delicious villa that will surely spice up any vacation.

Panorama Summit

Panorama Summit

Thailand » Koh Samui » Choeng Mon

A line from The Carpenters’ song: “I’m on the top of the world, looking down on creation” pops into my mind as I lie on a sun lounger by the pool at Panorama Summit. Yet although we’re almost in the clouds, it’s only a short (but admittedly steep) drive to the village and pristine beach below. Nothing obscures the view here – even the hedges of white bougainvillea are perfectly trimmed to knee-height so you look over the pretty blossoms, past the coconut plantations, to the glistening temples and beyond to the sailboats in the bay.

And the view doesn’t fade with the sunset. At night you can see the village lights, a green glow from the squid fishing boats, fireworks from the beach resorts and, if you’re as lucky as we were, spectacular flashes of ‘dry lightning’. One of our favourite places to enjoy the view was from the front edge of the infinity pool, perhaps not ideal for those who suffer from vertigo though.

When we felt the need to pay for our over-indulgence at one of the many excellent local seafood restaurants, a friendly game of tennis (racket and ball hire available at the office) at the estate’s shared court, or a walk down to the beach – and back – did the trick.

We enjoyed delicious continental breakfasts prepared by the resident housekeeper, but if you want a cooked breakfast (or a private chef to prepare any other meal), this can easily be arranged for a reasonable fee plus provisions charged at cost plus 15%. Khun Pee, the villa manager, will gladly help you arrange a chef and can take care of many other concierge services too, be it an in-house massage or a boat trip to one of Samui’s outlying islands.

Villa Puri Nirwana

Villa Puri Nirwana

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Sanur-Ketewel

Six years on from the original review, we enjoyed a delightful stay at Puri Nirwana. It was a pleasure to find such a quiet part of Bali’s coast completely untouched by the crowds, even in high season. The location is spectacular, and the views from the villa attention-grabbing throughout the day.

We had the beach to ourselves apart from a lone fisherman, and enjoyed walking along the beach-front promenade, to Pura Masceti, one of Bali’s nine sacred directional temples. The sunrises over Cucukan Beach are sensational, and we were mesmerised by the island and mountain views.

The villa is large and the staff are very friendly, full of smiles; the chef, who had worked at Ubud culinary icon Mosaic, prepared some beautifully presented meals for us. Puri Nirwana is well designed to accommodate large family groups — it is possibly the best place on Bali to bring someone with mobility issues — and the stunning spa pavilion is the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely massage.

Villa Pushpapuri

Villa Pushpapuri

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Sanur-Ketewel

You cannot fail to enjoy Villa Pushpapuri – we certainly did during our stay. The staff were very helpful, the food was good and the setting superb. It was a real treat to be able to see and hear the sea from almost everywhere - by the fabulous swimming pool, at dinner (inside or out) or from most of the bedrooms. We also really enjoyed retiring to the underground bar in the evening for a beer and game of pool. The villa is only a few years old (2006) but the quality of finish is excellent and the maintenance first class which it has to be given its exposed coastal location. The gardens are a delight and the bright interiors very enjoyable. Villa Pushpapuri would make an excellent choice for families as there is a load to do.

Villa Samadhana

Villa Samadhana

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Sanur-Ketewel

The first thing we noticed on entering Villa Samadhana was the wide open space, rarely seen these days in the more popular tourist centres of Bali. The kids ran a good 70m sprint from the entrance up to the living area, across manicured lawns and past flowering trees. Being a family of four, we had our choice of three separate sleeping pavilions but, as our youngest still wakes in the night, we opted for the master suite so we could be close together. With a king-size bed in the sleeping chamber and upholstered couches in the adjoining sitting room, the kids were excited about sleeping in an unconventional, yet comfortable space – especially with access to their own 32-inch flat-screen television.

The owners obviously love to spend quality family time here and the poolside pavilion is a well thought out covered area that provides unlimited opportunities for action, relaxation and play for the entire group. With a 25m lap pool, generously sized shallow area for toddlers, inflatable pool toys and four umbrella-shaded sun loungers, this was our ‘go to’ spot each day after breakfast.

The butler and his attendants soon realised that our small, low maintenance group didn’t require them at our beck and call all day and discretely left us to our own devices until we needed them. However, the villa’s extensive amenities and big team of full time staff are perfect for large groups and special events such as weddings. And chef Wayan is a magician in the kitchen. He and his team took care of the grocery shopping before our arrival, based on our selections from the vast menu emailed to us. As a first night surprise for the kids we’d ordered ice cream sundaes and banana splits - the perfect treat before watching a family movie in the air-conditioned media room.

The Pabean Beach area serves up a refreshing slice of unhurried Balinese life. Our daily strolls to the beach provided glimpses of an authentic village lifestyle: local children laughing and playing on the glittering, black-sand beach, elderly men chatting beneath their shady roadside shelters and ibu (mothers) skilfully wielding long, skinny sticks to knock down frangipani blossoms for daily prayer offerings.

Villa San

Villa San

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

To be this close to the centre of vibrant Ubud but be surrounded by so much space, peace and comfort is a rare treat. Returning to the sanctuary of Villa San’s impressively long lap pool, lovely lawn and big comfy bedrooms and bathrooms after a hard day’s shopping or sight-seeing in and around Ubud was a delight. We were royally looked after by the lovely staff, who were keen to make sure that we enjoyed our stay and equally keen to share their knowledge of the area and the culture and customs of this lovely part of the island.

The master suite gets top marks for luxury, comfort and sheer quality. There are no TVs in the bedrooms (they get points for that, from us) but there are excellent TV/DVD/music systems in the two entertainment rooms and a smaller set, plus electronic games console , in the playroom. Bring your own DVDs though, as the owner’s collection is pretty small. Ditto iPods for the docks in every bedroom.

The villa is well-equipped for young children and extended families with three twin-bedded rooms and a great playroom. Having all the accommodation on one level is also be a big plus for guests that have trouble with steps.

The cool shady balé at the top end of the swimming pool is big enough to seat everyone, even where there’s a full house, and with Bose speakers installed in the rafters it makes the perfect place to chill out, enjoy the tropical scene and thank your lucky stars that you are staying at Villa San.

Oh yes, and we couldn’t help but imagine what an absolutely lovely place Villa San would be – marquee on the lawn, glass of Champagne in the hand, music drifting through the balmy evening air – for a casual wedding reception or other special celebration!
