Sensible For Seniors Villas

Not great on stairs or need lifts, ramps and bathrooms for wheelchairs? Asia is not famous for catering for travellers with mobility issues. These villas at least try. If you do need more help though do contact us and we will do what we can.

Villa Waimarie

Villa Waimarie

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Waimarie is one of the most homely villas we have inspected. It’s incredibly well thought out for families, with absolutely loads to do even on a rainy day (heaven forbid). What really struck us as sensible is that all the day-time lounging areas make the most of the beach and views, whilst the bedrooms are set behind in lovely mature gardens which provide more privacy. The bedrooms are so practical for families – connecting rooms, twin with kings, but each still having a huge bathroom. Perhaps the connecting door could be a bit more sound-proofed.

The baths are huge enough to take five or six kids (or two adults) with ease. Use the shower every other day to appease your environmentally-aware conscience. The common areas are excellent – a little well used in places but not in a frustrating way. There are loads of places to curl up in with a good book but also keep an eye on proceedings. Home away from home is a much overused term but we think this is very applicable for Waimarie. Warm, friendly, secure and incredibly homely.

Walatta House

Walatta House

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Tangalle

This is one of those fabulous finds you really want to keep for yourself.  We loved Walatta House – from its eco-chic concept to its beautiful ocean views and tranquil hillside location – and no sooner had we arrived than we were working out when we could come back again with friends.  The design is simple and the size manageable, even for two people, and the house is furnished with an eye-catching collection of design-orientated furnishings and fittings – the bulb installation above the dining table caught our eye.

The 20m swimming pool is a treat for long leisurely swims, and the air-conditioned TV room is a top addition as it provides the perfect snug for watching movies (bring your own) or catching up on the news and sports.  There’s a desk and computer here too.  We wandered down to the pretty beach, but currents can be strong so the staff advised us to head for Seenimodera Beach (over the hillside, and accessed via road) if we wanted to swim or jog as the beach here stretches for a few kilometres.

There’s a small staff team at Walatta House, including a chef who also acts as the manager.  Having worked in various Middle Eastern countries he specialises in Middle Eastern / Arabian food, however you won’t find it on the menu, so if you fancy some hummus or tabbouleh, make a special request.  The kitchen is not located within the house (there is a little pantry with drinks cooler, coffee machine and tea making facilities) but is adjacent to the main building, and can be used by guests.

Villa Waru

Villa Waru

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua

Its safe environment, spacious garden and loads of different living spaces make Villa Waru an absolute dream for large families. The garden is truly enchanting; full of little artistic touches; secreted statues, brightly painted doorways, timber carvings and stone gargoyles. Adventurous kids will love these surroundings and there’s plenty to keep them amused inside too; big TVs, DVDs, pool table, foosball table, board games etc. For parents’ extra peace of mind, a lifeguard can even attend at the villa (extra charge).

With such a generous scattering of living and dining space, everyone will be able to find their own favourite corner — ours was the Sparkle suite’s veranda floating above the pond, and the second-level open-sided living area looking out over the glorious gardens created by Bali landscaping supremo Made Widjaya. Waru’s two residences are joined by a pathway through the garden making it ideal for two families (or even three) holidaying together. We also think it would be the ideal space for yoga and wellbeing retreats — and a magical venue for weddings and special celebrations.

Visiting seven years after the first review, we were able to appreciate this extraordinary villa from a different perspective. So many newer-build villas sit in small gardens hemmed in by neighbours. In contrast, the multi-pavilion Waru offers the space, privacy and imaginatively furnished interiors of a bygone age — a rare privilege that we can’t wait to repeat.

We thought that the villa staff did a great job under the caring eye of Ibu Rai, the villa supervisor, preparing meals from an extensive menu of Indonesian and western dishes (provisions on guest account at cost plus a 25% service fee). Waru has a permanent team of staff and more are brought in when the villa is fully occupied.

Wetakeiya House

Wetakeiya House

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Dickwella

You could easily hole yourself up for weeks on end here. As a writer, I thought Wetakeiya House felt like the perfect bolthole for composing and relaxing. It’s clearly a cherished home, and we loved the oversized daybeds, the interesting photographs and prints, and the eye-catching antiques artfully scattered throughout the house. There is loads of living space for six people and we liked that the pool was out of sight of the house as it gave yet another private spot for chilling out. The garden eventually leads to a collection of huge rocks smashed by the sea – a great scene for photographing but definitely not for swimming!

With three bedrooms, Wetakeiya House is ideal for a family, but since the garden drops off in places and slopes down towards the rocky beach, it’s probably more suitable for children over three. Since the two guest bedrooms are situated to the back of the house, and the master opens straight onto the main veranda, the house would also work really well for an indulgent couple looking for a little extra privacy and space. With a garden ripe for barbecues, fairly equally sized bedrooms, convivial living spaces and a good music system, groups of friends (singles or couples) could have lots of fun here too.

There’s a small staff team of four, and the lovely couple who manage the villa have recently returned from over 30 years in the Middle East and Greece. One of the pair, Chris, who is also the cook, prepares the usual Sri Lankan fare along with dishes she’s discovered on her travels. We dined on baked cheese gnocchi with salad, and for breakfast, tried her amazing pol sambol (grated coconut with lime, chilli and tomato).

Villa Windu Asri

Villa Windu Asri

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

The fountain courtyard that lies just behind the front door of Windu Asri is a perfect regal welcome for the splendid residence that lies inside.  Of course, we had seen the pictures online but it didn’t really prepare us for the sheer grandeur of the villa.  Imagine a Raffles Hotel, built for one privileged group complete with a private swimming pool and all the bells and whistles of fine living but with the benefit of 21st century hindsight.  Everything about Windu Asri accommodated our love of comfort, technology, space and natural light.  It was also wonderfully quiet – all we could hear as we lazed beside the pool was birdsong.

A big shout out must go to the staff, without whom our stay would have been nowhere near as relaxing and satisfying as it was.  They made us feel as comfortable as if we were family and as special as if we were honoured guests.  When drinks were getting low they were there with a refill, be it beer or afternoon tea.  And the chef’s talents cannot be over-emphasized.  Although the villa is in a prime location for all the great new restaurants for which Bali is becoming increasingly renowned, we were more than happy to eat at the villa for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The food is beyond delicious… as is the villa.  Book it!

Villa Windu Sari

Villa Windu Sari

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

During our inspection of Villa Windu Sari we were treated to great service and cuisine by the staff. The villa is modern, functional, practical and most importantly comfortable. We felt very at home here. Our visit was with a group of friends and we found Windu Sari well laid out and generous enough for us to be able to enjoy each other’s company or retreat for some privacy and solitude when we wished. The villa would also work well for families.
