Bayu Gita Residence

Bayu Gita Residence

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Ketewel

We wanted for nothing at Bayu Gita Residence.  The villa blends all the charms and appeal of a contemporary beach house with the stylish luxury of Bali villa living.  Thoughtful design, graceful Balinese aesthetics, natural building materials, the friendliest of welcomes, and what seems like great feng shui, all conspire to create an atmosphere that is warm and inviting, and we felt right at home from the moment we walked in.  While the design itself is delightfully simple and unpretentious, the luxury is in the details, and it is abundantly clear that no expense has been spared in creating this tasteful abode.  Interiors are refreshingly uncluttered – decoration seem unnecessary when the lavish finishing’s of the villa are themselves a work of art; from richly-hued dark timber latticed panels and highly detailed stone work, to delicately beaded cushions, swishing burgundy drapes and gorgeous framed textiles.  The beautiful white flowers that dangle from the vine-covered trellis on the patio add a touch of whimsy.

While the property is not huge, the space had been wonderfully utilised, and the open design makes it feel really fresh and spacious, especially with the sun streaming into the garden and all the doors thrown open to the sea breeze.  Expansive views from the upper floor, with tantalising glimpses of the sea, add to the sense of space.

There’s no doubt that, when rented in conjunction with its big sister, six-bedroomed Villa Bayu Gita, Bayu Gita Residence would make a wonderful and very memorable beachside wedding venue.

Majapahit Beach - Villa Maya

Majapahit Beach - Villa Maya

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Ketewel

We loved Villa Maya, primarily for location, location, location.  Majapahit is wonderfully isolated and private – in fact it can feel like you’re the only person on the island.  Combine this with regular doses of fresh sea spray and breezes and it’s a great place for clearing the mind.  With this in, well, mind, it’s worth paying that bit extra for the absolute seafront Villas Maya and Samudra.  The two garden villas behind (Nataraja and Raj), just don’t offer quite the same location value.

While Majapahit Villas may not be prime position for restaurants and nightlife (with a team of chefs producing gourmet cuisine from Majapahit's professional kitchen, who needs restaurants?), they offer some unique guest benefits, including a private boat for sight-seeing, fishing and snorkelling trips, and Villa Maya has its very own temple which makes a wonderfully Balinese setting for a special ceremony.  Some of Bali's best surf beaches (especially during the East Coast Season – November to May) are within an easy drive, as are the fascinating traditional craft villages of Mas, Sukawati, Batubulan and Batuan, as well as Ketewel and Saba which are both renowned for their elegant Legong dance performances.

Aside from location, Villa Maya and co are really just comfortable, ‘liveable’ holiday venues. Let’s call it ‘luxury for beginners’.  The staff are genuinely warm and helpful, if a touch over-eager (they tend to hover unless you are quite clear about being left alone); the in-villa chef is quite a dab hand in the kitchen (best spaghetti bolognaise we’ve had on the island to date); and the facilities/amenities are all thought of – including an excellent stock of the latest release DVDs).

It may not be the most swish accommodation on the island, but its understated luxury feels ‘homey’, the type of place that finds you thinking, ‘I could live here.’

Majapahit Beach - Villa Nataraja

Majapahit Beach - Villa Nataraja

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Ketewel

We really enjoyed Villa Nataraja (and its adjacent twin Villa Raj); it had a very intimate friendly ambiance and exuded a warm, comfortable, lived in feel.  Although the villa is not old, and is very well maintained, we found, on our recent re-visit, that it had lost some of its former lustre and was beginning to look a bit tired.  This isn’t really anyone’s fault; it’s just that being so close to the beach means constant upgrading and maintenance.  For instance, we wondered why the TVs in the bedrooms hadn’t been upgraded with flat-screen models and the manager explained that the new models they bought were affected by the sea air and keep going wrong, whereas the older style TVs proved to be more reliable!

