The elongated veranda at No. 39 Galle Fort’s entrance is veiled from Lighthouse Street by a latticed timber screen. Beyond, a door pierces the middle of the house and leads into a spacious open-plan living room with a 30-feet high vaulted ceiling.  The house’s Dutch-style character reveals itself in the period furnishings and the wide archway stretching across the room that marks an invisible boundary between living and dining areas.

Directly to the left of the front door is a lounge furnished with a convivial quartet of daybeds topped with an array of cushions in burgundy hues – a colour scheme that’s consistent throughout the house.  To the right is a bedroom with a queen-size copper-studded bed, matching furniture and a Lighthouse Street outlook.

Beyond the lounge a grand three-metre, 10-seater dining table basks in the glow of low-hanging copper pendant lamps and is cooled by whirring ceiling fans.  A giant mirror hangs on the wall.  Adjacent to the dining area, a cement staircase ascends to the first floor and a cosy mezzanine TV lounge.

Below the stairs, saloon doors lead into a fully equipped kitchen.  The kitchen can also be accessed via a pillared L-shaped veranda that lies just beyond the twin folding doors at the end of the dining area – a tranquil spot furnished with a daybed and rattan chairs.  The veranda flanks a serene courtyard garden where an alfresco dining table for six provides an idyllic spot for lazy breakfasts and evening cocktails.  Also facing onto the garden is a bedroom furnished with a king-size four-poster bed wrapped in mosquito netting.

The master bedroom is on the first floor.  Entered via a small reading room equipped with a pair of daybeds suitable for sleeping two small children, this breezy room has a king-size four-poster bed, folding doors onto a long galley balcony and views across the red-tiled rooftops of neighbouring buildings.  All bedrooms are cooled by both air-conditioning and ceiling fans and have ensuite bathrooms fitted with showers.
