Villa Levi

Villa Levi

Indonesia  »  Bali  »  Canggu

Villa Levi is without a doubt one of the best villas we have stayed in – and we have stayed in a few! Everything is so very comfortable and the bathroom in the master suite is beyond description… but we’ll try. Open to the jungly riverside and brimming with plants, decorative stones and boulders, if it only had a bed, a snack bar and a drinks fridge we’d move in. And don’t get us started on the open-air jacuzzi!

All the furniture in the villa has been sourced for its originality, or custom made. The beds are inlaid with shards of seashell, the oversized chairs and sofas are made from what look like recycled railway sleepers, and the long, single-slab dining table is attended by very comfortable and wide seats. This is probably why, when we weren’t swimming or sleeping, we spent so much time here – well, that and the proximity to the drinks fridge and designer kitchen.

All in all, Villa Levi is at the very top end of the Bali villa echelon. For discerning villa aficionados looking for a perfect riverside villa, the search should stop here.

Villa Asada

Villa Asada

Indonesia  »  Bali  »  Candidasa

Returning to Villa Asada after three years we were really pleased by the way in which it has evolved to become a truly magnificent family holiday villa with stunning views over the spectacular Amuk Bay. Since our original visit, the property has changed hands and undergone an extensive upgrade, with an enormous amount of thought put into the provision of guest needs in the form of deep comfort and some great new facilities (including a poolside bar, and a gym).  The Asian food we had was excellent (best satay sauce ever!) – do note though that the villa is a good hour away from major provisioning so whilst local food can be provided at relatively short notice, more complex meals need a little more planning. As such there is a restaurant style house menu and an advanced order menu where 24 hours notice is requested. The chef (included) will help out with all your meal planning though.

Villa Adasa

Villa Adasa

Indonesia  »  Bali  »  Seminyak

I’m moving in! Put it another way, I don’t want to leave Villa Adasa, ever. Within moments of our arrival, the sounds of the gamelan gave way to early Dylan rasping from the Sonos sound system. How did they KNOW he’s this reviewer’s all-time favourite? Mind-reading was clearly second nature for Villa Adasa’s staff, who seemed to know what we wanted before we did, but were just as adept at giving us complete privacy when that was called for too. While this is a great villa for a family as well as for friends/couples sharing, Villa Adasa manages to achieve a rare intimacy that would make it equally appealing to a couple looking to splurge on space. Villa Adasa delights 24/7. Daytime, we were faced with the taxing decision of whether to dive into an ocean of colourful cushions carpeting the double bale (gazebo), relax on the loungers by the pool, strip to bare essentials on the sun-deck above, or remain supine on the myriad sofas in the living pavilion. At sundown it was no contest; the best place to soak up Bali’s famous purple-hued sunset was from the loveseat on the master bedroom loggia. The night-time atmosphere at Villa Adasa is charming, thanks to its clever ambient lighting and comfortable living area. So dining presented us with an equally weighty dilemma: Do we select from the excellent menu and have our accomplished villa chef whip up a five-course meal or seafood barbecue for us, or do we wander out and take our pick from the many world-class restaurants within moments of the villa? We loved hanging out in the huge master bedroom suite and enjoyed the best night’s sleep thanks to a fabulously comfy bed, luxury goose-down duvet and pillows and high thread-count cotton sateen bed linen. The Sonos music system was swish, and being able to control it from our phone and laptop was pretty cool. And it was heaven having such a wonderful library of coffee table books and glossy magazines to browse. All in all, staying here was like breathing pure oxygen — I was on a permanent health-inducing ‘high’ throughout our all-too-short-stay.

Umah Daun

Umah Daun

Indonesia  »  Bali  »  Umalas-Kerobokan

Seriously spacious, perfectly configured and delightfully uncluttered, Umah Daun was an absolute pleasure to stay in.  The gentle curves of the building mimic the contours of the rice terraces, and the ponds that wrap around the ground floor, coupled with the glass doors that fold right back, made us feel like we were part of the scene rather than just looking at it.

Villas of this size can be a little austere and overwhelming, but there is enough colour in the décor and verdant landscape at Umah Daun to make it feel warm and intimate.  Our favourite design feature was the beautifully carved antique door shutters coloured in shades of teal and turquoise, which make stunning features on the white walls, as well as lovely bed heads in the childrens’ rooms.  Bedrooms are large and very comfortable and there are plenty of daybeds and sofas piled high with plump cushions that provide comfortable vantage points for soaking up the views and the peaceful ambiance.  It is such a lovely space, and the staff took such good care of us, that we didn’t really feel the need to go anywhere, but it was good to know that both the beach and Seminyak were easy to reach should we fancy a sunset walk or a meal out.

Casa Brio

Casa Brio

Indonesia  »  Bali  »  Seminyak

Casa Brio was a delightful surprise — everything was so much bigger and better than we anticipated; the photos really don’t do it justice.

We were particularly impressed with manager Pak Yusa and his staff, who made sure we wanted for nothing during our stay from the moment they welcomed us with an ice-cold towel and fresh juice. A special shout out to Wayan the villa chef whose culinary skills ensured we never dined out (even though our old-time favourite, La Lucciola was only a five-minute stroll away). My taste buds still tingle at the thought of his delicately flavoured pomelo and chicken salad, and beautifully presented mahi mahi steaks.

This feels very much like a ‘grown up’ villa — we can easily imagine elegant dinner parties and special family celebrations, and think it’s a great villa for friends to share. Families with toddlers might be concerned about the open staircase and rooftop terrace (not to mention sticky fingers all over the handsome upholstered furniture). But the staff enjoy welcoming children, can supply a pool fence on request, and there’s a large shallow pool area for young ones to enjoy.

