Unawatuna
Silva Tree presented a very different way to enjoy Sri Lanka's scenery – by getting right in amongst it – which made it a real delight to stay here. The building itself is certainly unique and completely unexpected, soaring its modernity into the sky but somehow still managing to blend
right in.
Comfort-wise, Silva Tree provides the right amount for the maximum number of guests (6) that the property can accommodate. Bedrooms are a little on the small side but perfectly functional, especially as much of the living really goes on in the huge top floor living room where the views are sublime.
In terms of facilities, there are only the bare essentials here – no TVs or internet connections – and obviously no pool! But you come here to escape the distractions of modern life, and the house is a placid base from which to enjoy Unawatuna and further afield. There is, however, an iPod dock, and quite honestly that's all you need. Groups of friends, adventurists, nature lovers and seclusion-seekers are sure to appreciate this house.
The kindly housekeeper, Mrs Ira (who lives 100m down the road), left us to our own devices for the most part, arriving with her daughter daily to clean and cook us Sri Lankan meals when we requested them (at additional cost). With Unawatuna and Galle's wide range of restaurants at your doorstep, eating out is certainly not a problem. The villa provides a mobile phone which is preinstalled with important numbers – including that of Mrs Ira and a three-wheeler ‘taxi' driver; handy if you get lost coming home!
