Umalas-Kerobokan villas in Bali, Indonesia

Located between Seminyak and Canggu, the area known as Kerobokan, which includes Umalas village and Banjar Semer, is conveniently close to Seminyak’s trendy restaurants and designer boutiques, yet is promoted as the peaceful option because these flat plains still encompass acres of rice fields and distant mountain views.

Development, however, is happening fast, and this group of rural villages is now home to numerous rental villas and private residences, with plenty of cheap ‘n cheerful Western-style cafes cropping up in the most unexpected of places, offering surprisingly good food and home/villa delivery services. Although there are very few shops as yet, there are a number of local supermarkets, bakeries, garden centres, simple spas and fitness centres, as well as three riding stables at nearby Canggu – Kuda P, Tarukan, and Bali Equestrian Centre. Visitors will also find ATM machines and reliable taxi services. The main road leading north of Seminyak to Kerobokan is lined with furniture stores and workshops offering “antiques made to order”.

Eden Villas - 5BR Shambala (Garden View 13)

Eden Villas - 5BR Shambala (Garden View 13)

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

If you are into eclectic decor, vibrant artwork and bold bright colour schemes, Eden Villas might not be for you, but if you like simplicity, style and minimalist design you will be enthralled. The all-white design is ambitious but most people will at least be impressed at how successfully this concept has been executed. All of the bedrooms at all of the Eden Villas are pretty much the same; the only variation is in size, aspect and view, with some of them having balconies. This means that you’ll have no reason to argue over who gets which room, but the lack of individuality makes them feel a little bit like hotel rooms. We stayed at Eden Villas when the complex had only just opened and even at these early stages we could see that the all-white décor was going to be a challenge in terms of maintenance, but there is a huge team of staff looking after the whole complex. We were struck by the professional management and the dedicated reception office. The staff are allocated to specific villas, which ensures personal service.

Harmony Villas

Harmony Villas

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

‘Very stylish indeed’ we thought when we walked through the door of our Harmony Villa. Fish swimming in the water flowing between the stepping stones in the villa’s leafy portico, lots of shady palms, tropical flowers, a small private swimming pool; altogether a very inviting two-storey dwelling.

In a quiet street, with rice fields to the front and rear offering a genuine window into rural Bali, this pair of villas really allows you to get away from it all. And it’s so quiet! After preparing our own simple lunch we spent a lazy afternoon chilling out, reading books and swimming in the pool. The villas are self-catering but if you aren’t in the mood to cook, you can order gourmet meals (menu provided in the villa) from BaliEpicure, a company that offers 24-hour in-villa dining. We also recommend taking advantage of the many nearby restaurants and beach bars. We jumped in a taxi and headed to the beach at sunset for a couple of cold beers at Cozy Wheels (1km) on Batubelig Beach and when it got dark we called into Warung Sobat to sample their famous ‘Steak Wiwin’, the cheapest and best in Bali. Finally, we flopped back on our comfortable king-size bed in the villa and watched a movie.

Villa Iman Jasa

Villa Iman Jasa

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

It was a pleasure to step into Villa Iman Jasa and find – in place of a polished, impersonal rental – a lovely family home. We liked its laid-back personality and easy barefoot beach-style vibe. It felt intimate, family-friendly, and spacious, with some quiet corners to retreat to for ‘me’ time. At our request, the staff served our continental breakfast on the terrace of the master bedroom. We spent the morning drifting between the alang-alang thatched balé (gazebo) and the shallows of the enormous pool, gazing over the bank of rice terraces beyond the garden’s edge. At night, after enjoying a beautiful sunset, we reclined on brightly coloured sofas under the enormous white chandelier, relaxing to the sounds of gamelan music wafting in with the breeze, punctuated by fireworks set off on Petitenget beach. And we slept well in our four-poster bed, soothed by the lavender room spray (one of a collection thoughtfully provided).

Other than the chatter of the staff during the day and the rare bark of the resident dog, it’s an amazingly peaceful villa. Despite increasing development that eats into Canggu’s rice fields, this is a place where you can still tune into the rhythms and rituals of rural Balinese life little changed in generations. From every room, we could see farmers tending their crops, and we were privileged to witness a Balinese temple ceremony in a local village on the way to the beach. Our visit coincided with Galungan, a major Balinese celebration that happens every 210 days, and so the lanes were beautifully decorated with rows of penjurs – tall, tapering bamboo poles decorated with offerings placed outside every Balinese home. Some nice eateries are within a kilometre of the villa (including Bali Buddha, Café Moka and the gorgeous Kayu Api bakery) and with so much happening close by we felt no compunction to head to the bright lights of Seminyak 15 minutes away.

Iman Jasa means ‘great service’. Though perhaps not as polished as some villa staff teams, the staff looked after us well with sweet smiles and a willingness to please. They greeted us with refreshing cut fruit and cold towels, and served us a home-cooked fish curry for supper.

Villa Karishma

Villa Karishma

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

Villa Karishma is certainly a very large villa that offers luxury and privacy. Our first impressions were that the high walls to either side of the villa made it feel a little hemmed in, but after a while this enclosure actually became quite comforting, and the views across the pool remain open towards the river and its wooded embankment. Although the master suite is without doubt the largest and most indulgent of the six bedrooms, the others are all of a similar size and so would be good for equitable sharing. A big selection of DVDs should suit everybody’s tastes – and can be enjoyed in the privacy of your own bedroom. We found the staff team, and in particular the butler, to be friendly and responsive to our requirements; they were very experienced and although perhaps few in number for a property of this size (only five full time), more can be called upon if the villa is fully occupied. The kitchen is very well-equipped and although presided over by a good chef who creates meals at cost price (plus 15% service charge), the staff did mention that guests are welcome to use it too, and that they are happy to help prepare and wash up. That said, we felt that Villa Karishma really is a place for escapism and pampering; the massive living room, complete with bar, is the perfect social hub. As well as a security guard, the villa also has 24 hour CCTV with cameras in the kitchen. There are no shopping or dining facilities within walking distance of the villa so if you wish to venture out a car is necessary. Alternatively, the staff can easily call for a taxi.

