Arriving at Villa Mayana with a small group of friends, we immediately felt both at home and spoilt in all the right ways. The design and layout is perfect for plenty of social hang-out time, while the open views of gardens, pool, rice fields and sky give a grand impression.

It was a treat to soak in the luxurious tubs in the downstairs ensuites, and while the upstairs bedroom lacks a tub, it does have its own furnished landing area overlooking the lounge, and is good spot for some private reading or surfing the net from your laptop (WiFi connection is not the strongest, so don’t expect to be doing much downloading). This upstairs bedroom would not be suitable for younger kids though, as neither the steps nor the landing area is safely railed.

Feeling so peacefully secluded and surrounded by nature, yet with such easy access to all that Bali has to offer thanks to a complimentary car and driver (guests do pay for petrol), we felt that Villa Mayana offers a well-rounded home away from home.

Highlights

When it came to getting out and about, having a car and driver on standby was a huge benefit and really topped off the holiday experience. We were able to go on day trips all over the island, while ducking out for a night on the town or a swim at the beach was easy too. The views of gardens, rice fields and the open sky from the villa are definitely a winning factor, especially when it comes to moonlit dips under the stars.

Surprises

As Villa Mayana has only recently opened its doors to guests (March 2011), some aspects are still being perfected and there were a few surprises. Access to the butler’s room is through the main lounge and dining area and it was a little disconcerting when he made unexpected appearances. If you would prefer more privacy, you can ask for the butler to sleep off-site. The television in the lounge is very high up, which makes viewing a little awkward (but does avoid blocking the lovely views). As meals (apart from breakfast) are not provided, we’d also suggest that you request to have some food and drinks pre-stocked for your arrival (or hire a chef!). The manager, Made is very helpful and will do whatever it takes to make sure you are happy and at home.
