Couples and small families seeking tropical escape and adventure are well provided for at the 2-bedroomed Villa Cattleya C5a in L'Orchidée Residences private hillside estate. Superb sea views, excellent service and classic luxury make retreating here a pleasure, while the soft sands and lively attractions of Patong beckon from below.

Villa Cattleya C5a is among the few villas where the phrase, 'having it all', is not an overstatement. We could retreat completely into its tranquil and luxurious surrounds yet if the mood struck we could venture out to some of Phuket's liveliest and most interesting dining and entertainment offerings within minutes. The vaulted roof and teak detailing make the villa look exceptionally majestic yet we felt very comfortable in it right away. We made full use of the terrace and pool areas and, although the pool was not huge, the lovely stone wall and elephant statues make it a nice oasis for soaking up the sea view while splashing around.
Though there are no live-in kitchen or cleaning staff (except by request, at extra charge), service here is very flexible and efficient. The meals we ordered in from the estate's central kitchen were excellent, prepared in authentic Thai style with a few innovative touches, such as the laarb gai, (minced chicken) patties that could be dipped in a spicy sauce. A daily maid service takes care of housekeeping and the estate manager readily dealt with our every request. The management team can also help organise larger events, and we were impressed by preparations for a team building event taking place around the shared pool area one evening during our visit.
With such a nice balance of shared space, privacy and great access to the beach and island attractions, we could find little reason why small families or couples with a wide range of interests would not have an excellent stay at Villa Cattleya C5a.

The incredible view was an unending source of inspiration throughout our stay. A beautiful glittering sea, magnificent sunsets and the twinkle of Patong's lights at night were enjoyed especially from the terrace and pool area. The quality craftsmanship and high level maintenance make the villa look brand new even though it was built in 2006, and the service provided by the L'Orchidée team was notably efficient and friendly.
Surprises
The villas within the estate are quite close to each other and, while they are arranged sensitively, total privacy is inevitably lacking. A food menu in the villa would be helpful for guests who’d prefer some meal suggestions. Stairs and steep hills might be difficult for some to manage, though the buggy service helps immensely.

The Experience
Set in the hills with a wide ocean vista, this two-bedroom villa provides a tranquil retreat for couples or small families, yet all the attractions and entertainment options of Patong, Phuket's vibrant resort town, are close at hand. On the upper floor of Villa Cattleya's two levels, shaded terrace space and a private pool offer plenty of opportunity to relax and cool down, while just inside is an open-plan, very comfortably furnished living area, dining space and kitchen all under a Thai Lanna-style roof with a skylight at its peak. Folding glass doors and ceiling fans allow this level to be fully opened to enjoy the tropical climate, but air conditioning is also at hand should the afternoon heat prove too much. Downstairs, two spacious sea-view master suites offer ensuite bathrooms and plenty of privacy.
Beautiful Thai art and design details give this villa a very opulent feel that blends traditional Asian culture with modern amenities. Everything appears solidly built and elegant, and the extensive use of teak and natural materials enhances the villa's look of understated luxury.
Villa Cattleya's infinity-edged pool is a lovely, blue-tiled oasis set at the side of the villa providing optimal ocean views. Just uphill, within a five-minute walk, is the estate's large shared pool with magnificent ocean views and a children's pool. A pétanque pitch, pool table and a fitness centre with sauna are also found here, as well as a shop selling wine, beer, soft drinks and a selection of snacks. A small stock of books, magazines, toys and games are available to borrow.
As part of an immaculate collection of 25 villas in the L'Orchidée Residences luxury estate, efficient, professional service is provided by the on-site management company. Airport transfer and daily cleaning service is included, while a dedicated in-villa maid and chef can be provided on request (extra charges apply). Most guests opt to order meals from the estate’s central kitchen or to self-cater. Other easily arranged services include in-villa massage, grocery shopping, tours/transport and babysitting.
Villa Cattleya's address places it in Phuket's busiest resort town of Patong Beach, but its hillside location keeps it well above the fray. It is set in the lower part of the 25-villa estate along a winding uphill road but trees and divider walls maintain a good sense of privacy. There's a pleasant community-like feel throughout the estate, with jungle sounds emanating from the verdant hillside behind providing a contrast to the city lights stretched out below. The shared pool area just uphill is a nice gathering spot with its terrace and fitness centre offering great sea views, and the mini-mart here is a handy place to pick up a bottle of wine for the evening. All of Patong's shopping, dining and entertainment choices are a 5-10 minute taxi ride away, or 15-20 minutes by foot. Patong's sandy beach is a five-minute walk away, while the much quieter and smaller Kalim Beach is about 15 minutes north by foot. Loch Palm, Red Mountain and Phuket Country Club golf courses are reached within a 15-minute drive over Patong hill to the east.
About Patong Phuket's main tourist centre, Patong, sits half way down the island's famous west coast with its fabulous sandy beaches and picture postcard sunsets. Patong is busy, exciting and alive with a resort atmosphere by day and night. Patong presents international cuisines and icy cold drinks beside the beach; chic cafes next to beer bars; exquisite galleries next to muay Thai rings; branded goods shops next to ‘knock-off' markets. Like all great Thai spots, Patong is a kaleidoscope of contradictions. Large shopping centres with international brands and supermarkets are available in Patong as well as a whole host of mini-marts. Tesco, Central Festival and Big C – the three main malls/supermarkets are a 20km drive across hills which back Patong. Kamala, a small bay area known for its quiet sandy beach, relaxed feel and slower pace, is 15km north of Patong. Ten minutes' drive north of Kamala is Surin, a surprisingly quiet ‘village' that exudes an air of luxury. Phuket Town is 23.5km away by car. Patong is a 53km drive from Phuket's international airport. The area is easily and cheaply accessible by taxi and car hire is inexpensive.

