The Experience
Arriving at Baan Asan after a gentle drive through the quiet countryside, you are immediately struck by the privacy and peace of this serene beachside location on Samui’s south west coast. Throughout the villa modern architecture is balanced with Asian objet d'art and paintings carefully selected from around the region, adding an oriental twist. Stunning contemporary living spaces, a spectacular master suite, and four luxurious poolside guest pavilions (two of which feature adjoining children’s rooms with bunk-beds) offer every imaginable comfort and make Baan Asan a fabulous destination for a get-away-from-it-all group, couples or family holiday.
Ten stylish sun loungers present comfort by the pool – which extends its tempting waters through the middle of the villa. Lounging here, whilst sipping a mojito made with fresh mint from the Baan Asan herb garden, is certainly an experience not to be missed. Alternatively, indulge in a relaxing jacuzzi or lie back and cool off in the smaller overflow pool – also an ideal spot for little ones to enjoy a paddle. Children are well-catered for at Baan Asan: not only will they love sleeping in the two bunk-bed rooms but they will be thrilled to have their own supper party at the wooden table on the lawn and go combing for shells on the safe, shallow beach.
There are plenty of activities for adults and older children too. Kayaking, swimming and a stylish cinema room keep everyone entertained, while for health enthusiasts there's a fully-equipped glass-fronted gym. More sedentary pursuits are possible in the library with its stunning sea views. Outdoor speakers and a Bose sound system help create a relaxing atmosphere in the living and poolside areas, and each of the bedrooms boasts its own individual iPod-friendly stereo.
Dining arrangements at Baan Asan are delightfully flexible; from a formal dinner for fourteen on the giant boat-shaped teak table, to a light supper served outside on the terrace at sunset. The staff can even set up a table directly on the beach or lawn looking out over the ocean if that is your desire. Delicious seafood barbecues, local food and international cuisine (provisioning extra) are served up effortlessly by the chef and his efficient team, with individual care and attention paid to every guest. After dinner, drinks in the cosy sala (relaxation pavilion) overlooking the beach make a perfect end to a perfect day.

Highlights
The combination of large communal living spaces and intimate sleeping pavilions makes Baan Asan an ideal place for large groups and families. Taking in the tropical sunset from the infinity pool is a sublime pleasure to be shared.
Surprises
Baan Asan is located on a very quiet beach, but the sea is too shallow for swimming from June to October. The sand in front of the villa is well-kept but due to the undeveloped nature of the bay the rest of the beach isn't quite so pristine, although this is made up for by the peaceful secluded atmosphere and exquisite sunsets overlooking the islands of the marine national park. The villa is, in general, very family-friendly, but watch out for the ‘floating’ staircase leading up from the living area.
PROs
- Magnificent sunset views
- Two stand-alone family suites
- Great facilities
- Plenty of outdoor activities
CONs
- Sea too shallow for swimming (June to Oct)
- Beach not as pristine as it could be

Location
Baan Asan is located directly on the beach, with only one neighbouring villa on the right hand side. The beach is peaceful and quiet and well worth exploring. The view of the marine national park is spectacular and as you walk further round the bay you will find a few exclusive beachside spa resorts and restaurants. You can also walk to the traditional village of Baan Taling Ngam with its southern style houses, and small selection of shops.

