The 4-bedroomed villa is fully-staffed; its swimming pool, gardens, living and dining options and thoughtful room layout making it an ideal choice for families and small groups.
A villa committed to eco-friendly practices, healthy lifestyle and giving back to the community.
As spiritual souls with environmentally and community-aware leanings and a thirst for local culture, this one-of-a-kind villa has our name all over it. Villa Hansa (no coincidence it’s named after the Goddess of Knowledge) offers visitors so much more than just another Balinese deluxe villa (although the design is pretty gorgeous too). The devoted staff, headed up by Eddie Murphy clone and ever-smiling manager, Asmara, sustain the Hansa philosophy when the owners are away. As the villa’s spiritual advisor, Asmara is amazingly knowledgeable about Balinese culture and traditions, he was happy to divulge all over dinner and accompany us to a traditional Hindu ceremony in the local village. If you’re lucky enough to stay during a full or new moon (like we did), you also get a rare opportunity to watch Hindu priests bless the property. Staff, too, went out of their way to introduce us to daily Balinese life: teaching us how to make traditional palm leaf offerings and Indonesian delicacies in the kitchen – activities that the children really enjoyed.
And it’s refreshing to find a villa where the owners are committed to eco-friendly practices, a healthy lifestyle and giving back to the community. These surfing and yoga devotees support local organic farmers, practice recycling in the kitchens and insist on biodegrable household cleaning. We also learnt about their wonderful trust fund, the Hansa Foundation, set-up to educate local children in traditional culture, arts, music and the environment.
We thought that Villa Hansa would be ideal for groups and, as the bedrooms are on the compact side (with romantic four-poster beds), particularly suitable for groups of couples.

Highlights
It was the smallest of details – like herbal incense hand-picked to enhance the day’s vibe – that greatly contributed to our spiritually enhancing and rejuvenating stay. Loved the tasty, organic food (don’t miss Made’s health-giving smoothies at breakfast!), Hindu rituals and full-on peacefulness, from bathing under the stars in outdoor stone bathtubs to drinking in the rice-field views from the bedroom porch – armed, naturally, with a sundowner.
Surprises
There are three resident dogs here, but if requested, these can be excluded from the grounds during your stay. Some might find just one TV/DVD player and a lack of electronic devices and games a tad limiting and, compared to other villas, Hansa isn’t so kid-friendly: some essentials, like baby high chair and car seat, are not provided.

We loved our stay at the villa. This was our first time to Bali and it made quite an impression. Our family is looking forward to coming back again someday. We had our family of 5 (with 3 teenage daughters) plus my retired parents. The main living area was big and comfortable and decorated beautifully. The bedrooms were all lovely and were very roomy.
The bathrooms tended to have a few insects, but was expected since they are outdoor bathrooms.
The staff was amazing and catered to our every wish. We felt like they were family by the end of our week. We also enjoyed having masseuses come to give us poolside massages.
The pool and poolside area was gorgeous and we enjoyed it every day.

