Natai Beach-Phang Nga
Upon arrival at the palatial Villa Viva, set grandly along the stunning sands of Natai, we felt we'd stumbled into an emperor's summer palace by mistake. Indeed, with dragons and other mythological beings standing guard and majestic black-tile peak-roofed pavilions set around a
courtyard, the villa does evoke a bit of Chinese Imperial-era splendour. But any image from days gone by ends there – this is a high-tech, avant-garde marvel of a holiday home. The only hint of disrepair we saw was the rickety old pier beyond the villa grounds along the beach, a relic from the region's heady tin-mining days that provides a nice visual contrast to the villa's flawless sheen and a real sense of place.
Everywhere we turned we were met with a host of luxurious touches from the champagne bucket and flutes in each bedroom to the terrazzo bathtubs where you may select two waterfall effects. Although our cooking skills are far from gourmet, we had to stop for several minutes to take in the kitchen and all its shimmering appliances. It seemed almost a crime that, because of the excellent meals prepared by the villa's Thai chef, we left this glittering, grand space largely unused. Viva is certainly a place to soothe the senses; with a full spa treatment area in the master suite and two bedroom pavilions featuring their own massage beds (in-villa massage sessions may be arranged for an extra charge). We were well pampered from start to finish, with a line of staff welcoming us with cold towels and drinks in hand, then later providing a romantic bed turn-down service. Meals were served with crisp efficiency and warm smiles. For those who can afford to splash out on Villa Viva, this is an indulgent treat indeed!
