Lipa Noi villas in Koh Samui, Thailand

One of Koh Samui’s best-kept secrets, Lipa Noi boasts three kilometres of curved white sandy beach smack in the middle of Koh Samui's west coast. With its local village ambiance and laid-back beachside vibe, Lipa Noi makes an ideal destination for family holidays or a special getaway with friends. If stunning sunsets, calm crystal waters, fine sands, swaying coconut palms and a selection of exceptional private luxury villas tick your boxes, then take a closer look at Lipa Noi.

The picturesque sandy beach here is one of the best on the island for kids, and there’s plenty of shade from the coconut palms lining its edge. Calm and very shallow water means year-round safe swimming and a good choice of watersports, and although Lipa Noi is only five minutes from the mainland ferry pier, it is the most serene and untouched beach on Koh Samui’s west coast. For a carefree family holiday, Lipa Noi is hard to beat.

You’ll find plenty of places to eat, both on and off the beach and a massage under the shade of a palm tree, with views across the island-speckled waters of the Gulf of Siam, is easy to fix. Lipa Noi is also close to a number of popular Koh Samui attractions, including the island’s main waterfalls at Namuang, the Magic Buddha Garden high in the hills, and Paradise Park Farm, a family friendly adventure with a hilltop pool, animal and bird feeding and amazing views.

Although Lipa Noi and the west coast of Koh Samui is better known for its peace, quiet and exclusivity, it’s also home to one of Samui's trendiest beach clubs, the Nikki Beach Resort, which draws visitors from across the globe.

With some of Koh Samui’s most sought-after accommodation located close to the beach and in the lush forested hills above the ocean, a Lipa Noi luxury private villa holiday is guaranteed to deliver total rest and relaxation.

Baan Ora Chon

Baan Ora Chon

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Ora Chorn is huge with a very dignified refined feel. It is in a wonderful setting – one of the very best in Koh Samui, if not Asia. We loved the open airy feel with so much space (there is room for another two or three bedrooms). The villa has a tranquil but serious vibe which, if we were really picky, would benefit from some warm touches to make it more homely. Don’t get us wrong, it is still eminently comfortable with huge bedrooms, great bathrooms, fabulous views and an extremely private and peaceful setting. We particularly liked the poolside sala for dinner: great views and a lovely evening temperature (beware of the slippy floor though). The staff were lovely; the villa manageress in particular, who, once relaxed, proved to be a real character – confident, efficient, friendly and full of useful information. Her English is excellent (the other staff were average) and she was very determined to make our stay enjoyable – which she easily succeeded in doing.

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Rattana Thep

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Rattana Thep

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

It's rare to feel the spirit of history on a modern-day holiday island like Koh Samui, especially staying in a brand new, luxury villa. But Baan Rattana Thep soon transported us back to the colonial era. The architecture and fittings may be state-of-the-art, and certainly add to the extravagant experience, but it’s the carefully chosen art and artefacts that inspire you, bringing to mind learned pursuits such as poetry, philosophical conversation and an appreciation of fine wine.

There's plenty of space and opportunity for less cerebral activities too. You can fritter away the days lazing by the pool, lounging in the garden or relaxing on your bedroom terrace just enjoying the surroundings. Add to that TVs in virtually every room, hooked up to satellite and DVDs players, not to mention a villa-wide sound system, and you're never without options for holiday distraction.

It's unlikely you will want to venture out for meals either with a private chef on hand to prepare a range of delectable Thai and western dishes from a varied suggestion menu (ingredients on guest account). But if you do get itchy taste buds, the villa manageress will happily recommend options both in nearby Lipa Noi or Taling Ngam, even further afield if you don't mind the drive.

Staying within a development, albeit in high-walled privacy, offers opportunities to socialise with the neighbours and the beachside dining sala (gazebo) is great place to entertain. A heavy set of wooden gates actually connects through to the villa next door and renting two of the Dhevatara Cove properties would definitely create an impressive private wedding or party venue.

Baan Rattana Thep is a versatile property with a character of its own that makes you feel fortunate from the moment you enter its bounteous grounds.

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Samlarn

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Samlarn

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

We struggled to tear ourselves away from the comfortable sun loungers at Baan Samlarn, except to take a cooling dip in the pool every so often, or a stroll on the beach with its postcard-perfect view at sunset. As dusk approaches, the villa puts on her party dress. Candles are lit by the staff who, though almost unseen, are always there when you need them, tea-lights are dotted across the lawn and lanterns are lit. Cocktails or a barbecue at the sala are a perfect way to welcome the sunset.

The villa emits a warm glow and delicious smells waft from the kitchen as dinner is prepared. The villa's in-house chef is talented, and has no problem preparing special requests. With fishermen strolling past on the beach, fresh seafood is a regular feature on the menu.

Samui offers plenty to do if active holidays are your thing, but if your goal is pure rest and relaxation, Baan Samlarn is a great choice: from the comfortable, peaceful bedrooms, to the double-bed-sized pool loungers and the assortment of lounge areas, you’ll easily find a place to rejuvenate, ready for another day of doing as you please. But don't be tempted to sleep away too much of your time when there's so much else to enjoy at the villa – Khun Fon will be happy to arrange for a professional masseuse to deliver a treatment either at the beach sala, or in the comfort of your room.

Although the ferry pier is only 200m away, it's no bother; you'll only hear a short horn toot as boats depart and dock. In fact, it adds interest to what would otherwise be an uneventful, albeit pretty beach scene.

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Tao Talay

Dhevatara Cove - Baan Tao Talay

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

As much as Samui has to offer, we struggled to pull ourselves away from Baan Tao Talay’s comfortable terry cloth covered sun loungers, except perhaps for a dip in the pool every so often, or to take a stroll on the beach with its postcard-perfect sunset views. As dusk approaches, the villa puts on her party dress. Candles are lit by the staff who, though for the most part unseen, are always there when you need them. Tea-lights are dotted across the lawn, lanterns lit and cocktails prepared: we highly recommend Khun Joy's Mojito, bursting with mint and lime, and a perfect way to welcome the sunset.

The villa emits a warm glow, and delicious smells waft from the kitchen as dinner is prepared for us to enjoy in the beachside sala. The villa's talented in-house chef has no problem preparing special requests. His repertoire of vegetarian dishes is vast and he even makes his own tofu. With seafood literally on the doorstep – bought from the fishermen who walk the beach – fish is a regular item on the menu.

Oh the beds! If your goal is to get some rest during your stay at Tao Talay, you won't be disappointed. Dressed in crisp white linen, a duvet to snuggle into and with both foam and down pillows, these beds will guarantee you wake refreshed each morning, ready for another day of doing as you please. We also admired how silent the air-con is. But don't be tempted to sleep away too much of your time when there's so much else to enjoy at the villa. Should you fancy a massage, ask Khun Joy to arrange a professional masseuse and relax with a treatment either at the beach sala, or in the comfort of your room.

Although the ferry pier is only 200m away, it's no bother, and you'll only hear a short horn toot as boats depart and dock. In fact, it adds interest to what would otherwise be an uneventful, albeit pretty beach scene.
