Seminyak villas in Bali, Indonesia

North west of Bali’s international airport, coastal Seminyak is Bali’s established late-night party land, laying claim to the highest concentration of independent fine-dining restaurants and beach clubs on the island, including Ku Dé Ta, Potato Head, Cocoon, La Lucciola, Sarong, Métis and Sardine. Hip and happening Seminyak also boasts a plethora of chic cocktail bars, sumptuous spas and fashionable boutiques.

A world-class playground for the rich, the famous and the bon vivants, the vibrant nightlife and luxurious accommodation in Seminyak draws a sophisticated crowd of ‘beautiful people’, especially Europeans. Seminyak Beach is the place where local and expat communities gather every evening at sunset.

Seminyak is Bali’s have-it-all holiday destination for a relaxed beachside escape with easy access to the many tourist attractions around the island. Head south for Asia’s #1 water park, Waterbom, or hit the links at the scenic New Kuta Golf Club in the Bukit. North of Seminyak, enjoy the sporting facilities at Finns Recreation Club (for which some holiday villas in the area include guest membership), offering social and leisure amenities, including a state-of-the-art gym, a 25m swimming pool and a tennis and squash centre. For horse lovers, three riding stables are located at nearby Canggu – Kuda P, Tarukan, and Bali Equestrian Centre.

Villa Windu Sari

Villa Windu Sari

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

During our inspection of Villa Windu Sari we were treated to great service and cuisine by the staff. The villa is modern, functional, practical and most importantly comfortable. We felt very at home here. Our visit was with a group of friends and we found Windu Sari well laid out and generous enough for us to be able to enjoy each other’s company or retreat for some privacy and solitude when we wished. The villa would also work well for families.

Adelle Villa Two

Adelle Villa Two

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

As soon as we walked through the doors of Adelle Villa Two we thought ‘this is cute’ and for the location ‘surprisingly spacious’. It’s a dark wooden building so the effect is cosy, comfy and homely rather than light, bright and breezy. The rooms and living areas are basic and rustic with dated appliances (don’t expect a Bose sound system and plasma screens) but they do the job in a simple and relaxed way. And the generous garden and pool make it a great place for kids to let loose and for all to enjoy the sunshine. Due to its central location you can hear the faint sound of traffic in the distance and ambient sounds from the neighbouring villas but overall it is a quiet and peaceful place to unwind.

The staff spoke very limited English but the friendly villa manager, who is only a phone call away, can answer any questions you may have.

Unfortunately there was a local power failure just after our arrival, so we were literally left in the dark and without a back-up generator. But instead of searching for candles and fending for ourselves we decided to check out the nearby restaurant scene where we were simply spoilt for choice.

If you are looking for modern high-end luxury then Adelle Villa Two isn’t for you, but if you want great value for money, easy and comfortable living in a central location, then it ticks all the boxes.

Villa Alice 2

Villa Alice 2

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

If you’re looking for a villa in Seminyak, chances are you’re hoping to find one that’s got a great central location within strolling distance of a choice of restaurants, shops and bars. Villa Alice 2’s situation just a two-minute walk to Jalan Laksmana (aka Eat Street) and ten-minutes from Seminyak’s popular swathe of beaches will not disappoint. Very handily, its two bedrooms are equally sized making it suitable for families, couples and friends alike looking for a private place to stay in the heart of Seminyak.

We liked that having the living and sleeping areas divided across the tropical garden meant that in the evening, anyone retiring early will hear little noise from the lounge. The fact that the garden is enclosed and that the swimming pool has a shallow paddler-friendly section makes the villa especially suitable for families looking for a central base. A pool safety fence can be erected on request and baby cots are available. Each bedroom came with its own TV and DVD player (bedroom 1 also has cable) so that individual guests can escape and movie watch as they like.

We found the staff to be friendly and very helpful, and they left us to our own devices for much of the time. Since their working hours are from 8am until 4pm every day, we liked having the house to ourselves in the evening too; this arrangement works well for privacy-seeking couples. An American breakfast is cooked daily, and if you wish to pick a dish or two from one of the extensive take away menus they will help you to order lunch and dinner. Between the BaliEpicure fine dining menu (which we recommend) and the Hallo Bali magazine of numerous restaurants and cuisines there’s loads to choose from. You can also arrange for a cook to come to the villa for a fee. Otherwise, just head out and enjoy the amazing restaurants on your doorstep.