About Taling Ngam
A holiday in Taling Ngam, deep in the south of Koh Samui island, transports you to a magically quiet, unspoilt and peaceful oasis surrounded by coconut groves, grazing water buffaloes and pristine palm-fringed beaches offering mesmerising views of the neighbouring islands of Koh Tan and Koh Madsum. The wide sandy beach is protected by a coral reef, so swimming is not possible for most of the year, but a small bay nicknamed South Beach found at the western end, is more swimmable.
Although a laid-back area, there are still many things to do in Taling Ngam. Take a cue from the imposing Elephant Gate that welcomes you into Taling Ngam village. Constructed in 1979 by the head monk of the local temple, the Elephant Gate is not just a tourist spot, but also symbolic of the warmth and welcoming nature of the locals. It was built to encourage people to visit the beautiful temple located within this secluded village.
Waterfalls and temples abound in the vicinity and the main attractions near Laem Sor are Wat Laem Sor - a golden Pagoda perched on the beach, a 'meditation' forest and Khao Chedi, a snow-white stupa, sitting atop a steep hill and surrounded by various Buddha statues. All have stunning ocean views and gather a festive atmosphere on Buddhist holy days, as monks and locals pay homage. Thai style rustic eateries, classier establishments and a small beachside pub are found in the picturesque fishing village of Thong Krut close by. Brightly coloured long-tail tour boats and speed boats lie anchored along the shoreline, waiting to transport you to the local islands. Venture out to Koh Tan for snorkelling and an amazing white beach, perfect for swimming and relaxing with an epic sunset barbecue.
On the other side, the little-visited stretch of flat, soft sand of Laem Set stretches around three kilometres from the traditional fishing village of Hua Thanon to the sheltered, rocky bays of the Laem Set peninsular. Fishermen moor and unload their catch daily close to the village market, providing excellent photo opportunities, not to mention a great source of fresh seafood. This is also the island's only remaining Muslim enclave, where the mosque is still the centre of the community. The peninsular itself boasts some of the island's quietest beaches and coves. Beyond Laem Set, Grandfather’s and Grandmother’s rocks are a short drive away.
The quiet and tranquil area around Taling Ngam is dotted with spas and wellbeing centres such as Kamalaya, Avani and Samahita. Be sure to get pampered whilst you are there.
About Koh Samui
The third largest island in Thailand, Koh Samui is just 21km at its widest point and 25km at its longest. The hinterland consists of forested limestone hills and the shoreline is made up of countless coconut palm-fringed beaches and bays.
Traditionally a coconut plantation and fisherman's haven, in the last few years the island has grown into a major holiday destination with regular connections to Bangkok and direct flights from Hong Kong and Singapore. Despite rapid development, Samui is small enough to retain its charm and its modest size also makes it a convenient, laid back location even during busy seasons.
As well as fine beaches, Samui is known for recreation, relaxation and fine food. The blue waters of the Thai Gulf provide a wealth of possibility for water sports, while on land the island is well known for its professional and indulgent spas and health retreats. Fresh seafood is a specialty at most of Samui's restaurants, but you can also enjoy food from almost every corner of the globe thanks to the island's strong international influences.
Each beach on Samui has its own particular character and ambience. The east coast beaches of Chaweng and Lamai are busy, commercial areas with everything from beach vendors to fast food chains, while to the north, Bang Rak and Bo Phut have a more relaxed local village atmosphere. Beaches like Lipa Noi and Laem Set on the western and southern shores feel much more remote and untouched.
Koh Samui combines comfort and convenience with a sense of real escape and this has made it a popular choice for residential as well as tourist development. The island is an eclectic blend of nature and sophistication, one that draws repeat visitors every year to indulge in its tropical delights.
Rooms
Set on two rai (3200sqm) of land, Baan Asan is spacious as well as private, with high walls surrounding the garden and stunning tropical plants creating a lush setting for the bedroom suites and 20m infinity pool. The sheer size of the open-plan living and dining room is rivalled only by the view from the floor-to-ceiling glass doors which extend across its entire frontage. This – combined with the room’s high ceilings – imparts a sense of space and luxury; whilst the black tiled floors and white walls create a contemporary feel which is complemented by ultra-modern fans and an enormous teak dining table comfortably seating fourteen. The living area is the perfect place to gather, with its collection of uniquely designed chairs and sofas lending comfort to the stark, minimalist theme. To the left of the living and dining area is a large, super-modern kitchen with a central work station of stainless steel and a stylish hob. Bread-makers, juicers and gadgets abound and a second staff kitchen connects. A separate cinema room, to the right of the living room, features a 42-inch flat-screen TV/DVD player and extremely welcoming sofas whilst a stylish floating staircase leads up from the dining area to a fully-equipped glass-fronted gym which links – via a walk way – to the office/library. This is also the route to the upstairs master-suite, situated on the third floor. The master suite boasts floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean. Carefully selected furniture, such as the fabulous purple king-sized bed, is exhibited against the white walls and teak parquet floors. ‘Floating’ walls separate multiple living spaces that include a modern kitchenette and breakfast bar and luxurious lounge area with a 50-inch flat-screen TV/DVD player. A private changing area leads to the lavish bathroom suite with a huge bath tub and walk-in shower. Four independent guest pavilions reflect the Chinese elements of Earth, Fire, Wood and Water with stylish colour schemes in green, red, brown and blue. The rooms each have stunning modern ensuites complete with terrazzo bath tub and shower. All of the pavilions have 32-inch TV screens with satellite channels, CD players, mini bars, safes and king-size beds and, in a piece of thoughtful and practical design, the two pavilions closest to the living pavilion include cosy children's rooms with bunk-beds, plus their own bathroom and private entrance. Outside each pavilion, comfortable terraces feature elegant outdoor furniture.
