Villa Arika

Villa Arika

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

For those who love the ocean (like us), there are few experiences that can match staying right on the beach – especially in a spacious and luxurious tropical villa – so Villa Arika definitely ticked all our boxes. The views are quintessential Bali; everything we expected and more – especially from the master bedroom, which has a lovely private deck. With the huge lawns, the rugged coastline in both directions, and the ocean stretching to the horizon, there is a fabulous feeling of space and openness. Landscaping is thoughtful, with rounded garden beds that mimic the curves of the shore and are filled with low shrubs that complement, rather than distract from the ocean views.

We quickly adapted to the rhythms of nature – lounging by the pool, exploring rock pools on the beach exposed at low tide, languishing in the flamboyant sunsets. Evenings had their own gentle allure with the soft glow of candles and hurricane lanterns. Dinners at the wonderful marble dining table were particularly memorable, surrounded by magically lit lily ponds. Pererenan is delightfully sleepy and serene, and most of the time we were really happy just to chill at the villa and relax, but it was great to have a driver on hand  when we managed to tear ourselves away.

Arnalaya Beach House

Arnalaya Beach House

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Five minutes after our arrival at Arnalaya Beach House we felt we had found our place in the world! Lovers of light, bright homes will love this villa.  Each room has floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors on two walls, which bathe it in an orgy of natural sunlight.

The staff are very professional and it was the talented chef himself who served our delicious meals, giving us an explanation of the magic he had worked in the kitchen on our behalf.

The bedrooms have a double set of blinds to keep out the morning sun, making it very tempting to sleep with the doors open, listening to the sound of the sea.  With a three-man security team on the premises, you can rest perfectly at ease.

Don’t come here expecting to get any work done.  A stay at Arnalaya Beach House is all about enjoying yourself – with a bit of tennis, a gym workout and a spa treatment thrown into the mix – while letting the ‘rhythm of the waves’ wash over you.

Villa Asante

Villa Asante

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Architecturally simple yet eminently comfortable, Villa Asante makes a great holiday pad for a couple of families. The layout is very practical, especially the open sided common areas which flow so well to the pool. It is commendable that the owners have resisted the temptation to build a mega-villa on what is quite a big plot – resulting in much more open space to relax and for kids to run around in. The pool is superb, with shallow sections for toddlers and practical decking which is not slippery even with wet feet (unlike the terrazzo floors). It could do with a little more shade although there are sun umbrellas and a very pleasant balé. Bedrooms are practical and comfortable too, and the bathrooms really are very good, especially the downstairs ones with outside showers and walled gardens. On a recent re-visit we found the (now much more experienced) staff to be superb and the food conjured up by the chef to be tasty, if a little pricey.

Avalon I

Avalon I

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

There are a lot of great things to say about this villa.  First, thank you wholeheartedly to the staff for the warm welcome and for graciously putting up with all our requests.  They made everything about this trip special for us and we’ll never forget it.  The owners obviously put a lot of careful thought and attention into the villa as well.  There are all kinds of interesting artefacts on display and plenty of travel guides and books on Asian interior design to digest.  The bedrooms were larger than expected, and the TV and DVD player were a big plus.

But the winning feature of Avalon has to be its location. It was a treat to find such a large – and affordable – villa so close to the beach in Canggu.  Being able to pop out to the beach without having to pack a day’s worth of stuff for the whole family was the most freeing holiday experience we’ve had in years.  We could essentially wake up and go straight down to the beach, and then bob back and forth between the beach and the villa as we pleased. It’s that close.

Staying on a dead-end road was also really special because it meant the beachfront was much quieter than other beaches where cars and motorbikes could go.  Walking through the La Laguna restaurant and crossing its wooden bridge to get to the ocean was a welcome detour (rather than sneaking by on the footpath beside it) and we spent plenty of time as patrons there, too.  You could easily watch the sunset there daily.  As big fans, we didn’t mind hearing their weekend DJ sets from the outside areas of our villa.  I would stay at Avalon again in a heartbeat.

Avalon II

Avalon II

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Hats off to the team at Avalon for delivering an amazing holiday experience for our family.  Thank you!  We were made to feel like VIPs with the most courteous care and would have gladly stayed forever in this fairytale setting by the sea.  We came for a beach experience, but this villa stole our hearts.  Its proximity to the beachfront was what led us to Avalon II, and the location is something special; but the charm of the villa is indescribable.

We’ve rented other vacation homes in Bali, but never opted for a villa with living areas quite so open to the elements.  I’m not the woodsy camping type.  Well, Avalon II’s open-sided living room is gorgeous in every way and suits a Bali holiday just fine.  One relatively small square space combines the modern with the traditional and the fab with the practical.  I was blown away by things like quick-drying patio furniture below a hand-carved wood ceiling and the grand woven basket which is lovely art and holds umbrellas at the ready in case of tropical showers.  The joglo accommodated our needs throughout all phases of each day, the same poolside patio and games room where the kids could drip with pool water also passing as a dining room in the evening complete with antique chandelier.