Villa Asante

Villa Asante

Indonesia  »  Bali  »  Canggu

Architecturally simple yet eminently comfortable, Villa Asante makes a great holiday pad for a couple of families. The layout is very practical, especially the open sided common areas which flow so well to the pool. It is commendable that the owners have resisted the temptation to build a mega-villa on what is quite a big plot – resulting in much more open space to relax and for kids to run around in. The pool is superb, with shallow sections for toddlers and practical decking which is not slippery even with wet feet (unlike the terrazzo floors). It could do with a little more shade although there are sun umbrellas and a very pleasant balé. Bedrooms are practical and comfortable too, and the bathrooms really are very good, especially the downstairs ones with outside showers and walled gardens. On a recent re-visit we found the (now much more experienced) staff to be superb and the food conjured up by the chef to be tasty, if a little pricey.

Villa Ramadewa

Villa Ramadewa

Indonesia  »  Bali  »  Seminyak

Villa Ramadewa is an absolutely stunning in-town villa which has clearly had much care and attention lavished on it by its owner. The details are delightful as are the staff who we found worked very hard to provide a warm and professional service.

This villa would be ideal for a family given its central location, and if you really can’t escape work whilst on holiday - the study set up and connectivity here is ideal. The bedrooms and bathrooms are exquisite and the pool is a delight. The owner and architect should be commended for creating a real oasis in the centre of Seminyak.

Returning to Ramadewa after three years, we were delighted to find that the villa had been impeccably maintained, the garden is looking colourful and beautiful, and the wine room has been kept fully stocked with an excellent selection of wines, Champagnes and spirits. The owner is, after all, a perfectionist!

Lime Samui - Villa Splash

Lime Samui - Villa Splash

Thailand  »  Koh Samui  »  Nathon

We defy anyone not to be ‘Wowed’ by Lime Samui.  The villa and the views are sensational and instantly create just the right holiday mood.  While we normally tend towards more traditional tropical villa design, we felt that this multi-level, super-modern villa fits its environment perfectly. The fresh, vibrant and uncluttered interiors are exciting and liberating, enhanced by a dramatic sense of space, light and height, courtesy of the villa’s hilltop location.

The living and dining spaces open completely to the wide pool and deck areas making it effortless to drift indoors and out as the mood dictates without ever having to tear yourself away from that view. Bedrooms are all very privately situated, comfortable and spacious, and while each of the bright ensuite bathrooms offer a similar range of fixtures, individual colours and choice of materials make them all delightfully different.  We were sorry not to be able to try out the sumptuous home cinema during our brief stay (there was major power failure on the island), but have vowed to return, as this was a villa luxury not to be missed.  Not sure what our excuse was for not trying the gym – it was certainly well-equipped and even this room doesn’t compromise on the view – but somehow the massage beds won out over the stairmaster!

Lime Samui’s staff team impressed us in all the right ways.  When we had questions they had the answers; when we wanted privacy they disappeared; when we were hungry they presented us with deliciously fresh and tasty meals. There is nowhere you can easily get to from Lime Samui without transport (unless you’re into mountaineering!) but a driver and car is provided and, as far as we were concerned, we had everything that we needed right there and no inclination to leave.

Villa Windu Sari

Villa Windu Sari

Indonesia  »  Bali  »  Seminyak

During our inspection of Villa Windu Sari we were treated to great service and cuisine by the staff. The villa is modern, functional, practical and most importantly comfortable. We felt very at home here. Our visit was with a group of friends and we found Windu Sari well laid out and generous enough for us to be able to enjoy each other’s company or retreat for some privacy and solitude when we wished. The villa would also work well for families.

The Anandita

The Anandita

Indonesia  »  Lombok  »  Tanjung

Anandita is exactly what a ‘destination villa’ should be.  It was lovely to be surrounded by calm seas, very comfortable lodgings and a team of staff who really know what they are doing.  Everything is laid on and we really had no desire go out, feeling so relaxed and content that all we did was swim, eat and sleep in the sun, with a little bit of volleyball and billiards thrown in for good measure.  The beach is ultra safe making it a great place for children to paddle and play; we felt that families would love this place given the choice of activities, and the room layout and bed configuration.  That said, the rooms would work equally well for four couples.

Something that really impressed us was the way the staff stopped what they were doing when we invited them to make up the numbers for a game of volleyball. It is rare to find a villa where the owner has encouraged his staff to go the extra mile to please guests in this way.  To quote from the visitors’ book, “The staff are truly the heart of Anandita”.  The kitchen produces some fine meals, with the emphasis on fresh fish and local produce - but remember that (if you wish to order from the suggestion menu) you need to give a bit of notice when ordering your meals or making your grocery list as the villa is a long way from the nearest shops.  An easy alternative is to opt for the all inclusive meal package offered at the villa which includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea.

Nothing changes very much in Lombok, so when we returned to Villa Anandita for our three-year-update we were delighted to find that everything was very much as it had been, including most of the staff who remembered us from our first visit.  Gusti the manager/activities manager delighted us with his energy and enthusiasm, taking us out for a long bicycle ride across the golf course and along rough tracks through the fields to the traditional market at Tanjung.  Since our last visit, the complement of bicycles has gone up to 13 and the owners have added a spa pavilion with two massage beds (professional therapists will come to the villa to deliver soothing treatments).  We were also pleased to find that the villa now has a WiFi internet connection, so it doesn’t feel quite so detached from the world.  The property has been well maintained but the beach bordering the garden has suffered from a bit of erosion so it has got narrower, but it is still beautiful to look at and you only have to walk a short distance to reach a wider section of sand.  Oh yes, there’s a new international airport in Lombok now, which is further away from the villa, so the journey is longer but you’ll see some gorgeous rural countryside en route.
