Chaweng villas in Koh Samui, Thailand

Chaweng is the vibrant heart of Koh Samui’s thriving tourist industry and home to the longest beach on the island. Its 7km stretch of powdery white sand, palm-fringed shoreline and crystal clear blue waters have been attracting travellers since the island emerged from its sleepy rural past in the 1980s. The island’s international airport is merely 10 minutes away.

Chaweng’s coastal stretch is bordered by rocky headlands at either end. To the north are coastal reefs and the tiny island of Koh Matlam with shallow waters, ideal for families with small children.

At the southern end towards Lamai, a shorter section of beach called Chaweng Noi (Little Chaweng) is less crowded but also offers beachfront action and great swimming close to the shore. There are plenty of things to do in Chaweng almost all year-round, such as windsurfing, jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking and taking rides on banana boats.

The road running parallel to the beach has developed as a popular lifestyle destination. A holiday in Chaweng offers access to ample clubs, shops, restaurants and nightlife, including the upmarket Central Festival shopping centre.

Just to the north is the area of Choeng Mon, where you will find many of the island’s most expensive and exclusive private villas, as well as 5-star resorts. A perfect crescent in shape, Choeng Mon Bay and its neighbouring coves also boast powdery white sand beaches perfect for lazy days spent soaking up the sun.

Baan Fan Noi

Baan Fan Noi

Thailand » Koh Samui » Chaweng

From the moment we set our bags down at Baan Fan Noi, we felt relaxed and ready to go with the flow – almost letting the villa’s convivial layout dictate what we should do next. From enjoying a swim in the16m pool to feeling tension lift in the jacuzzi and then falling asleep over a book on the comfy daybeds in the courtyard between the kitchen and living room, we were able to completely switch off. Nothing is too much trouble for the villa manager, Khun Muan, who quickly popped into town on his scooter when we needed something, even before we could ask the favour.

The villa’s elevated position meant we enjoyed views of not only the bay between Chaweng and Choeng Mon, but also the tiny island of Koh Matlang in the distance and the airport to the other side. Rather than being a disturbance, we found it fascinating watching the airplanes taking off and landing, with only minor noise disturbance as the villa is well to the side of the flight path.
The bedrooms are exceptionally comfortable, with down bedding, silent air-conditioning and subdued lighting. Leaving the blinds open at night meant we could see the lights twinkling along the coast below and could even enjoy a firework show being staged at Chaweng Beach. It also meant waking early to a beautiful sunrise. If you’d prefer to sleep in, you can of course draw the blinds – the aroma of coffee brewing will wake you up in time for breakfast, so no need to set your alarm. The fresh air made us hungry, so we enjoyed our continental breakfast, including a platter of tropical fruit, as a perfect way to start the day. From the breakfast table, we watched yachts and fishing boats coming and going and the island starting its day, knowing we had nothing much planned, other than another relaxing day at the elegant Baan Fan Noi.
