In the style of a time-honoured Balinese compound home with a separate building for each function, Villa Belong Dua is composed of a series of pavilions and a swimming pool set within a beautiful walled garden. The imposing entrance is a copy of a Hindu temple gate, positioned next to a lily pond and guarded by a Balinese statue. Close to this is the open-sided living pavilion, furnished with a large sofa and floor cushions, and a low dining table sourced from a Javanese warung (eatery). A long mirror reflects the garden and pool, and the pavilion is gorgeously lit at night. Behind this is an air-conditioned home theatre/study, complete with soft leather sofas and a large flat-screen satellite-channel TV/DVD player with surround sound.

Cooled by ceiling fans and natural breezes, the semi-open-air dining room is linked to the kitchen by a service hatch, and furnished with an antique table for six. The polished concrete kitchen is fully equipped with a five-burner gas hob and oven, fridge and modern appliances, yet still retains a rustic charm. A guest washroom is situated to one side. Electric blinds protect the living areas and bedroom terraces from the rain, complete with a clear plastic strip across the middle so as not to impede your views of the garden.

Belong Dua’s two romantic bedrooms are housed in separate stand-alone pavilions with timber floors, high vaulted roofs and open-air terraces at the front, complete with cushioned daybeds. Each air-conditioned bedroom presents a king-size netted bed, antique furnishings and a TV/DVD player. Each has a dressing area with wardrobes, and an ensuite air-conditioned bathroom, decorated in earthy tones and fitted with a sculptured terrazzo bathtub for two which has a very unique tap system: the water comes out of a hole in the wall and gently cascades down the stonework into the tub. A circular skylight channels the moonlight, while glass doors can be opened for a semi-alfresco bathing experience. The adjoining courtyard is equipped with an outdoor rain shower where guests’ privacy is guarded by high walls and a serene Buddha statue.

The wonderful garden features mature trees, velvety lawns, a fruit and herb garden, and a 20m swimming pool lined with natural river rock. An antique, open-sided, ceremonial pavilion rests beside the pool, and is used for relaxation and massage. Finally, a thatched jineng (rice barn) serves as another place to chill-out or as a playhouse for kids.
