Villa Adenium

Villa Adenium

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » Jimbaran

If you like your villas sleek and polished then you are going to love the gleaming surfaces and modern fixtures of Villa Adenium. I found myself constantly sliding my hands over the glossy furnishings and marvelling at the smooth surfaces under foot. Constructed in 2006, the villa has been beautifully maintained and everything feels so shiny and new, it could have been built just yesterday. The hard angles of the design were a little sharp for our taste, but the effect was softened in the evenings with the gentle glow of down-lights, hurricane lamps and wonderful wall lights stencilled from black steel. Views were limited from the ground floor and the pool takes up most of the outdoor space, leaving little room for a garden, but it is still a great spot for lounging, especially while sprawled across cushions in the balé. The views were better upstairs and our favourite spot was on the veranda, where we could ensconce ourselves in the comfy planters chairs, with feet resting on the foot stools – perfectly positioned for a sundowner!

Bedrooms are in the style of contemporary hotel suites, comfortable, minimalist and immaculate – if you’re looking for a rustic homely vibe this is not really the villa for you! With three floors to spread out across, the villa has plenty of space, and the well-equipped basement is an added bonus, especially for ping pong masters such as ourselves. The deliciously fluffy breakfast pancakes served with ornately carved tropical fruit and excellent coffee also deserve a mention.

Villa Aiko

Villa Aiko

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » Jimbaran

This luxury hillcrest villa packs a punch with its panoramic views across Jimbaran Bay. We soaked up the vista from Aiko’s infinity pool, second-level terraces, enormous find-me-if-you-can bed – even from our bathtub-for-two!

If you’re looking for traditional Bali-style architecture, Villa Aiko may not be your first choice. But while resolutely city-chic contemporary in design, the villa makes abundant use of natural materials in its construction - think reclaimed ironwood and river-stone walls, teakwood floors, Benkirai-wood decking and ironwood shingle roof. And the essence of Bali is evident in the charming and attentive-but-discreet staff.

The villa manager/executive chef Putu was an absolute treasure. He was completely unfazed by my vegetarian request and created a memorable dinner – spring rolls, pumpkin and basil soup, beetroot and orange appetiser, and Portobello mushrooms en croute with perfectly cooked vegetables and the best mashed potatoes in Bali. And his Eggs Florentine  – the egg poached to perfection, the Hollandaise cancelling days of dedicated Pilates practice – was a fabulous way to kick-start the morning. No wonder some guests stay away from Jimbaran Bay’s seafood restaurants and choose instead to eat in every day, as the visitor’s book attests.

We think Aiko would be a great villa for large family groups. There are so many independent seating areas to break away to for some peace and quiet, and it’s great to find a library in a Bali villa; we really appreciated the wide choice of books. Though all four bedrooms have king-size beds  – no twins – there’s a single bed discreetly designed into the foot of each bed. We thought the fourth bedroom might be best for kids (who tend not to be so view-hungry) as the outlook is partly blocked by the guest pavilion and spiral staircase. One note of caution: there are steep drops from the pool and terraces but, thankfully for parents, glass barriers line both second floor terraces.

Villa Bayuh Sabbha

Villa Bayuh Sabbha

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

We gasped with delight when we first clapped eyes on the views at Bayuh Sabbha – they really are jaw dropping. And the pool, or should I say pools, are magnificently placed for soaking in the splendour that lies beyond. There’s no quibbling the ‘infinity’ tag attached to these pools! Although the views are spectacular at any time of the day or night, we particularly enjoyed waking up early to catch a glimpse of magical Mount Agung before it became shrouded in cloud. Swimming in the pools at sunset, watching the clouds turn red, the stars illuminating the inky sky, and the lights twinkling along the coastline was also very special. And as you fall asleep each night, it is to the rhythmic sound of the omnipresent waves thudding at the rocks below.

The two residences could be booked separately (with shared staff), but there’s no doubt that the villa suits big gatherings best, and the staff are used to hosting weddings and other special events. The huge amount of space means that everyone can always find their own little corner. We particularly liked the two-bedroom residence; it was very private and the rooms had the best sea views.

