Puri Tirta - Villa Alamanda

Puri Tirta - Villa Alamanda

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua-Tanjung Benoa

For the traveller who loves water sports and the boundless facilities offered by the Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa area then this villa is a real steal. We found the garden and pool area to be more than adequate for our needs and in fact it was just far enough away from the sounds of the reckless types who race up and down the harbour on a high tide on their rented jetskis – something that can be irksome in the two Puri Tirta Villas that front directly onto the water.

The butler was brilliant and anticipated our every move, even getting the flat tyre on our rented motorcycle fixed while we lay by the pool. Make sure you get out on the speedboat for a run around the harbour. It’s cheap as chips for a couple ofhoursand an interesting take on what’s going on with the new (Oct. 2012) road-across-the-water construction as well as an insight into the colourful world of the fishing fleet anchored at the port. The same goes for taking the kayaks through the mangroves – a peacefully serene way to start the day.

Puri Tirta - Villa Cempaka

Puri Tirta - Villa Cempaka

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua-Tanjung Benoa

It was so nice to find a villa on the harbour side of Tanjung Benoa, hidden away from the hotels and resorts, the jet skis and speed boats. The modern Villa Cempaka will make a family feel very much at home and what a delight it was to learn that it has its own speedboat (at extra cost but inexpensive and well worth the money), so make sure you head out for a spin. We went for an early morning jaunt around the harbour to have a look at all the fishing vessels and ferries at the port. There are also four kayaks for cruising through the mangrove forest; the waters are shallow and still, making this a safe activity for families. When you’re not out exploring the neighbourhood, the pool deck at the villa is a truly peaceful place to spend the day, while the rooftop gazebo is a great spot for sunbathing, reading a book or snuggling up with each other. The staff were great, very attentive when we needed them but leaving us alone when we wanted privacy.

Puri Tirta - Villa Selamanya

Puri Tirta - Villa Selamanya

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua-Tanjung Benoa

Villa Selamanya is a beautifully serene place and we enjoyed a real mix of (gentle) adventure and relaxation during our stay. After watching the sunset over the horizon from the waterfront pool we enjoyed trying out the local restaurants (Japanese and Italian - both pretty damn fine) and one morning we took the villa’s kayaks out for a long leisurely paddle around the harbour and through the mangroves filled with birdlife and fish. On a low tide the estuary empties out and the exposed sand-flats bring wading birds and locals out in search of seafood. It’s a great place to explore. We often saw the kids from the neighbouring villa out and about on the sand-flats with their parents chasing crabs and other marine critters, so the location’s obviously a winner with families.

For a change of pace, just head a kilometre up the road in the villa car and you are in watersports heaven. Ask the villa manager about the discount deal Selamanya has with one of the local companies – he can also arrange anything from island tours to deep sea fishing trips.

But it wasn’t all ‘busy, busy’. Truth be told, for most of the day we simply sprawled out on the sun loungers or in the shade of the balé bengong and swam in the pool, it just couldn’t have been any better.

All in all, versatility is key here.

Puri Tirta - Villa Sunset

Puri Tirta - Villa Sunset

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua-Tanjung Benoa

We know that the Nusa Dua/Tanjung Benoa area has a reputation as a holiday destination that suits all tastes: from sun-worshippers whose aim is to remain as horizontal as possible for as long as possible, to adrenaline freaks who care only for the thrill of a jet ski engine between their legs, a parachute strapped to their back, or being towed on an inflatable rubber contraption behind a speedboat at Mach 1.

We kind of fit into both groups but we don’t like spending too much time surrounded by hordes of others who do the same and that’s why it was beyond good to find Villa Sunset on the sleepy side of Benoa Harbour. We felt like we had the whole of Bali to ourselves (apart from at high tide when the jet skis came calling for an hour or so) but on a low tide the silence is deafening.

We loved it. For a couple of hours we could jump on said jet skis and get our adrenaline fix but afterwards it was straight back to the pool for some serious atrophy time. So little to do and so much time within which to do it!

