Come sunset, we walked out the gate and strolled literally 40 paces to the lagoon-side warung (café), had a quick beer then crossed the swing bridge to the sand and watched the late-monsoon-storm tossed seas try to scare us with their menace. All very dramatic, but a lovely way to end the day.

This is the Bali beach house we wish we owned. The Beach Club Villa has a simple open-plan layout and no-fuss design aesthetic that lends itself to hanging out with friends and letting the kids run loose without having to yell “Don’t touch!” every few minutes.

Although we were on vacation and tempted to sleep in, the lure of watching the sunrise from the bedroom balcony proved too tempting (also a great place to check out the surf). We were in the ocean at 7am, well before the masses arrived, and while I manoeuvred beginner shoulder rights my husband hung with the big boys, taking steeper drops. The Beach Club Villa is the perfect spot for two couples who love to surf and explore the unpasteurized side of Bali or for families who can’t get enough of the beach (but want the luxury of air-conditioned living when the tropical heat gets too much).

The villa includes guest membership of the Canggu Club, the island’s best sports and leisure venue, so for a change of scenery housekeeper Raka organised a driver (extra cost) to take us over there for a work-out in the air conditioned gym and some laps in the 25m pool.

We loved the breakfast Raka made for us on our first morning, so we asked for the same again every day (giving her cash to buy ingredients): veggies for juicing, granola with honey and yogurt, fresh locally grown fruit including papaya, rambutan and watermelon, and a strong batch of French press kopi (Bali coffee). The Beji’s staff were a real pleasure and made our stay very easy – the chef produced great food, the waiters and waitresses were discreetly attentive and the villa manager very keen to assist. They made the villa particularly hard to leave when it was time to head home!
