inspiring; we enjoyed wide views over the sea and watched the sun fade into the lush headland beyond. Inside we revelled in the villa's unusual rustic luxury, where nature's clever designs – a large twisted driftwood log, for example – meshed perfectly with the sumptuous, finely crafted finishings. And as for the terrace, we've never seen an outdoor space furnished so lavishly, where slumber, sunbathing and sunset cocktails could all be enjoyed to the hilt. During our short stay we simply ran out of time to make the most of all the fun stuff; from the games room snooker table to the impressive sound system to the gym, though we did manage to whack a few balls around the pitch-and-putt green, set in lush tropical surrounds – if it weren't for the rather distracting sea view we're sure our golf skills would have improved here. We were also impressed with the generous size and facilities that each bedroom offered, ideal for groups or extended families, with the guest villa providing an even more secluded retreat. While many villas are aimed at being either a romantic hideaway or a fabulous party pad, Villa Chan Grajang manages to be both, in spades.

There is definite appeal for families (particularly those with older children), but this villa would probably better suit travelling couples or a group of adult friends, with a great range of features for holiday revelry: a bar and underwater barstools in the pool, a recreation room with pool table, elaborate kitchen and a full-time cook and hostess. For those who lose the coin toss for the spectacular top-floor master bedroom, the two other bedrooms are certainly easy to settle for, being nearly as large and with nice sea views, private balconies and spacious, luxurious ensuite bathrooms. We enjoyed spending time in the roomy and comfortable common areas with our travelling companions, while grand pockets of privacy provided plenty of opportunity for intimate, quiet moments. Being part of the Baan Thai Surin Hill villa development, you never quite have a feeling of total seclusion, yet private roads and the secured main entry point ensure that the area is populated with only other villa guests and staff. The full-time villa manager/cook and her assistant are unobtrusive yet extremely helpful when called upon for meal preparation, cleaning, transport/tour assistance or other services.

For those who love their luxurious comforts, Rak Tawan offers a heaven-sent combination blend ofof a striking tropical hilltop location and a modern, open design that floods the villa with light and cool tropical breezes. Though built seven years agoin 2003, this villa still appears

brand new and its timeless style, extensive use of natural materials including stone and local woods, and contemporary art pieces add to its fresh look. Though we hadn't planned to hold an event here, the amazing bar and terrace area made us feel we should create an occasion just to take advantage of this perfect pool-party venue! Indeed, there have been many lavish events and weddings held here, and the villa manager mentioned that entertaining up to 150 guests was not out of the question. With the hubbub of villa activity centred around the pool and terrace, the top-floor living/TV area is a great spot for a quiet retreat and taking in the sea views.

Whether the visit is for a family holiday or executive retreat, no one gets a short shrift when it comes to sleeping quarters; four king-bedded rooms provide added romance with double bathtubs, while the fifth bedroom features its own living area and double bed with additional sleeping space for three more – just great for kids sits in its own pavilion at the top corner of the villa, offering some of the best views (though its ensuite lacks a bathtub)..

WhilstThough there are other villas nearby within the estate, Rak Tawan's height and lush landscaping keeps it well out of sight of its neighbours. The only other life we spotted here were a few scampering squirrels and a friendly bird that tap-tapped on a bedroom window. The steep drive up and down the hill can be a bit daunting, but the villa staff will happily go out for provisions when needed and taxis can be arranged.

Foodies will be impressed by the Thai chef's skills here – his meals are prepared with real care and flair, and all the kitchen facilities – both in the main kitchen and staff kitchen – are top-of-the line. A Western chef may be brought in by special arrangement, too, for an extra charge. (The owner is an investor in the restaurant business so the food service here is very well thought out.)

beach is only a ten-minute walk down the road. We thought the villa would be especially suitable for families as kids will enjoy the independence of the upper rooms whilst the master suite has a lovely situation beside the pool overlooking the lagoon. The shallow section of the pool, closest to the villa, means that younger children can safely make the most of the water. The kitchen is well equipped with appliances but only has the bare essentials in terms of cooking utensils, however with such a great choice of restaurants in the area – from local Thai food at the end of the road to fabulous upmarket dining (most including children’s menus), you might not be cooking much at home. A Thai chef can also be arranged to cook for you at the villa (with 24 hours notice and at extra cost) if you fancy a change. It would be worth bringing along some of your own music, DVDs and board games as the selection at the villa is small; however there are a few inflatable pool toys for the kids. We were able to contact the management company at any time of the day when we needed help with tour bookings and transport. They also provide a laundry service and can do your food shopping for you (an itemised list with prices is available in the villa information pack) if you really want to have a break from the usual household chores.