The villa is particularly suitable people looking for get-away-from-it-all peace and quiet and is some distance from restaurants and nightlife.  However, the staff are very professional indeed and the food that comes out of the kitchen is excellent, so there's little need to go out.  The walled garden is very private and dominated by a great pool; the outside options (two balés and the sun loungers) were really pleasant, and being able to enjoy a jacuzzi in your own lounge has a certain seductive appeal.  It’s good to have the beach nearby, and the beach-side sundeck is handy for keeping an eye on the kids.  The rooms in the villa are well kitted out with huge beds and bathrooms. If you are looking for a small step up, consider paying a bit extra for Villa Maya, Majapahit’s absolute beachfront rental property.

Villa Pushpapuri

Villa Pushpapuri

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Ketewel

You cannot fail to enjoy Villa Pushpapuri – we certainly did during our stay. The staff were very helpful, the food was good and the setting superb. It was a real treat to be able to see and hear the sea from almost everywhere - by the fabulous swimming pool, at dinner (inside or out) or from most of the bedrooms. We also really enjoyed retiring to the underground bar in the evening for a beer and game of pool. The villa is only a few years old (2006) but the quality of finish is excellent and the maintenance first class which it has to be given its exposed coastal location. The gardens are a delight and the bright interiors very enjoyable. Villa Pushpapuri would make an excellent choice for families as there is a load to do.

Villa Samadhana

Villa Samadhana

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Ketewel

The first thing we noticed on entering Villa Samadhana was the wide open space, rarely seen these days in the more popular tourist centres of Bali. The kids ran a good 70m sprint from the entrance up to the living area, across manicured lawns and past flowering trees. Being a family of four, we had our choice of three separate sleeping pavilions but, as our youngest still wakes in the night, we opted for the master suite so we could be close together. With a king-size bed in the sleeping chamber and upholstered couches in the adjoining sitting room, the kids were excited about sleeping in an unconventional, yet comfortable space – especially with access to their own 32-inch flat-screen television.

The owners obviously love to spend quality family time here and the poolside pavilion is a well thought out covered area that provides unlimited opportunities for action, relaxation and play for the entire group. With a 25m lap pool, generously sized shallow area for toddlers, inflatable pool toys and four umbrella-shaded sun loungers, this was our ‘go to’ spot each day after breakfast.

The butler and his attendants soon realised that our small, low maintenance group didn’t require them at our beck and call all day and discretely left us to our own devices until we needed them. However, the villa’s extensive amenities and big team of full time staff are perfect for large groups and special events such as weddings. And chef Wayan is a magician in the kitchen. He and his team took care of the grocery shopping before our arrival, based on our selections from the vast menu emailed to us. As a first night surprise for the kids we’d ordered ice cream sundaes and banana splits - the perfect treat before watching a family movie in the air-conditioned media room.

The Pabean Beach area serves up a refreshing slice of unhurried Balinese life. Our daily strolls to the beach provided glimpses of an authentic village lifestyle: local children laughing and playing on the glittering, black-sand beach, elderly men chatting beneath their shady roadside shelters and ibu (mothers) skilfully wielding long, skinny sticks to knock down frangipani blossoms for daily prayer offerings.

The Ylang Ylang

The Ylang Ylang

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Ketewel

Initially, The Ylang Ylang can come across as quite daunting, especially the atrium, but it doesn't take long to settle in and feel comfortably at home. The staff are incredibly welcoming and gracious; some of them have been working here for nine years. The black and gold theme will not be to everyone’s taste – it is a bit glitzy – and we never did figure out what the blue lighting under the beds was all about!

Given its seafront location and the salt water environment maintenance is a continual battle and, in places, the villa is definitely showing its age. Some fittings may not work and some of the huge doors maybe stiff – it shouldn’t affect your enjoyment of Villa Ylang Ylang though, and staff are on hand if you need help with anything. Some of the bathrooms feel a little dated but they function just fine.