The villa is divided into two levels, with the top floor providing a living area, fully-equipped kitchen and dining room that opens out to the terrace and pool. The terrace, cooled by ceiling fans, furnished with a round wooden table for six, and shaded by a gorgeous teak sala (pavilion), is a perfect spot for enjoying breakfast alfresco, while lounge chairs offer an additional place to relax and take in views of the sea. A seven-metre infinity pool with elephant fountain statues and built-in underwater lounge beds is set in a charming walled garden space off to the side.
Inside, the living space is divided into two areas, with one section at the front next to the pool furnished with a daybed – a nice area for some quiet reading. Behind, arranged around a 42-inch TV with surround-sound speakers and a DVD player, is a plush brown sofa and chair set. The modern western kitchen, stocked with high quality dishes, equipment and cooking supplies, makes entertaining a cinch. A lovely wooden dining table seats four, with additional seating for three at a wooden bar that divides the dining and daybed areas. High ceilings and a skylight along the roof's peak give this room an added airiness and brightness while one-touch lighting control offers eight mood settings. The central wooden staircase makes a grand exit point for descending to the bedrooms below.
The two master suites downstairs provide a great deal of seclusion and impressive sea views. Each feature king-sized beds and romantic ensuite bathrooms with jacuzzi bathtubs, dual vanities and showers. Folding glass doors lead out to a spacious shared balcony that is partitioned for added privacy.
A single covered car parking space is provided at the villa with more parking available at the secured main entrance down the hill. Free buggy service to and from the villa is offered 24 hours a day.

Standard deposit policy
In order to have a booking confirmed you must make deposit payment as outlined in The Villa Guide Booking Terms and Conditions unless special conditions are indicated for the period you are booking. The standard deposits are:
-For rentals beginning more than 60 days after the date of your booking request - a deposit of 50% of the total rental amount is payable.
-For rentals beginning 60 days or less after the date of your booking request - the total rental amount is payable as a deposit.
Standard cancellation policy
In the event of cancellation, penalties as outlined in The Villa Guide Booking Terms and Conditions apply unless special conditions are indicated for the period you are booking.
It is strongly recommended that you purchase trip cancellation travel insurance.

Security deposit
Upon arrival at the villa you will be required to sign a waiver of liability and a credit card authorization form which will allow for damages and any additional charges that you may incur to be charged against the card.

Late check outs up to 6.00pm may incur a half day charge, after 6.00pm a full day may be charged.
