Bidadari Cliffside Estate

Bidadari Cliffside Estate

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua

Remote but perfectly formed, this villa is a great recipe for a pure getaway; just for you and the people you have chosen to spend your holiday with – as it should be. Depending on how far you have travelled to get here, Bali may feel like the end of the Earth so, having come this far, why not drive the extra few kilometres to be right on the edge of it all at Bidadari. We welcomed the isolation and lack of modern distractions like boutiques and bars. Staying ‘at home’ all day and all night was a delight as we chilled out, looked after by a tremendous staff, who were always on hand to top up an empty glass or empty tummy. The home theatre has a lovely large telly and a decent DVD collection, but as good as it was it couldn’t compete with the heavenly views. We highly recommend waking early for sunrise; not only a spectacular show of nature but also an inspiring way to start another beautiful Bali day.

The chef prepared a lunch for us of fish cooked with turmeric and coconut, prawns grilled on the BBQ with garlic and lime, and some traditional Balinese salads, which was all superb. And at dinner time, he massaged a leg of New Zealand lamb to perfection over the barbecue’s naked flames. Sitting down to eat, we felt like characters out of a Goldilocks story because the oversized chairs were large enough to seat the largest of bears. Everything in this villa was brand spanking new and of the highest quality, and all the soft furnishings were super-comfy – we slept like angels.

Villa Waru

Villa Waru

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua

Its safe environment, spacious garden and loads of different living spaces make Villa Waru an absolute dream for large families. The garden is truly enchanting; full of little artistic touches; secreted statues, brightly painted doorways, timber carvings and stone gargoyles. Adventurous kids will love these surroundings and there’s plenty to keep them amused inside too; big TVs, DVDs, pool table, foosball table, board games etc. For parents’ extra peace of mind, a lifeguard can even attend at the villa (extra charge).

With such a generous scattering of living and dining space, everyone will be able to find their own favourite corner — ours was the Sparkle suite’s veranda floating above the pond, and the second-level open-sided living area looking out over the glorious gardens created by Bali landscaping supremo Made Widjaya. Waru’s two residences are joined by a pathway through the garden making it ideal for two families (or even three) holidaying together. We also think it would be the ideal space for yoga and wellbeing retreats — and a magical venue for weddings and special celebrations.

Visiting seven years after the first review, we were able to appreciate this extraordinary villa from a different perspective. So many newer-build villas sit in small gardens hemmed in by neighbours. In contrast, the multi-pavilion Waru offers the space, privacy and imaginatively furnished interiors of a bygone age — a rare privilege that we can’t wait to repeat.

We thought that the villa staff did a great job under the caring eye of Ibu Rai, the villa supervisor, preparing meals from an extensive menu of Indonesian and western dishes (provisions on guest account at cost plus a 25% service fee). Waru has a permanent team of staff and more are brought in when the villa is fully occupied.

The Shanti Residence

The Shanti Residence

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua

We’d heard some pretty tasty things about The Shanti Residence, so we arrived with great expectations. And this is what we found: the beds were soft, the sky was blue, the sun warm and the hospitality generous. After a delicious night’s sleep in a regal bed, followed by a sumptuous breakfast, the pool and its sun loungers were about as far as we managed to get for the lion’s share of the day. The staff were professional and, more importantly, readily on hand to bring us cold drinks, lunch and complimentary afternoon tea as we lay there soaking up the sounds of birdlife and views of the distant horizon. That night the kitchen produced a particularly tasty meal for us, which left us fit to bursting. Yes, cloaked in privacy and surrounded by greenery, this stunning villa nigh on forces total relaxation from its guests. Overlooking the sea, far, far away from the crowds, with three pools, a home cinema, superb staff and a tantalising menu of foods and wines, The Shanti Residence requires no leaving. So, bring your favourite books, toys, sunscreen and lover, and get ready for the stay of stays.
