Canggu villas in Bali, Indonesia

Canggu has become the collective name for a number of villages (including Berawa, Tegal Gundul, Tiyingtukul, Pererenan, Nelayan and Babakan), which, until very recently, could still be described as a sleepy coastal locale. It's now one of Bali's coolest districts.

Here, amongst the rice fields which extend all the way down to the beach, you will not only find some of the most luxurious private residences on the island, but also a great selection of eclectic restaurants, cafes, bakeries, boutiques and beach bars – especially along Jalan Batu Bolong, which runs right down to the beach. Popular spots include Finns Beach Club, Old Mans, La Laguna, The Lawn and Ji @ Bale Sutra.

Canggu is also an area that most surfers will know about, with reef swells that are larger than those you will find further south in Kuta and Seminyak. Swimming isn’t advisable however as the rips can be dangerous, but there are plenty of other things to do from horseback riding to cooking classes. Finns Recreation Club (for which many holiday villas in the area include guest membership) offers social and leisure amenities, including Splash waterpark, Bounce trampoline centre, Strike bowling, a state-of-the art gym, a 25m swimming pool and a tennis and squash centre.

Along the coast to the north of Canggu is Pura Tanah Lot; a sea temple perched high on a craggy wave-lashed rock and probably the most photographed sight in Bali. Sophisticated Seminyak, a few kilometres south of Canggu, lays claim to the highest concentration of independent fine-dining restaurants on the island, including Sarong, La Lucciola and Ku Dé Ta, together with a wide choice of chic cocktail bars, exciting nightclubs, lavish spas and elegant boutiques.

Villa Kemala

Villa Kemala

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

First impressions are always important and we received quite a welcome at Villa Kemala, with canapés and passion fruit juice enjoyed on the beautiful hanging terrace. Once we had settled in we were served cappuccino, homemade cakes and excellent, buttery cookies – quite a treat after a long journey.

Only completed a month before our stay (November 2012) we were lucky enough to be amongst the first guests to enjoy the pristine, sparkling newness of Villa Kemala. Rich in details, it’s clear that an enormous amount of time, energy and thought has gone into creating this elegant and luxurious haven. No corners have been cut, fittings are the sleekest, linens are the finest, artwork is stylish, iPod docks are in every room, and artefacts have been thoughtfully placed to avoid any sense of clutter. Gorgeous furnishings include sleek mosquito nets and throws in the upstairs bedrooms, and we were impressed by the small but carefully chosen selection of books and board games.

Villa Kemala seems to have all the bases covered, a peaceful and picturesque setting not far from the beach, stunning pool area and gardens, plus a spa balé for the girls and a pool room for the boys. The staff are fabulous, and took very good care of us without intruding on our space.

Villa Kipi

Villa Kipi

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

We found Villa Kipi to be a modern, practical villa in an excellent close-to-the-beach location. We thought that the size of the rooms and the number of indoor and outdoor living and dining areas was delightfully generous for a four-bedroom property, and even if it was filled with a group of eight guests there would still be plenty of spots for individuals to lose themselves.

This is quite a grown-up villa – possibly best suited to a group of adults - but would also work well for a family despite not being specifically family-friendly. For example, the outdoor area features an extended timber deck around the pool in place of a lawn so even though it is large there’s not a true garden for kids to run around in.

The colonial-style furnishings are lovely; the bathrooms are stylish, light and airy, and a TV in each bedroom ensures yet more privacy for folks who want to escape from their companions. Our favourite room was the open-air lounge on the upper level. We also enjoyed our time at the beach (albeit rather a scruffy section of the beach) without hawkers, touts, or overcrowding spoiling the party. And it was just a three-minute walk back to the villa for a shower and a laze beside the pool. Brilliant! At sunset we returned to the beach for a few beers at a small and popular open-air bar.

The staff at Villa Kipi are helpful and cheery and while they aren’t the most highly trained of professionals, they know how to make your holiday fun. There is a superb selection of home-cooked delights on the suggestion menu, and breakfast is really good too, especially with the sound of the crashing surf just over the way.

Villa Levi

Villa Levi

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Levi is without a doubt one of the best villas we have stayed in – and we have stayed in a few! Everything is so very comfortable and the bathroom in the master suite is beyond description… but we’ll try. Open to the jungly riverside and brimming with plants, decorative stones and boulders, if it only had a bed, a snack bar and a drinks fridge we’d move in. And don’t get us started on the open-air jacuzzi!

All the furniture in the villa has been sourced for its originality, or custom made. The beds are inlaid with shards of seashell, the oversized chairs and sofas are made from what look like recycled railway sleepers, and the long, single-slab dining table is attended by very comfortable and wide seats. This is probably why, when we weren’t swimming or sleeping, we spent so much time here – well, that and the proximity to the drinks fridge and designer kitchen.

All in all, Villa Levi is at the very top end of the Bali villa echelon. For discerning villa aficionados looking for a perfect riverside villa, the search should stop here.

