What a wonderful villa! Apsara offered us plush comfort, an excellent chef and a wonderful riverside location all within easy reach of Bentota’s long sweep of beach. We enjoyed the company of the staff who always greeted us with a smile and made us feel so welcome. The chef, in particular, stood out for his conviviality and amazing food. The house and garden were both immaculate: it felt as though we were the first ever visitors. The lighting was also especially good. The bedrooms and living areas are all air conditioned, although we just left the doors open as there was always a refreshing breeze coming off the river.

There’s a wall-mounted DVD and Blu-ray disc player in the living room (loads of DVDs) and a surround-sound music system with iPod dock set up so you can hear your favourite tunes inside or by the pool. There’s also a good WiFi connection throughout the villa so you can easily get online if you bring your own kit.

Apsara has its own private jetty and is well connected with a locally renowned water sports outfitter who can come and pick you up from the villa in their boat. There’s a good supermarket just up the road from the villa that stocks loads of imported goods and the fresh produce market is right on your doorstep too. The staff will buy groceries for you though, and with such an amazing chef to feed you (and a wonderful menu) it’s unlikely you’ll be doing much more than ‘window’ shopping.

Highlights

Apsara is only a couple of years old but it still feels brand new, such is the standard of finish and careful maintenance in the villa. I loved the simple yet luxurious design that’s full of cushy contemporary furnishings and eye-catching antique pieces. The staff were excellent and looked after us beautifully; they were also fountains of knowledge on the local area and were able to give us plenty of ideas about what to do. We grew especially fond of the chef as he created such incredible cuisine. What a gem. Mention must also be made of the villa’s location. Although it’s within walking distance of town and just a five-minute drive (or boat ride) to beach where water sports activities abound, it’s still lovely and serene and feels a million miles away from anywhere.

Surprises

Mosquitoes in the evenings were the only things that bothered us at Apsara. If you’re sitting outside or have the doors open then make sure you apply plenty of repellent. The bedrooms and the living areas are all air conditioned so if you close the doors at dusk you can prevent them from coming indoors.

The Apsara villa is an absolutely fantastic place to stay at and relax for either a group of friends or a family. The facilities provided (lounge area, swimming pool, dining area, bedrooms, bathrooms etc) can easily compare to the best 5 star hotels (or even better!) and the effort put in to maintain the facilities is commendable. The interior decor of the villa is fabulous and we thought was of very high standards. But the best feature of the villa is its staff - the manager Priyantha, the chef Siri and all of Siri's helpers are really nice people and would go to any extent to ensure that their guests feel comfortable. As an example: the villa does not have satellite cable TV services but Priyantha went out of the way to provide us with a cable connection to watch a really interesting cricket match! Apsara villa is super value for money and I'm pretty sure we will go back for a longer stay there very soon. Thanks to everyone at the Apsara villa :)