Initially hesitant about Avalon II’s the size and layout, now I think every two-bedroom villa should be just like this, with an outdoor living room by the swimming pool.  Again, it must be said that also behind the magic ambience and versatility of the villa are the staff who mop up, keep things sparkling and deliver meals like clockwork, which they do so discreetly and effortlessly.  We’re bragging about this trip to everyone we know in hopes they’ll join us for a short break before too long, and perhaps we can all stay in the main villa together for a group holiday.  With or without them, we’ll be back.  Don’t change anything!

Avalon III

Avalon III

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Staying at Avalon III exceeded all my expectations.  It is a small villa but has everything two people could ask for.  The exclusivity, privacy and location of this place make it my favourite one-bedroom villa in Canggu, and I would choose it again and again over any Bali five-star hotel with a front desk and fancy spa.  I recommend this villa to anyone, especially if you love the beach.

Who would have thought you could have your own little tropical beach house with a private pool for the price of a luxury hotel room?  We appreciated having air-conditioning in every room, and with glass doors looking onto the pool deck from the living room and bedroom, it still has a tropical jungle vibe, whether you are indoors or out by the pool.  Outside, there isn’t much of a yard, but there’s a table big enough for two to dine alfresco, and a set of wicker lounge chairs by the pool for sunning in total privacy.  At night, the pool lights up and you can gaze at the stars, so very easy to turn up the romance.

You can make your own meals, order groceries or room service, or get delivery from outside.  The villa staff were flexible and responsive to our requests.  We asked for maximum privacy, so they’d wait until we left to tidy everything brilliantly, and then they were always available outside the villa when we came back in the evening if we wanted anything.

Bendega Nui

Bendega Nui

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Staying at Bendega Nui is a wonderful way to experience Bali. The neighbouring paddy fields scattered with colourful flags and tinkling bells to scare the birds away from the ripening rice; the crowing cockerels; clear blue skies and amazing sunsets were a delight in themselves, but to enjoy all of this from the luxurious surroundings of this stunning new villa (completed end 2009) was a real privilege.

The super-comfortable beds (I felt like Alice in Wonderland climbing up onto the deep mattress of the canopied four-poster in our bedroom!), bold colourful fabrics, tasteful pieces of art, impressive sound system and blissful swimming pool were just some of the features that made a very clear statement about how much care and thought Bendega Nui's owners (who regularly stay there themselves) have put into the design and finish of their tropical holiday home.

In recent years, the Canggu area has sprouted some exciting new venues for drinks and/or dinner – several of which you can walk to from the villa. That said, we felt no desire to eat out after sampling the chef's culinary creations: From roasted vegetable salads, to steak and chips, to chicken curry, cheesecakes and crème brulée – everything was beautifully presented, absolutely delicious, and served with a smile.

Bendega Nui is a peaceful retreat; breezes from the nearby coast kept things cool wherever we chose to relax – and there was no shortage of options, from the hidden deck beyond the pool, to the shady reading pavilion next to one of the pretty ponds, to the bedroom balconies with their lovely views. And what better way to round off the day than with a glass of wine and a good movie on the big-screen plasma TV, or a social game of pool over a couple of beers – listening to whatever takes your fancy from the vast selection on the Sonos sound system (or bring your own – iPod docks in every bedroom). We felt that Bendega has something to please everyone in the family and would also make a great place for a group of friends to get together for a holiday, as well as (especially if you rent the one-bedroom suite and three-bedroom Bendega Rato next door) an exceptional and truly memorable wedding venue.

Bendega Rato

Bendega Rato

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Sipping a cold glass of something while watching a spectacular Bali sunset from the roof-garden balé at Bendega Rato is a memorable experience in itself. And the experience is enhanced by the super-comfortable beds, bold fabrics, tasteful pieces of art and furniture, impressive sound system and blissful swimming pool – all indicative of the care and thought Bendega Villas’ owners have put into their their tropical holiday home.

There is no shortage of places to relax here, from the roof-garden to the convivial pool pavilion, to the upstairs bedroom balconies with their lovely views. And for those who’d rather retreat indoors to the media room there’s a vast choice of movies and music to be enjoyed on the 55-inch plasma screen with Apple TV and a blue-ray DVD player, or on the integrated Sonos sound system.

Although there is an ever-growing selection of restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the villa, we felt no desire to eat out after sampling Chef Dewa's culinary delights: from pizza cooked to order in the wood-burning brick oven, to roast vegetable salad, chicken curry, cheesecake and crème brulée – everything was beautifully presented, absolutely delicious, and served with a smile. While Bendega Rato comes across as quite a grown-up villa, there’s still something to please everyone in the family and, with the option of renting the adjoining one bedroom pavilion, or even sister villa, 5-bedroom Bendega Nui, it also becomes a great place for a big group of friends to get together, or a terrific wedding venue.