Loved our stay at Villa Hansa. The Villa is beautiful the staff amazing. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Excellent service all done with a smile. Thank You.
Villa Hansa has all the discerning comforts you’d expect of a deluxe holiday home – 18m infinity-edge pool monopolising pretty riverside gardens, stylish minimalist bathrooms, iPod and docking station, plasma-screen TV – and, as the owner’s are avid collectors of antiques, this contemporary Balinese property is littered with them, personally sourced from across the Indonesian archipelago. Rooms, including the striking, semi-open main pavilion and the four delightful guestrooms, house Javanese wood chests, rare Buddhist busts and vintage woven throws from Sumba.
Yet there’s also a wonderful informality and relaxed calm about this 2007-built property – a reflection of the owners’ personalities. It starts with their belief that staff are a key component of the Hansa experience; the team of ten locally employed staff are endearingly friendly and welcoming, each making you feel like part of an extended Balinese family. Given the owners are also surfing enthusiasts it’s no coincidence that Villa Hansa is situated near to a string of surfing beaches along this beautiful south-west coastal strip – the nearest, Pererenan Beach, is 300m away – and a collection of forty or so surfboards is available for guest use.
Spirituality and culture, though, is a core element at Villa Hansa with practically everywhere offering a ‘Zen moment': from the soothing sounds of the living area water-wall to a recurring Tibetan theme, including Tibetan prayer flags strung along the staircase and a stunning ceiling lantern in the living room. Each guestroom is named after a Hindu God and there’s a dedicated yoga room where, tellingly, you’ll find the only TV in the house. Even the full-time manager doubles as a spiritual guru!
This eco-conscious villa emphasises healthy, natural food and wherever possible the two accomplished chefs use locally sourced, fresh organic produce for their excellent array of western and Asian dishes (which include ‘naughties’ like Indian curries and Mexican tacos!) Provisioning for meals is charged on guest account, although first-day breakfast is inclusive in the rates.
If you can tear yourself away, take advantage of the seven-seater car and Made, the villa’s ‘in the know’ driver-guide. He can whisk you off to a host of fascinating destinations and, along with the rest of the lovely staff, help you have a truly memorable Bali sojourn.
Villa Hansa rests in peaceful Delod Padonan, one of several small villages within the coastal community of Pererenan in Bali's south-west district of Canggu. Miniscule Delod Padonan offers visitors an ideal opportunity to experience traditional Balinese culture and community life. Unlike most other communities in the area, there is as yet no foreign development here. Beyond the garden border and accessed by stepping stones across the narrow River Tibu, a steep bank of terraced rice fields extends. Staff can easily arrange hikes through this scenic landscape (which alternatively can be viewed at leisure from bedrooms three and four). Several naturally beautiful beaches, renowned for their surf breaks, are nearby: Pererenan Beach is just a 300m stroll or quick drive through the village, while long-time surfer’s haunt, Echo Beach, is one kilometre away – jump on one of the villa’s complimentary motorbikes to get there.
About Canggu Canggu is actually a small fishing village, but has become the collective name for a number of villages (including Berawa, Tegal Gundul, Tiyingtukul, Pererenan, Nelayan, Babakan ) which, despite lying within a developing area, can still be described as a sleepy coastal locale. Here, amongst the rice fields which extend all the way down to the beach, you will find some of the most luxurious private residences on Bali. It is also an area that most surfers will know about, with reef swells that are larger than those you will find in Kuta further south. Swimming isn't advisable however as the rips can be dangerous. Nearby sporting facilities include the Canggu Club (of which many holiday villas in the area include guest membership), offering social and leisure amenities, including a state-of-the art gym, a 25m swimming pool and a tennis and squash centre. Along the coast to the north of Canggu is the Nirwana Bali Golf Club which was designed by Greg Norman and is frequently voted the number one golf course in Asia. Next to this is Pura Tanah Lot; a sea temple perched high on a craggy wave-lashed rock and probably the most photographed sight in Bali. Sophisticated Seminyak, a few kilometres south of Canggu, lays claim to the highest concentration of independent fine-dining restaurants on the island, including Sarong, La Lucciola and Ku Dé Ta, together with a wide choice of chic cocktail bars, exciting nightclubs, lavish spas and elegant boutiques.
About Bali Bali is Indonesia's most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer. The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life's more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill. Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours' flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia's capital. The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.
Built in contemporary Balinese style with traditional Indonesian touches, Villa Hansa rests in 1,200sqm of riverside grounds. The stage-setting entrance features a pond filled with lotus blooms, enclosed by a moss-consumed wall. Across the stepping stones, you arrive in the open-plan main pavilion, traditionally designed with fine Borneo wood floors and ironwood roof.
To the right, the living area comprises a square formation of two white leather sofas, contrasting with antique wood chairs and table, framed with Indonesian objets, stone statues and vases of exotic blooms. From the lofty ceiling hangs a spectacular lantern comprising Tibetan characters encased in numerous shell pieces. Respecting the spiritual ambiance, an iPod and dock are the only electronic diversions here. The central dining area is dominated by an expansive table seating ten and crafted from one block of teak while to the left is a generous and well-equipped modern kitchen with adjoining staff quarters and guest washroom.
Entirely open-sided (protected by bamboo blinds), the main pavilion is kept cool by ceiling fans and natural breezes. Outside, a high-walled stone corridor and staircase lead to a detached yoga room, which contains the villa’s only TV (29-inch plasma screen with 380-plus channels) with a DVD/CD player and stacks of DVDs.
From the pavilion, pretty gardens scattered with stone murals and statues stretch down to the infinity-edge pool and deck. Outdoor furniture includes sunbeds and antique armchairs; opposite, the ironwood-roofed balé (gazebo) makes a secluded spot for repose.
Four ensuite bedrooms located in two garden wings flank the pool’s left side. Each varies in character and décor, but all come exquisitely decorated and feature four-poster king-size beds and stone-clad bathrooms with circular stone bathtub. In the single-storey wing nearest the main pavilion, two bedrooms boast additional outdoor garden bathrooms. Bedrooms three and four, in the double-storey wing further along, don’t have outdoor bathrooms but provide large porches facing the rice fields. A lower garden leads down to a Hindu shrine and the River Tibu, marking the property’s boundary.