Villa Luwih

Villa Luwih

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

With a double-pool cascade among its many splendours, Villa LuWih is one of the most welcoming and beautiful villas we’ve escaped to in a long while.  Arriving late at night in a slightly dishevelled state, we were quickly restored to a relaxed frame of mind after being met by LuWih’s fresh-faced, smiling team who had prepared our airport transfer service, rooms and snacks exactly as we’d arranged in advance.  The sights and sounds of the night also provide a restorative ambiance, with the villa’s top-floor pool trickling into the big pool below, its soothing lighting and the whooshing symphony of the sea beyond.

After a peaceful sleep in our canopied beds, we awoke and stepped out into a bedazzling scene.  The sparkling green landscape Bali is famous for was in full view all around us, and if we looked further in the distance we could see a serpent’s tail of movement in the sea – a group of surfers riding the waves.

With bedrooms spread evenly over the three levels and a mix of king- and twin-bedded rooms, a group of couples or extended families will find it easy to organise themselves.  Those wanting more seclusion may find the two main-floor bedrooms a bit lacking in privacy, with the doors opening out to the dining and living areas.  But this is a minor quibble, since with their own ensuite bathrooms complete with double bathtubs it’s easy enough to leave the world behind once the doors are slid shut and the curtains drawn.  And they’re both just a quick hop from the big pool.

Now, about these pools … Staying at a hotel with two pools is always impressive, but staying at a private villa with two pools is truly an indulgent delight.  It was a first for us, and we had no excuses for not doing our daily laps.  The shallow section for kids in the larger pool is a thoughtful touch, too.

With so many staff here, our only concern before arrival was having too many people around!  We were well taken care of, certainly, but never felt overwhelmed or over-serviced during our stay – they seem to have the balance of attention and discretion just right. Being pampered to the hilt is easy to get accustomed to.  LuWih, by the way, means “big” and “luxurious”. Leaving the villa was traumatic.

Villa Mako

Villa Mako

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Mako has a beautiful energy, probably because so much love has gone into the authentic Dutch Colonial design and antique furnishings. Unlike other villas that are monikered ‘colonial style’, we almost felt the need to don safari suits and complain loudly in Dutch about the damned heat! Conversely, the 21st century has a strong showing in the kitchen, bathrooms, TV room and dining areas. Comfort is by no means excluded in the desire for authenticity. The garden is shaded by a large grove of coconut trees providing tropical poolside relaxation you won’t want to leave. The villa’s rural village location allows you to interact with the friendly local people simply by ducking out the gate at the bottom of the garden.

The seafood dinner, prepared for six of us at short notice by the cook was fantastic, beautifully presented with faultless service. The 36 cushions on the huge antique plantation sofa in the hall had us swimming in softness, while the kitchen just cries out to be cooked in. There are see-through cupboards, acres of bench space and a collection of tableware and glasses for every occasion and tipple. The lay-z boy chair in the media room may cause a few fights to break out, so play nice.

Villa Mana

Villa Mana

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

We absolutely loved Villa Mana. Not only were the views amazing, its openness liberating and the design super-chic – an architectural dream – but it was also very comfortable, with so many places to lie back and relax, even when the villa is full. Sofas and loungers seemed supersized, and were the perfect accompaniments to sleeping and reading or languidly watching the farmers hard at work in their paddy fields.

We enjoyed bathing in the master bathroom with its glass roof, river-stone walls and smooth circular tub that’s big enough for two. We felt the villa was excellently set up for the extended family, large groups or even a couple of families (but do note that using the showers in the ground floor ensuites involves climbing into the tubs, which might not be ideal for some elderly guests).

The twin bedroom is conveniently located opposite the entertainment room, which is a big self-contained space with squashy sofas that could be used as much as a playroom (there’s a box full of toys plus a pool table) as a home cinema room (plenty of DVDs supplied). Sliding doors open from here onto the enclosed rear garden where there’s a meandering 2ft-deep pool that can be enjoyed by little paddlers.

The lawn at the bottom of the garden is encircled by paddy fields and felt like the stage of a Shakespearean theatre. The garden is enclosed (parents sigh of relief), and kids will just love it here. Villa Mana's staff aim to please, and they succeed. The chef is excellent and the manager is efficient and knowledgeable. With the kitchen being at the centre of the villa, we were always aware of the staff and felt that total privacy was slightly compromised (at least on the ground floor).

Villa Manis

Villa Manis

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Manis is a beautiful, quiet and peaceful villa, yet at the same time we could just imagine it to be the perfect venue for a wedding or a party.  We spent a lazy afternoon by the pool being lavished with ice cold drinks and fresh fruit. Wonderful!  The only time we moved was for our massage in the on-site spa, and then again when it was time for dinner.  Being right next to a mass of rice fields is a rare treat these days, even in Pererenan, and at night as we sat on the wraparound balcony of the enormous master bedroom, all we could hear was a croaking serenade of frogs under a wonderfully starry sky.  The delightful staff took great care of us and left us wanting for nothing.  The chef is a bit of a genius, just quietly, and amazed us with some delicious meals.  It was a real pleasure to eat at Villa Manis.
