The heart of Villa Jemma is the large living and dining room, which is fan-cooled under a high pitched roof. Here, a huge U-shaped rattan sofa with white cushioned seats fills one half of the room, looking towards glass doors that open to the pool deck. On the other side is a dining table for eight next to more glass doors that slide open to a sunny walled courtyard with a circular table and four chairs, and a pond inhabited by a family of colourful koi fish. Next to the fully-equipped kitchen (the domain of the chef) is a bar with a fridge, sink and cupboards well-stocked with glasses as well as an iPod dock and Bose sound system wired to the living areas and garden. On the opposite side of the living area is an open staircase leading up to the master bedroom; below this a door leads to a guest bedroom and a study/TV room that doubles as a kids’ bedroom. Three air-conditioned bedrooms are furnished with king-size beds with batik clad headboards and accessories, penshell tables and large wall mirrors, built-in wardrobes, and doors that open to garden or an upstairs balcony-terrace in the case of the master – with treetop and rooftop views and a large daybed, making it a nice spot for reading. All of the bedrooms have hardwood floors and satellite-channel TVs, Balinese carved lamps, and many other Indonesian touches. Three have ensuite bathrooms are all semi-open-air; three have bathtubs and all four have open-air freestanding monsoon showers. The air-conditioned study, which has a bathroom next door, is furnished with two couches that can be made up as single beds. There is a computer here for guest use, a 40-inch flat-screen TV/DVD player, a good library of DVDs and a few books. The immaculately-kept garden features a 16m lap pool, with a shallow area for kids, bordered by a stone deck with sunloungers and umbrellas. The thatched balé pavilion on the far side is elevated and large enough for six people to stretch out on three double mattresses. A small lawn of super-soft grass, white stepping stones, and flowering trees complete the picture.
