Villas in Koh Samui, Thailand

The third largest island in Thailand, Koh Samui is just 21km at its widest point and 25km at its longest. The hinterland consists of forested limestone hills and the shoreline is made up of countless coconut palm-fringed beaches and bays.

Traditionally a coconut plantation and fisherman's haven, in the last few years the island has grown into a major holiday destination with regular connections to Bangkok and direct flights from Hong Kong and Singapore. Despite rapid development, Samui is small enough to retain its charm and its modest size also makes it a convenient, laid back location even during busy seasons.

As well as fine beaches, Samui is known for recreation, relaxation and fine food. The blue waters of the Thai Gulf provide a wealth of possibility for water sports, while on land the island is well known for its professional and indulgent spas and health retreats. Fresh seafood is a specialty at most of Samui's restaurants, but you can also enjoy food from almost every corner of the globe thanks to the island's strong international influences.

Each beach on Samui has its own particular character and ambience. The east coast beaches of Chaweng and Lamai are busy, commercial areas with everything from beach vendors to fast food chains, while to the north, Bang Rak and Bo Phut have a more relaxed local village atmosphere. Beaches like Lipa Noi and Laem Set on the western and southern shores feel much more remote and untouched.

Koh Samui combines comfort and convenience with a sense of real escape and this has made it a popular choice for residential as well as tourist development. The island is an eclectic blend of nature and sophistication, one that draws repeat visitors every year to indulge in its tropical delights.

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Rattana Thep

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Rattana Thep

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

It's rare to feel the spirit of history on a modern-day holiday island like Koh Samui, especially staying in a brand new, luxury villa. But Baan Rattana Thep soon transported us back to the colonial era. The architecture and fittings may be state-of-the-art, and certainly add to the extravagant experience, but it’s the carefully chosen art and artefacts that inspire you, bringing to mind learned pursuits such as poetry, philosophical conversation and an appreciation of fine wine.

There's plenty of space and opportunity for less cerebral activities too. You can fritter away the days lazing by the pool, lounging in the garden or relaxing on your bedroom terrace just enjoying the surroundings. Add to that TVs in virtually every room, hooked up to satellite and DVDs players, not to mention a villa-wide sound system, and you're never without options for holiday distraction.

It's unlikely you will want to venture out for meals either with a private chef on hand to prepare a range of delectable Thai and western dishes from a varied suggestion menu (ingredients on guest account). But if you do get itchy taste buds, the villa manageress will happily recommend options both in nearby Lipa Noi or Taling Ngam, even further afield if you don't mind the drive.

Staying within a development, albeit in high-walled privacy, offers opportunities to socialise with the neighbours and the beachside dining sala (gazebo) is great place to entertain. A heavy set of wooden gates actually connects through to the villa next door and renting two of the Dhevatara Cove properties would definitely create an impressive private wedding or party venue.

Baan Rattana Thep is a versatile property with a character of its own that makes you feel fortunate from the moment you enter its bounteous grounds.

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Samlarn

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Samlarn

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

We struggled to tear ourselves away from the comfortable sun loungers at Baan Samlarn, except to take a cooling dip in the pool every so often, or a stroll on the beach with its postcard-perfect view at sunset. As dusk approaches, the villa puts on her party dress. Candles are lit by the staff who, though almost unseen, are always there when you need them, tea-lights are dotted across the lawn and lanterns are lit. Cocktails or a barbecue at the sala are a perfect way to welcome the sunset.

The villa emits a warm glow and delicious smells waft from the kitchen as dinner is prepared. The villa's in-house chef is talented, and has no problem preparing special requests. With fishermen strolling past on the beach, fresh seafood is a regular feature on the menu.

Samui offers plenty to do if active holidays are your thing, but if your goal is pure rest and relaxation, Baan Samlarn is a great choice: from the comfortable, peaceful bedrooms, to the double-bed-sized pool loungers and the assortment of lounge areas, you’ll easily find a place to rejuvenate, ready for another day of doing as you please. But don't be tempted to sleep away too much of your time when there's so much else to enjoy at the villa – Khun Fon will be happy to arrange for a professional masseuse to deliver a treatment either at the beach sala, or in the comfort of your room.

Although the ferry pier is only 200m away, it's no bother; you'll only hear a short horn toot as boats depart and dock. In fact, it adds interest to what would otherwise be an uneventful, albeit pretty beach scene.

