What a funky place this is! We reckon Coco Chanel would have ‘slummed it’ at Villa Barissan if she were still with us and strapped for cash.

We were well sorted for restaurants and bars – and even for a bit of risqué entertainment just around the corner on Bali’s flambuoyant drag strip, if you catch our drift. Drink and dance the night away and then be home in minutes and ready to hit the beach at first light – it’s only 700m away!

Despite the proximity to restaurants, the self-catering aspect is brilliant to fall back on after spending too long at the beach if you really just can’t be bothered to head out – even for pizza. We brought along a few groceries and beers and cooked our own dinner in a kitchen more than adequate for our needs.

We were looked after by a very sweet housekeeper who served us our welcome drinks, showed us around and would have stayed and waited on us if we had wanted. But we sent her home early (with a big smile on her face) and got some serious clothing-optional private time in beside the pool. And do we mean private! Nobody gets a look in from outside thanks to the high walls and bamboo, but the sunshine makes a big appearance and puts the loungers in high demand.

Highlights

For those who simply love to walk (or is that stagger?) home and away, the location couldn’t be better. Clubs, restaurants, beach and shopping are all well within flag-fall on your taxi. And the price of the villa? Fuggedaboutit! With this amount of funky smooth interior design and privacy going on you couldn’t get better value if you tried.

Surprises

Shabby chic may be de rigeur but when things start to get just shabby it’s time for some action. The deck around the pool looks old and haggard and has had its missing bits replaced with hand-me-downs that don’t quite fit. It’s not going to collapse or anything but just feels a tad dodgy underfoot. There is a visual dichotomy with only one small TV in the living room serviced by a huge daybed. And there’s no music system, so bring an iPod and travel speakers to match the drapes.