Villa Alice 1

Villa Alice 1

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Alice 1 couldn’t be better located if having a plethora of restaurants, shops and bars within easy reach are important considerations when picking your holiday villa. Aside from its fab location, Villa Alice 1 is also a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the urban environment that surrounds it. There’s plenty of space for a family to spread out; a baby cot is available and an extra bed can be added into one of the bedrooms if necessary. The tropical garden is enclosed, the pool has a shallow section for little paddlers and a pool safety fence can be erected on request.

Couples will also find this villa much to their liking – although the staff are friendly and very helpful, they did leave us to our own devices for much of the time so it felt very private. Since their working hours are from 8am until 4pm every day, we liked having the house to ourselves in the evening too. An American breakfast is cooked daily, and if you wish to pick a dish or two from one of the extensive take away menus they will help you to order lunch and dinner. Between the BaliEpicure fine dining menu and the Hallo Bali magazine of numerous restaurants and cuisines there’s loads to choose from. We picked dishes from Lemongrass – a Thai restaurant – and they weren’t bad at all. You can also arrange for a cook to come to the villa for a fee. Otherwise, just head out and enjoy the amazing restaurants on your doorstep.

Angel's Villa

Angel's Villa

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Angel’s Villa is compact both in its location and the villa itself – that said, it is bigger than most villas of this type and price range. The outside space is dominated by the pool which is lovely and refreshing – perfect to slide into from the pool-side lounge area – but there’s not much space for kids to run around. Overhead fans provide a good breeze to the open lounge and dining area which is not air-conditioned but is cool and shady. The dining area is a great setting to enjoy meals but do not try to move the table – quite frankly its one of the largest pieces of wood we have laid eyes on – and the quirky holes in the table top will no doubt capture the odd casualty.

All three bedrooms are spacious and have excellent bathrooms – clean, modern and very functional, if a little minimalist. The staff were attentive, although a little timid and their English wasn’t always great, but their desire to please is without compare. As the villa is managed independently, rather than through a specialist management company, the training levels were perhaps not quite up to the usual professional standard. The more senior staff, including the villa manager, were much better but they also work at the owner’s other villa so are not always around. That said, they were easily tracked down when needed.

All in all we liked the villa for what it was and would recommend it for a small group or family, but maybe not for very young children as the pool would be a constant concern.

Villa Anjali Blue

Villa Anjali Blue

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We loved staying at this handsome garden villa and really enjoyed the independence of using the good, modern kitchen or calling on the 24-hour catering service when we were too lazy to cook or dine out. But with so many good restaurants in the neighbourhood that wasn’t often. We were grateful for the daily housekeeping staff – friendly and courteous, with ever-ready big Balinese smiles and passable English – and felt well supported by the villa manager who runs this small complex. The villas are so well designed that despite their proximity, one is not aware of other guests: during our inspection the other two villas were also occupied, but we saw and heard no one.

The garden — intimate and well-landscaped with a variety of ornamental tropical plants — was a perpetual delight as the light changed over the course of the day; and well lit at night. We used it at all hours, as we did the balé (gazebo) — great for sprawling with a book during the day, or slipping away for a private conversation in the evening.

We found the bedrooms very comfortable and quiet and applauded the sturdy timber desks that are big enough to work at, and with intelligently placed electrical outlets. We also enjoyed the sundeck off one of the upstairs bedrooms, with its big double daybed.

Villa Anjali Green

Villa Anjali Green

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We found Villa Anjali Green to be a great solution for four people with different needs: near the beach/away from the crowds; a good kitchen for self-caterers/prefer to be cooked for/prefer dining out; love air conditioning/love fresh air; don’t want to be waited on hand and foot/need a cleaning staff … and don’t forget the pool. The villa also managed to very successfully combine modern architecture with natural materials, Indonesian textiles and ethnic art.

The visual focus of Anjali Green is the garden and pool, which gives a wonderful tropical atmosphere to the living and dining areas. Comfortable rattan lounge chairs on a wooden deck at the far end of the pool allow serene sun-bathing for two, but the lawn beside the pool was big enough for all four of to play ball.