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Tao Talay

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Tao Talay

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

As much as Samui has to offer, we struggled to pull ourselves away from Baan Tao Talay’s comfortable terry cloth covered sun loungers, except perhaps for a dip in the pool every so often, or to take a stroll on the beach with its postcard-perfect sunset views. As dusk approaches, the villa puts on her party dress. Candles are lit by the staff who, though for the most part unseen, are always there when you need them. Tea-lights are dotted across the lawn, lanterns lit and cocktails prepared: we highly recommend Khun Joy's Mojito, bursting with mint and lime, and a perfect way to welcome the sunset.

The villa emits a warm glow, and delicious smells waft from the kitchen as dinner is prepared for us to enjoy in the beachside sala. The villa's talented in-house chef has no problem preparing special requests. His repertoire of vegetarian dishes is vast and he even makes his own tofu. With seafood literally on the doorstep – bought from the fishermen who walk the beach – fish is a regular item on the menu.

Oh the beds! If your goal is to get some rest during your stay at Tao Talay, you won't be disappointed. Dressed in crisp white linen, a duvet to snuggle into and with both foam and down pillows, these beds will guarantee you wake refreshed each morning, ready for another day of doing as you please. We also admired how silent the air-con is. But don't be tempted to sleep away too much of your time when there's so much else to enjoy at the villa. Should you fancy a massage, ask Khun Joy to arrange a professional masseuse and relax with a treatment either at the beach sala, or in the comfort of your room.

Dhevatara Residence - Baan Bua Sawan

Dhevatara Residence - Baan Bua Sawan

Thailand » Koh Samui » Mae Nam

A picture-postcard beach view is lovely, but sometimes a busy beach scene, viewed from on high is far more interesting. Trying to read a book on one of Baan Bua Sawan’s sun-loungers was difficult – not for any lack of comfort, but because the view was just too interesting to concentrate. Watching the fishermen go about their business and the luxury sailboats anchored in the bay was a very pleasant distraction though. And the villa’s elevated position means that although you’re in a development of several villas, the pool terrace is absolutely private.

The villa’s furnishings are comfortable and homely and it’s well equipped when it comes to audio-visual gadgetary – each bedroom has a TV/DVD, and the master suite and living room also offer satellite channels. There’s an iPod dock too should you wish to bring your own music. We stayed by the pool well into the evening, enjoying a glass of wine as the sun set over the bay. Only the delicious aroma of our dinner wafting from the kitchen drew us inside to the air-conditioned dining room. We took advantage of the option of a private chef (extra charge), as a day in the sun made us too lazy to venture out. The chef is skilled in both Thai and Western cuisine, and in the open-plan kitchen we enjoyed watching the preparation of our favourite local dishes. If you need to work off the meal, there’s the option of laps in the 10m pool, and of course the stairs do the job too. Reading a book in the raised bath of the master suite was an indulgence that those in the other rooms were envious of – but they had large rain showers to enjoy.

As the villa is set back from the main road, we heard no traffic noise, other that the occasional ‘put-put’ from long-tail boat engines. From the security guard who saluted us every time we passed, to the bubbly villa manager, and even the unobtrusive housekeeper, we found all staff to be not only professional, but also pleasant and friendly.

Dhevatara Residence - Baan Leelawadee

Thailand » Koh Samui » Mae Nam

Lying on a comfortable poolside sun lounger just above the beach at Baan Leelawadee, watching the fishermen go about their business and the luxury boats sail in and out of the bay provided a very pleasant distraction - even if it did mean that not much of my book got read!  And the villa’s slightly elevated position means that, although we could spy on them, the fishermen and anyone strolling on the beach couldn't easily see us.

We stayed poolside well into the evening, enjoying a glass of wine as the sun set over the bay, and chatting to some locals grilling shellfish they’d just caught, right there on the beach. Only the delicious aroma of our dinner wafting from the kitchen drew us inside to the air-conditioned dining room. Having a chef on hand was a treat, as a day in the sun made us too lazy to venture out. The chef is skilled in both Thai and Western cuisine, and in the open-plan kitchen we enjoyed watching the preparation of some favourite local dishes. The villa’s simple furnishings are comfortable and homely and we slept well in the master suite’s pretty four-poster bed after relaxing in a bubble bath.

As the villa is set back from the main road, we heard no traffic noise other than the occasional ‘put-put’ from long-tail boat engines. From the security guard who saluted us every time we passed, to the bubbly chef who prepared out dinner and breakfast, and even the unobtrusive housekeeper, we found all staff to be not only professional, but also pleasant and friendly.