Whilst the villa staff responded to our requests and were friendly, they didn’t show the initiative or finesse that we would expect from a villa of this size, presentation and price range. There were plenty of butlers (and other staff members) around, but it seemed the cook did most of the work, including waiting on our table! Sunshades were only put up when we went out to use the pool, and there seemed to be a lot of cleaning and maintenance work going on during our stay. Despite this, we loved the villa and, for the views alone, would certainly go back.

Villa Indah Manis

Villa Indah Manis

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

We really enjoyed our stay at Villa Indah Manis which means “beautiful” and “sweet”. It is a very pretty villa, nicely laid out, with exceptional facilities, boldly coloured bedrooms and well-furnished living and dining spaces. The setting is tremendous for views and privacy (not so great for those seeking exciting night-life or retail therapy) and the staff were absolutely delightful, they could not have been more helpful. The food we had was beautifully presented. The villa has a more homely intimate feel than many we have seen in Bali, clearly targeting families - for which it is well suited.

Villa Bulan Madu

Villa Bulan Madu

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

Villa Bulan Madu is a wonderfully romantic little villa.  The setting is very pleasant and, given how open the rooms are, very private. The villa shares the same owner, staff and kitchens as its neighbour, the five-bedroomed Villa Indah Manis, so has the benefit of a large staff who discreetly disappear next door until summoned. For us, the staff could not have been more helpful and the food we had was beautifully presented.

Villa Jamalu

Villa Jamalu

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » Jimbaran

This villa rocks! We loved our stay here – one night wasn’t enough time to sample all the facilities. There really is something for everyone: a gym; yoga space; massage room; pool lounge; PlayStation and great stereo systems and cinemas throughout. There are also plenty of spots to relax and sunbathe by the fabulously deep saltwater pool (I had to equalize when diving to the bottom of the deep end!), or snuggle up with a good book and enjoy the ocean view.

The owners of this villa obviously have kids – we know that from the name but also because this is one of the best-equipped villas for children we have seen. Apart from the PlayStation 3 there are numerous games and toys to keep them entertained – even children-sized pool cues! And a safety fence can be erected around the pool to give parents peace of mind and save them from having to double as lifeguards. And with three home cinemas, plus three more TV’s there’s never any fights for the remote!

Jamalu works for all ages, and as well as making a great family holiday villa it’s a wicked party pad; the Bose stereo system links to speakers in all the living areas and outdoor speakers by the pool and on the first floor terrace. The villa manager has been with the villa since the start, and the chef is very accomplished.

This contemporary property may not be suit those looking for a traditional Balinese experience. However all the interiors are furnished very tastefully in the best quality materials and fabrics creating a very comfortable environment.

The Longhouse

The Longhouse

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » Jimbaran

The Longhouse is full of surprises; it’s so big that it takes a good day to orientate yourself. We stayed at the villa with another couple and kept losing each other! In the process of searching for your fellow guests you’ll find hidden atriums with ponds and water cascades, and daybeds strategically positioned in private corners of the steep terraced gardens to capture the view. Kids will have a ball exploring this place and playing hide-and-seek. The villa is great for entertaining and as a fun party venue, especially with the karaoke machine in the home theatre. The whole place is wired for sound, including the air-conditioned gym, which is equipped with a treadmill, Swiss Pilates balls and yoga mats. The staff can arrange for a yoga or Pilates instructor to come in for personal sessions, and spa therapists are also on call to administer treatments in the private spa room (costs for these services are not included in villa rate) – complete with two massage beds and a bath.

The staff are amazing. They went to Kedonganan fish market for us and bought fresh prawns and snapper for a really good price, which the chef served up as a seafood feast in the comfort of the villa. If you’re eating at the villa and you fancy something that’s not on the menu, the staff will happily provision for you for a small fee. There’s an impressive wine cellar too! Finally – something to enjoy at the end of the day – the home theatre is like a real cinema, one of the best we’ve seen in Bali.
