Villa Ubud is entered via a solid teak door which firmly shuts out the world beyond, making this little pad a very private place. The two-storey building is positioned within a walled courtyard, incorporating a 6m swimming pool fed by a pair of barong (mythical lion-like creature) waterspouts.
There is no lawn or garden but the walls and pool are bordered by an array of tropical shrubs including red flowering hibiscus, torch ginger, frangipani and palms galore. The living and dining pavilion is an open-sided structure adjoining the main building, featuring a soaring roof supported by coconut wood pillars above a terrazzo floor.
Cooled by ceiling fans the pavilion presents high-quality furnishings including rattan sofas and chairs, a coffee table and a dining table for six, and is equipped with a sound system and iPod dock. Guests can step straight into the pool from here, or sit in the sun on a small deck furnished with four sunbeds. There are two bedrooms at Villa Ubud, one of which doubles as a study/TV room. Both rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a ceiling fan, safe deposit box, and a large flat-screen satellite-channel TV and DVD player. Depending on guest requirements, sofas in the ground floor room can be converted to a king or twin beds. Other furnishings here include a large wardrobe, desk and chair. The semi-open-air ensuite bathroom is fashioned in cream-coloured marble and is fitted with a standing monsoon shower, twin washbasins and a bathtub that sits next to a tiny walled garden with a bubbling water feature.
A small self-contained kitchen downstairs is equipped with a two-burner hob, marble worktops, fridge, microwave, and quality tableware. A Palimanan stone staircase leads up to a breezy sunset lounge, open on two sides. Furnished with a large daybed and a coffee table, it looks down over the swimming pool and offers wide views of the neighbouring roofs and flowering treetops. Next to this, under a pitched roof, the second bedroom is furnished with a netted king-size bed, wardrobe, desk and chair. The lovely ensuite bathroom is the same as the downstairs ensuite minus the open-air feature.