We found the two bedrooms to be very quiet and comfortable. Some of us enjoyed the gentle haze of morning light coming through the fine curtains; others liked being able to shut out the light and sleep till noon without disturbance. The outdoor shower areas were great, with rain showers and hot water that comes on instantly (unlike in many older properties in Bali!). We appreciated the sturdy timber desks that are big enough to work at, with room for a laptop and files next to the flat-screen TV, and intelligently placed electrical outlets next to the desk. We loved the Balinese touches, such as the repousée metal boxes – fashioned in the manner of Balinese offerings boxes – in the bathrooms and kitchen for odds and ends, and the fresh frangipani blossoms placed around the rooms when we first arrived.

The villa manager stayed on till late in the evening, way past his hours, just to welcome us; and the security staff were very helpful, calling us a taxi when we wanted to go out in the evening. Housekeepers were friendly and courteous, with ever-ready big Balinese smiles.

Villa Anjali Orange

With extra beds and the option of also renting the adjacent Villa Anjali Purple, you could sleep up to 12 people. (Note that the upstairs bedroom at Anjali Orange may not be suitable for the elderly or very young as there is no hand-rail on the stairs).

The garden — intimate and well-landscaped with a variety of ornamental tropical plants — was a perpetual delight as the light changed over the course of the day; and well lit at night. We used it at all hours, as we did the balé (gazebo) — great for sprawling with a book during the day, or slipping away for a private conversation in the evening (although we thought the cushions could be bigger).

We loved the collection of carved wooden figures half-hidden in the plants at the far end of the pool, like a cluster of guardian spirits. We found the bedrooms very comfortable and quiet and applauded the sturdy timber desks that are big enough to work at, and with intelligently placed electrical outlets. We also enjoyed the sundeck off the upstairs bedroom — starkly unfurnished, but so were we.

Villa Anjali Purple

Villa Anjali Purple

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Anjali Purple is a gem-like hideaway; a bit of a love nest. We loved the clean, contemporary architecture, the Indonesian textiles, ethnic art and the sense of privacy and independence. It was great to be so near the Petitenget scene with its beach and restaurants, and yet go back to somewhere peaceful and quiet. The villas are so well designed that despite their proximity, one is not aware of other guests.

Villa Anjali Purple’s open-air plan fills the living and dining space with the light and colour of the small garden. We thought this villa was the prettiest of the four in the Anjali complex. The purple colour scheme is surprisingly well-handled and gives the villa an opulent feel. The rich grey marble floors deepen the feeling of luxury.

We felt at home as soon as we’d unpacked. The bedroom is comfortably furnished; the hot water in the bathroom comes on instantly (unlike in many older properties) and there was plenty of storage in the dressing area. We applaud the sturdy timber desks that are big enough to work at, with room for a laptop and files next to the flat-screen TV, and intelligently placed electrical outlets alongside.

We enjoyed being able to stock the kitchen with our favourite provisions from the up-scale Bali Deli supermarket (about 6km) and slipping over to the madly wonderful Potato Head Beach Club (2km) for lunch, a swim in the pool, and a long walk along the beach. In the evening it was easy to order a taxi and fully indulge in Seminyak’s nightlife.

A swim in the villa’s pool was fresh in the morning, a perfect way to un-wind after shopping, and deliciously private at night. There was only one sun lounger, but we just spread a beach towel on the lawn.

The housekeeping staff were friendly and courteous, with big Balinese smiles. We also felt well-looked after by the gracious and competent villa manager. But guests are mainly left to their own devices.

Villa Aqua

Villa Aqua

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

At its gala opening in 2007 Villa Aqua was at the top of its game. A new style of party villa extraordinaire commissioned by four successful professionals to be their base when visiting Bali. The theme has now been copied many times – not surprisingly, because the concept was great, and with a bit of creative inspiration, enhanced technology (and a stack of cash) has even been improved upon.

We picked up on the party vibe as soon as we arrived; the staff welcomed us with cold towels, iced drinks, a fridge full of Bintang beer, and upbeat house music playing through the speakers in the ceiling of the tropical sunken lounge. The architecture and interiors are adult and rather masculine in style; there are loads of games and facilities that adults and older kids will really enjoy, but the villa is not recommended for toddlers due to the open roof terraces, open external staircases, and a rooftop pond.  This is one of Bali’s most popular villas; it is rarely unoccupied, perhaps accounting for why it has not been maintained as well as it could have been.