One thing not to miss is a kayak trip around the bay and the mangroves (the villa has four for guest use) and, at least once, rent the resident speedboat for a spin around the harbour – early morning is best when all the birds are waking up and the sun is not yet hot. Also, go for a wander along the sand on low tide and visit one of the turtle hatcheries just up the beach. If you have kids they will love it – especially having a photo taken with a nine-foot python draped around their necks.

Bidadari Cliffside Estate

Bidadari Cliffside Estate

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua-Tanjung Benoa

Remote but perfectly formed, this villa is a great recipe for a pure getaway; just for you and the people you have chosen to spend your holiday with – as it should be. Depending on how far you have travelled to get here, Bali may feel like the end of the Earth so, having come this far, why not drive the extra few kilometres to be right on the edge of it all at Bidadari. We welcomed the isolation and lack of modern distractions like boutiques and bars. Staying ‘at home’ all day and all night was a delight as we chilled out, looked after by a tremendous staff, who were always on hand to top up an empty glass or empty tummy. The home theatre has a lovely large telly and a decent DVD collection, but as good as it was it couldn’t compete with the heavenly views. We highly recommend waking early for sunrise; not only a spectacular show of nature but also an inspiring way to start another beautiful Bali day.

The chef prepared a lunch for us of fish cooked with turmeric and coconut, prawns grilled on the BBQ with garlic and lime, and some traditional Balinese salads, which was all superb. And at dinner time, he massaged a leg of New Zealand lamb to perfection over the barbecue’s naked flames. Sitting down to eat, we felt like characters out of a Goldilocks story because the oversized chairs were large enough to seat the largest of bears. Everything in this villa was brand spanking new and of the highest quality, and all the soft furnishings were super-comfy – we slept like angels.

The Shanti Residence

The Shanti Residence

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua-Tanjung Benoa

We’d heard some pretty tasty things about The Shanti Residence, so we arrived with great expectations. And this is what we found: the beds were soft, the sky was blue, the sun warm and the hospitality generous. After a delicious night’s sleep in a regal bed, followed by a sumptuous breakfast, the pool and its sun loungers were about as far as we managed to get for the lion’s share of the day. The staff were professional and, more importantly, readily on hand to bring us cold drinks, lunch and complimentary afternoon tea as we lay there soaking up the sounds of birdlife and views of the distant horizon. That night the kitchen produced a particularly tasty meal for us, which left us fit to bursting. Yes, cloaked in privacy and surrounded by greenery, this stunning villa nigh on forces total relaxation from its guests. Overlooking the sea, far, far away from the crowds, with three pools, a home cinema, superb staff and a tantalising menu of foods and wines, The Shanti Residence requires no leaving. So, bring your favourite books, toys, sunscreen and lover, and get ready for the stay of stays.

Villa Waru

Villa Waru

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua-Tanjung Benoa

Safe environment, spacious garden and loads of different living spaces make Villa Waru an absolute dream for large family groups, especially as kids are so well catered for here. The garden is truly enchanting; full of little artistic touches; secreted statues, brightly painted doorways, timber carvings and stone gargoyles. Adventurous kids will love these surroundings and there’s plenty to keep them amused inside too; big TV, DVDs, pool table, board games etc. For extra peace of parents’ minds, a lifeguard can even attend at the villa (extra charge).

With such a generous scattering of living and dining space, everyone will be able to find their own favourite corner. We loved the Gekko Suite’s intimate living space tucked far to the back of the property. Waru’s two residences are joined by a pathway through the garden making it ideal for two families (or even three) holidaying together, and an excellent location for hosting special events.

We thought that the villa staff did a great job; Wayan was certainly a good cook, preparing meals from an extensive menu of Indonesian and western dishes (provisions on guest account at cost plus a 25% service fee). Waru has a permanent staff of seven, but more are brought in when the villa is fully occupied.