Oazia Aqua

Oazia Aqua

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

To find a two-bedroom villa with two living areas and such an abundance of space is rare indeed. To find one that also includes an onsite holistic spa, and a car and driver on call eight hours per day is a first for us.

During our short stay at Villa Oazia Aqua we spent an afternoon by the pool, followed by a massage in the spa; we sipped a sunset cocktail on the terrace, enjoyed a romantic alfresco dinner, an indulgent soak in the outdoor bathtub and a movie session on the wonderfully soft couches, and concluded that this was an oasis indeed. Everywhere we looked there was something to enjoy: antique statues and curios, beckoning sofas, towering trees, huge pots of bougainvillea, a lotus pond, rice terraces and billowing white curtains catching the breeze.

Oazia Orchid

Oazia Orchid

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

Romance is the theme here, and Villa Oazia Orchid is totally geared up for couples looking for a romantic escape combined with some wonderful (and unusual) holistic spa treatments, either in the villa’s private garden or at the on-site Oazia Spa. We loved the eclectic shabby-chic design and furnishings, the Balinese stone carvings, pots of bougainvillea, the rice terrace view from the lofty gazebo, and the billowing white curtains catching the breeze. The swimming pool is bigger than usual for a one-bedroom villa and the walled garden is totally private. An oasis indeed!

The spa is a definite (if not defining) highlight – though bookings are essential as, although villa guests get preferential treatment (and a complimentary Balinese massage each), the spa is also open to the public. Another lovely treat is the complimentary bottle of wine that awaits each group of guests.

Oazia White

Oazia White

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

One night at Villa Oazia White (such a beautifully simple moniker) just wasn’t long enough to really get to know her. That said, we still managed an afternoon on the sunbeds, some down-time in the balé, a movie session on the wonderfully soft couches, a convivial dinner party, a massage at the spa, an indulgent alfresco bath, some decent swim time, a leisurely breakfast and a full night of sleep … but it would have been nice to spread it out over a few long luxurious days.

Everywhere you look there is something to enjoy: antique statues, beckoning sofas, towering trees, flowering shrubs, fluttering butterflies and softly billowing drapes catching the breeze. And there aren’t many villas in Bali that have a river actually running through it. Perfect.

The onsite spa goes beyond the normal offerings of massage and nail treatments by delving into the holistic realms of the mystical with Shamanic Reiki, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Aqua Flow Therapy, Balinese Shamanic Healing and much more. It has gained a reputation as one of the best in Bali.

We had a most memorable stay at Oazia Spa Villas: meals were prompt and delicious, the cushions were deep and the spa was heaven. All in all, a veritable ‘oasis’ if you will.

Villa Putih Semer

Villa Putih Semer

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

What we loved about Villa Putih Semer were the gorgeously chic interiors, which are of the ilk that you would expect to find featured in a classy interior design magazine. The owners are passionate about food, wine, music and books, and have made this the concept of their home. The cook showcased her skills by preparing her specialty, seafood curry, which proved to be fantastic. This sophisticated villa is a rural oasis on the edge of town, where we were able to totally relax and unwind within a beautiful, natural setting with a sneaky rice field view fringed by a small river, jungle vegetation and a bamboo thicket. The villa is so peaceful, so quiet, and so private. The car and driver (included in villa rate) is a great bonus, but we found it very hard to leave the premises. There are also some simple spas in the neighbourhood but, again, for those not wanting to venture out, staff can easily arrange for massages and spa treatments administered by professional therapists (on guest account) – to be carried out on the villa’s own massage bed.

Villa Reina

Villa Reina

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

We enjoyed our time at Villa Reina just chilling beside the pool and absorbing the lush garden surroundings, and we loved the incredibly private atmosphere and the convivial design of the huge living room. Despite the villa’s dusky black and purple decor, its open layout allowed the light to pour in, and in the bedrooms, these contemporary shades were softened by woollen crochet bedspreads, matching cushions and long white curtains. The ensuite bathrooms, even with their glamorous silver sinks, felt beautifully natural and Balinese.

The villa would make a wonderful hideaway for sunseeking groups of friends (as long as fights don’t break out over who gets the master suite!), and it’s a particularly good set up for a family with a couple of older kids. The master suite has a particularly great bathroom, and pamperpusses will adore the oversized moulded stone tub that’s placed just beside sliding doors onto a river-view terrace. This bathroom also makes a great spot for enjoying a massage, and a quick phone call to BaliEpicure is all that’s needed for masseurs to head your way, massage table in tow. We tried it and loved every second – it was all so easy to arrange.

The villa comes with a husband and wife staff team who look after the house and garden, as well as a night security guard. The first breakfast is included in the rate, and after this all other meals are costed according to the price of the groceries. The maid can prepare western breakfasts and simple Indonesian cuisine for lunch and dinner, and she can do the shopping on your behalf if you furnish her with some cash and a list. She works until 5pm and prepared dinner for us before she left for the day. We liked this system as it gave us plenty of privacy in the house in the evening. The kitchen is also well equipped for self-caterers, and a selection of menus (including BaliEpicure) are available for home delivery.
